Diplomacy, Continued

What's the deal with gifts?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton opened her first extended talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov by giving him a present meant to symbolize the Obama administration’s vow to “press the reset button” on U.S.-Russia relations.

She handed a palm-sized box wrapped with a bow. Lavrov opened it and pulled out the gift: a red button on a black base with a Russian word peregruzka printed on top.

“We worked hard to get the right Russian word. Do you think we got it?” Clinton asked.

“You got it wrong,” Lavrov said.

Instead of "reset," Lavrov said the word on the box meant “overcharge.”

Clinton and Lavrov laughed.

Hm. You work at the State Department, with thousands of native Russian speakers at your easy command.

You "worked hard" to get a fairly basic word right but got it wrong.

Excellent.

Unlike the Gordon Brown dis, this is just an error without much consequence.

However, it does demonstrate that none of these fucks have any idea what the hell they're doing.

Hillary could have called a native speaker of Russian, but apparently she decided to rely on, who knows, her good buddy Joe Wilson and BabbleFish.

Yes, it's a small thing... except Hillary intended it to be a big, charming, winning gesture. Which failed. Because she "worked hard" to get a word right but didn't think of making a phone call to an expert.

If they can't take the minute necessary to get the small things right, I don't see why I should have confidence they'll spend the hours and weeks necessary to get the big things right.

Thanks to anti-Harkonen Freedom Fighter Geoff.

Actually few State officers can speak more than one foreign language and probably less than one per cent can speak Russian.  Of these less than one per cent can speak it like a native (Level five).

State discorages language training which is obvious given the pathetic qualifications of speakers.  By this means it is able to restrict the posting of officers to the select few.  For example they will not send non language qualified officers to Japan or Germany although most Germans or Japanese speak some English.  However they will send the same non language qualified officers to Mongolia, Baghdad or Pakistan because no one in their right mind wishes to be assigned there.

Just remember whenever someone trots out a State officer that these cretins have fewer qualifications than a military officer of the same age and experience in terms of education, experience and language proficiency.

"Babelfish says the Russian translation for "reset" is: âîçâðàò"..

More or less.

'Peregruzka' means any sort of 'overload' and is the word used in spaceflight to describe 'G-forces' during launch and landing -- you know, the much higher acceleration than normal earth gravity, that pulls your cheeks down over your ears, flattens your eyeballs into Mason-mint-shaped jello in your sockets, pools your blood in the back end of your cranium around the medula oblongata thingie, pops all 'outie' belly buttons into 'innies' permanently, pushes your belt buckle through your navel, and -- for half of a random population -- pulls your scrotum down between your legs until it nestles in your anus.

THIS is what Hillary was wishing on the Russian!

This idiocy happens all the time.

The Boeing 747 making the first commerical U.S. flight  to China in many years had the name "Yankee Clipper" emblazoned on the side of its fuselage.

Only what it really said was "Yankee Scissors".

Jimmy Carter went to Poland and told the Poles, in Polish, "I know you".

What he really said was "I know you carnally" --IOW as in the bible when it speaks of knowing a woman.

Then there's the time a female Russian journalist swooned over Clinton, sighing "ya tee-byá lyoo-blyóo"  --- "I love you", which Der Schlick happily took as meaning "I want to blow you".

OK, I made the last part up.

The correct Russian word should have been "perezagruzka", which means reset instead of "peregruzka", which means overcharge.

140 Russians and buttons...

There's a most likely apocryphal Carter-era story about the SALT II talks, where negotiations were being conducted in a Moscow conference room. During a break, one of the American junior negotiators was mesmerized by a red button on the table (an electronic gavel). When he presses the button, a LOUD buzzer sounded, startling everyone. The normally humorless and stonefaced Andrei Gromyko smirked, and remarked "there goes Washington". One of the other Russians began playing it up, pleading "Call Brezhinski! Call Brezhinski! For God's sake, tell him it's a mistake!".

From one of Strobe Talbott's books, if I remember correctly.

Verb- to reinstall
Return to diplomacy and reinstall relationships between two countries - would be the actual meaning of Biden's word - reset. The meaning of "reset" in combination with visual image - button- in English language might sound well, but will not convey the same meaning in Russian language, especially when using literate translation word by word. Seriously, Lili, you're missing the point. This administration is one big FAIL button with screw-up after screw-up in the area of diplomacy. Words and actions still mean something everywhere. Giving fucking movies to Brown? Giving plastic toy helicopters to the Brown children? Hillary's gaffe with this button is just one more indication of the complete lack of forersight, and protocol, in our dealings with the rest of this planet. We are being laughed at over this administration's ineptness, and by extension our ineptness as a country to elect someone that knows what the hell they are doing. We are displaying a grave lack of intelligence that will potentially lead to this great country's undoing, from outside and from within.

207 Aw, c'mon, guys.  I love Hill.  I'm still a PUMA-crat.  There's no real defense as to why she couldn't get the word right, but this is a gaffe -- not a direct insult (ala the Obamas and Brown).  Though, I must say, even I know in Russian that "pere" roughly means "over" in Russian (took it for 4 years in high school, so not enough for me to know what "peregruzka" means).

My Republican relatives still tell me -- to this day -- "you were right -- I would SO take Hillary over Obama right now."  Just like I voted McCain/Palin instead of Democrat (which I'd done for every national office Election until 200.  There's no reason to be nasty about Hillary -- she did great in Asia, and is continuing to do well abroad.

Hill's human.  Both she and Lavrov got a laugh out of it.  She's the only one in the admin seeming to care at all about foreign policy, while Obama is more content to fiddle with our domestic policies, ushering in the new era of "Change."  ... or is it "Overcharge"? ;P

We're ALL human, yes. I'm glad that it was laughted off (at least publically). That said, there USED to be efforts made to get things right. And that is the point. There seems to be no effort whatsoever to 'sweat the small stuff'. Details matter.

Totally agreed and understand.  It makes the US look silly.  It especially flies in the face of the new "World Peacemaker" meme the Dems think they own.  To wit: "WE understand other cultures, and WE understand others!  We're not ignorant and insular -- we are the cultured party!"

Hill is in the Admin.  Rib her.  I just wish the attacks weren't personal.  I'm getting more conservative by the day, but I still am a "blue dog" Dem at sunset, and while Hillary messed up, she didn't try to actively snub the Russians.  Her SoS tours have been great so far: they're one good light in a domestic policy MESS.

I just wish the attacks weren't so personal.  That's all.  There are a lot of Dems that were pissed off at the Libs for their classism, sexism, and more over people like Hillary (and Palin), and I love my new connection with Republicans.  Slamming Hillary for being fat, a moron, or lumping her in with O does little favors.  Hill f'd up by missing a syllable in a Russian word.  Che sera sera.  But she isn't pushing through porkulus.  And she wouldn't have been were she Prez.

Silver lining.

Right on.  In the whole gift-snub of the Obamas with the Browns, all I could think of was how thoughtful and timeless the gifts were.  From PM Brown to Pres Obama in particular (the first spouses was more icing on the cake) -- the gifts were historical, timeless, unique, irreplaceable, and absolutely impeccable.

And then Obama gave Brown a copy of "Timecop" on DVD.  What a way to restore our reputation, in reinforcing America's "commercialized culture."  Change indeed.

Love America.  Respect America.  Gift something quintissentially American.  It's not hard -- after all we speak English, are based in a tradition of the British law and culutre, and share many commonalities.
