| Shocker: Obama Needs His 'Prompter![]() Security blanket. Resting on top of a tall, narrow pole, they flank his podium during speeches in the White House’s stately parlors. They stood next to him on the floor of a manufacturing plant in Indiana as he pitched his economic stimulus plan. They traveled to the Department of Transportation this week and were in the Capitol Rotunda last month when he paid tribute to Abraham Lincoln in six-minute prepared remarks. Obama’s reliance on the teleprompter is unusual – not only because he is famous for his oratory, but because no other president has used one so consistently and at so many events large and small. After the teleprompter malfunctioned a few times last summer and Obama delivered some less-than-soaring speeches, reports surfaced that he was training to wean himself off of the device while on vacation in Hawaii. But no luck.Shouldn't a president who is supposedly famous for his oratory be better at speaking extemporaneously? As the story notes, his inability to make a speech without the technology means he's constantly looking to his sides, not directly at the camera, and by extension the American people. And again, the double-standard is jarring. Obama has made some pretty ridiculous statements when he's not on prompter. Yet we don't see Slate or other members of the media creating sites to track and mock "Obama-isms." On that note, it's really too bad the late-night comics or SNL can't find anything funny about Obama. Comments1

It's amazing to me that it takes Politico saying it to make people actually acknowledge facts before their eyes, like this Teleprompter issue with Obama. Anyone with half a brain knew this for the entire election and thereafter. But now, its a "scoop" because the MSM is finally acknowledging it.
just like the Rush Strategy - anyone with a brain watching and reading the news knew that Obama kicked it off in January with his "dont listen to Obama" bullshit to the house gop while Carville/Begala pushed it relentlessly on CNN, Georgie kicking in on ABC and finally Rahm/Pfloufe/Rahm putting the exclamation point on it over the weekend and this week. But, Politco writes an article simply reciting these known facts and its a story........sad. Posted by: G at March 05, 2009 03:26 PM (5r0Tz) 4

Change the text of the Teleprompter script to read "F*ck you, America" and he'd say it without thinking about it. Granted, people would wonder if that was just a normal knee-jerk reaction by him and not a gag... Posted by: Brandon In Baton Rouge at March 05, 2009 03:28 PM (XOTI3) 11
You missed the best part of the story. Last paragraph.
Obama has relied on a teleprompter through even the shortest announcements and when repeating the same lines on his economic stimulus plan that he's been saying for months — whereas past presidents have mostly worked off of notes on the podium except during major speeches, such as the State of the Union. Come on. Really? Really? Can't remember the same pithy things you've said a hundred times? Really? Posted by: lorien1973 at March 05, 2009 03:29 PM (IhQuA) 12

So we've figured out the soaring oratory crutch: speeches and concepts wholly scribed by others and read real-time. Thanks, Obamamedia, for keeping us updated in such a timely manner.
Now, about those autobiographies? Any ideas to their provenance? Any at all? Why, it's like Obama has no executive experience at all. Maybe Brooks, Buckley et al. can weigh in here. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at March 05, 2009 03:32 PM (swuwV) 17
In spite of the meme of both the left and right, GWB delivered some of the best speeches given by Presidents, both in delivery and content. I doubt if anyone can point to a major or semi major speech that was not well delivered. From his 9/11 address to Whitehall to his various addresses to the military academies they were good.

Bolt it to his head indeed. Maybe if he wasn't so quick to hack'n'slash the DoD budget, he'd notice the new helmet-mounted cueing HUD replacement technology, and get one for himself. When the cameras are at 90 degrees to the teleprompter one can easily see Obama read the page in a single shot since his eyes have to focus to read. Very disconcerting when you first see it. Reagan and Bush gave better speeches, delivered with more sincerity They had better themes too: Normandy heroes, morning in America, For us or against us, Angels in the whirlwind. Obama sounds good only to liberals since he only talks about how the world owes them everything and he is going to provide it. He has never delivered one line memorable to all Americans. And I doubt he could write one either. What a waste this guy is.

All the prompters I've run are off of a Windows system, and can be stand alone or networked. The simplest thing would be to somehow get Windows to crash within a few minutes of a speech. He is NOT an orator. I hate to give Bill Clinton credit for anything, but the ability to walk up to a microphone and give a speech with no prompt at all, and have the room in the palm of his hand, that is something that son of a bitch could do. It didn't seem that special then, but in contrast to both W and 0, wow does it stand out now. Posted by: arminius at March 05, 2009 08:21 PM (ZVmZd) 85
Obama NEEDS those teleprompters, man.
Otherwise he mighaccidentally make eye contact with a real person... Posted by: richard mcenroe at March 05, 2009 08:36 PM (zITw9) 86
"I heard a rumor from someone in DC recently that the White House tech people are trying to get some kind of computer-type thingy installed in the top of the podium so he won't have to be so obvious using the Teleprompter. Same person told me that he had to keep the Blackberry because that's how Axelrod feeds him his talking points before - and during - every meeting he has. And that's why Axelrod is in the White House. "
Remind me again why it's insensitive to post pictures of Obama lawn jockeys...? Posted by: richard mcenroe at March 05, 2009 08:39 PM (zITw9) Posted by: Jon Favreau at March 05, 2009 08:58 PM (hKtiw) 88

What are you talking about? My moonbat brother insists that the Philly "Throw Gramma under the Bus Clarification Speech" was on par with the Gettysburg Address. Of course, the first 12 times I asked what the most memorable line was, he stammered and told me that it was a great speech regardless of whether or not he could remember it. Now at least he went and read the transcript a few times and has a stock answer for me. And for the life of me, I can't remember what it is.

Hillary didn't lose to him. The rules and bylaws committee of the DNC made sure Obama would get the delegates he needed to win. It's called rigging the outcome. So, how'd that work out for you Howard Dean? Howard??? Howard?? Anyone seen Howard??? Anyone?

Reading a pre-written speech does not make someone a great speaker. Also the press seems to go out of its way to avoid images with the Teleprompter present, even though it is there at virtually every speaking engagement. I'm afraid this is the first chink to be shown by the non-mainstream press in Obama's armor. Sadly I feel, more will be discovered in short time. Posted by: Jim at March 06, 2009 08:51 AM (Gp77Q) 95
