Beware Romulans Klingons Bearing Gifts!

If you are a sophisticated connoisseur of the motion pictures arts, you will have no idea where the above, slightly altered quote comes from.

If, however, you are a lowbrow Mongoloid conservative* like myself, you will be instantly aware that in "Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan" that sage advice is given to Admiral James Kirk by Doctor Leonard McCoy.

Why do I bring up a passage from a 27 year old movie?

Because it's the first thing I thought of when I read this account of the classless way in which our current First Lady/Bird of Prey Weapons Officer treated her English counterpart.

Like all good guests, Sarah Brown arrived bearing gifts for the children, Malia and Sasha. And they were really nice presents. A bit of thought had clearly gone into choosing them: Top Shop dresses (with matching necklaces) and a selection of books by British authors. Lovely.

Mrs Brown may have two boys but she certainly knows the way to a little girl’s heart. These were gifts chosen in the true spirit of present-giving: to please the recipient, not the giver.

In return Mrs Obama gave the Brown children, Fraser and John, two toy models of Marine One, the Presidential helicopter. Fair enough on the helicopter part, always a popular choice with small boys; but Marine One? It’s not as though anyone needs reminding that Barack Obama is President or that he has his own helicopter. Short of giving the boys Action Man models of her own husband smiting the evil forces of neoconservatism, Mrs Obama’s gesture could not have been more solipsistic or more inherently dismissive of Mrs Brown.

Yes, nothing builds on diplomatic friendships like giving out narcissistic, self-aggrandizing gifts. What's the matter, ME-chelle, all out of autographed photos of the ME-ssiah?

Or maybe you are just following Blago's advice. After all, a presidential gift is a f'n valuable thing! You just don't give something like that away for nothing, do ya?

In any event, I suppose the Brown's children got off lucky. I have it on good authority that ME-chelle's original idea was to present them with the smoking entrails of several slain Ferengei who had dared question the wisdom of raising taxes during a recession.

*Used in the Dreherian sense.

UPDATE: The White House Gift Shop sells a "Marine One Playset" for $15.

A Marine One Playset? $15

Two Marine One playsets? $30

Humiliating your closest ally? Priceless.

2 I don't think it's that bad. This is nitpicking. Mrs. Brown gave the girls British books, and she gave the boys American helicopter models. Who cares?

3 I think this is stretching for things to complain about.   Assuming, of course, that these are really incredible one-of-a-kind models of Marine One where all the doors open and the rotors work and everything and it's all big enough for the GI Joe dolls to fit.

I mean, really... weeee... I get a dress as a present.   Kids just LLLOOOOVEE getting clothing as presents don't they.

5 At least Michelle gave them something.

With the horrible faux pas Obama has been committing (sending back the bust of Churchill; not scheduling the customary press events; not having any "couple time" with Brown), I'm surprised they even knew to do this.

(Or - maybe they didn't, and this was what they could dig up at the last minute!)

I think that when Obama wanted to move into Blair House several weeks prematurely (and all his supporters screamed about how it was  horrible of Bush not to let them), that was probably our cue that he would be gauche in all forms of etiquette and diplomacy.

9 The helicopters even had doorway dents from Barry's head.

It is a minor snub, but a snub is a snub. Worf really wanted to give the kids copies of Barry's book, but the Ghost of Kahles intervened.

10 The Brits may hate Gordon Brown, but they are livid (and quite rightly, too) over the way that President Teleprompter handled the entire Brown visit. No red carpet, no joint presser in the East Room, no mention of our greatest alliance since WWII, no first ladies presser, Obama makes fun of Brown to his face--and no this.  When the BDS-infested British media thinks that Bush was a better sport at handling their questions than Bambi....

Posted by: '80sBaby at March 05, 2009 12:40 AM (zmiSr)

11 It's chintzy and tacky, and in the wake of all the other things the Obama's did to alienate the UK this week, it deserves to be criticized.

The writer of the article was correct. Michelle probably sent somebody to the White House gift shop 5 minutes before Mrs. brown showed up.

The US/UK relationship is too important to let some self-obsessed amateurs undermine it at every turn with careless and thoughtless acts.

I wasn't gonna say nothing - really, because I don't care. Trash 'em.

But yeah... since others have pointed it out... total nothing here.

She gave 'em Marine One. All the better souvenier to remember their visit to the US White House and meeting the President.

Ain't really gonna get much play from this one. But by all means, don't let me stop you.

Seriously. Go for it.

This is my favorite part:

Whether deliberate or not, the whole thing feels like a snub.

As for Fraser and John, their parents’ trip to America will always be remembered as the time that “Mum and Dad went to see the President, and all we got was this lousy plastic helicopter”.

Posted by: Druid at March 05, 2009 12:49 AM (D11qf)

18 The visit by Brown and his family was handled poorly by Obambi and the Big Foot...the Brits are our closest ally and they went out of their snobbish way to basically tell the Brits, "FUCK YOU, HONKEYS!"

God knows what those two assholes will do when they invite Castro, Chavez, lil' Kim or the Dinnerjacket to the White House...

Posted by: Buck Naked at March 05, 2009 12:50 AM (kmEp8)

19 I will go for it.  This article was from a British paper, for one thing; and it is just one in a series of snubs to Great Britain.

I am incensed at this treatment (regardless of who is Prime Minister).

While I'm not normally one to criticize a gift, it's this along with all the rest.  If it had ONLY been the gifts, I would overlook it - and so, no doubt, would the British press.

Posted by: Alana at March 05, 2009 12:50 AM (JE2zV)

20 You know, the White House has special M&M's! The gift shop sells them in a white and blue box with the presidential seall for $1.99 a pack.

Those would make wonderful gifts! Perhaps I'll save them in case the Pope comes to town!

22 I get that boys like military toys, but Marine 1?  Even skipping the egocentric aspect of it, does it have any armament (I would presume not as the Pres isn't likely to go all We Were Soldiers on the taliban)?  What fun is a military toy without plastic (or even nerf) guns?  Are these the old accidentally declassified Marine 1s, or the new hotness?  And how exactly do you play with two Marine 1s?

I know what I would do (and you can guess if you've been watching 24).

Posted by: Methos at March 05, 2009 12:53 AM (Tpf99)

23

It doesn't sound too bad to me, although maybe and Air Force One and a Marine One would have given it a little variety. (Although the gift shop comment might be true too.)

But something that is good out of all of this is that the European and UK press are still mainly lefties who hate the U.S. no matter who is in charge. I can't recall the leftie Toronto Star ever defending Bill Clinton except during the elections themselves and over leftie issues, like abortion on demand.

So maybe the foreign MSM criticisms of the Obama Administration will make it through to the U.S. in some way, shape or form and affect the U.S. press especially if there ever is some sort of mixed press conference. I think it was HotAir, but someone had a link today about the UK press being pissed at not being able to question the One and they all put it down to them being censored because the Admin knew the Brits would ask rough questions.

25 16 The worst part was the gift tax she had to pay upon leaving the premises.

So what's the deal on that? Does she pay a tax on the gift she gave or received? Or is it both?

Mrs. Brown had to a pay a gift tax on the time she wasted in keeping Michelle from trying on designer gowns and being fabulous (as time with Michelle is a gift)...and both sets of gifts.  Leave no thing untaxed!

Damn...a little sensitive tonight everyone is. Yeah, the whole administration was pretty classless in the way they handled the whole affair (lame snow cancellation etc.). But for the British press to get into a snit about gift exchanges? You have to be fucking kidding me.

But if all we have to get worked up about is badly botched protocol, then I guess all our other problems are solved. To me it looks like the tantrum the KosKids threw when Pres. Bush gave Angela Merkel an inpromptu shoulder rub. Remember how Germany severed all treaties with the U.S. after that? Sadly, I suppose the same will happen with the U.K. after the "plastic helicopter incident." Meanwhile, Hugo Chavez just nationalized all of Cargill's Venezuelan assets.  So maybe a little perspective is due?

84 Meanwhile, Hugo Chavez just nationalized all of Cargill's Venezuelan assets. So maybe a little perspective is due?

Yes, exactly! Which is why I posted what I did in #73. What makes this interesting is that even in microcosm, the current vermin infesting the White House are prodigal as a downpour when it comes to celebrating themselves... yet can't be bothered to make the smallest gesture of generosity when it doesn't directly serve The Narrative, the politically expedient. Obastard has millions howling over some executive spending a million to redecorate an office, but spends four times more than the Evil Chimpy McHitler on a party to celebrate his Sacred Unicorn Inauguration, 160 million fucking dollars... all the while lecturing the rest of us on how we "all have to sacrifice."

Utter corn-studded shithead.

Yeah, I know some of the cost of the Coronation was remitted from private sources... and that in itself is even more damning. If Obastard really wanted to demonstrate leadership and a new direction, he could have simply demanded that the inauguration be scaled back markedly, and offered to donate the unspent private funds to charity as an example of the new tone. That was absolutely possible, given that His Hooves managed to spend $1.3 trillion roughly before he's spent two months soiling the Oval Office.

P.J. O'Rourke once isolated an aspect of the problem with our government.
"There are," he explained, "FOUR ways in which money may be spent.

"One. You spend your own money on yourself. For instance, you're buying a car. In this case, obviously, you are going to make sure that you A) Spend as little money as possible, and B) Get as good a car as possible. Right?

"Two. You spend your own money on someone else. For instance, you're
buying a wedding present. Well, as we all know, while you WILL try to spend as little money as possible, it's the "THOUGHT" that counts, so you might end up buying a piece of world-class garbage, and not lose any sleep over it.

"Three. You spend someone else's money on yourself. For instance, you're
Anna Nicole Smith, and you're spending Grandpappy Hubby's (alright, you can stop playing with your plastic tits, you're not ACTUALLY Anna Nicole Smith, I'm making a point here) millions on a fur coat. Now, let's face it, the credit limits are out the door, but, since YOU are going to be seen at the Oscars in this coat, it had better be a doozy. So quality IS an issue.

"FOUR. You spend someone else's money on someone else. For instance, you're the government, and you're building a bridge for Pink County, Wisconsin. You don't give a shit how much you spend on the bridge, since it isn't your money anyway. Besides, there's always more where that came from , and you don't give a shit if the bridge falls down after two days after the last rivet is welded, because you're never going to have to use that bridge"

Washington, D.C., March 4, 2009 — The Securities and Exchange Commission today brought enforcement actions against 14 specialist firms for unlawful proprietary trading on several regional and options exchanges. The firms agreed to settle the SEC's charges by collectively paying nearly $70 million in disgorgement and penalties.

The SEC charged the specialist firms for violating their fundamental obligation to serve public customer orders over their own proprietary interests by "trading ahead" of customer orders, or "interpositioning" the firms' proprietary accounts between customer orders.

"These firms violated the public trust by abusing the privileged position they had as specialists on the various exchanges," said James Clarkson, Acting Director of the SEC's New York Regional Office. "Today's enforcement action demonstrates that the SEC has no tolerance for unscrupulous trading practices, and will work vigorously to protect investors from improper trading conduct.""

"SEC Warns Investors and Financial Firms of Government Impersonators FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2009-39

Washington, D.C., March 2, 2009 — The Securities and Exchange Commission today is warning investors and financial services firms about con-artists who may use the names of actual SEC employees to mislead potential victims. The agency also is providing information to help potential victims protect themselves from SEC impersonators.

In some instances, investors in the U.S. and abroad have been tricked into revealing private information, giving fraudsters access to their brokerage accounts, and even sending money and other assets to imposters. In other instances, unknown individuals have attempted to impersonate SEC examiners to gather confidential information from broker-dealers and investment advisers. Imposters have contacted firms by telephone, identified themselves as members of the SEC staff, and demanded immediate access to the firm's records, sometimes claiming to be conducting an "emergency" examination.

Investors should be aware that the SEC never makes or endorses investment offers or participates in money transfers. Nor does the SEC send e-mails asking for detailed personal information, or financial information such as PIN numbers."http://tinyurl.com/ch7a7d

I do believe there is a monetary limit on gifts given or received by persons in the executive branch. I know as a contractor I can only give 'gifts' valued up to $20 to a government employee (I avoid this by never doing any of that). I also know of military officers being flat out embarrassed when they'd personally be given some gorgeous sword or something (which immediately was donated to the command) and the gift they gave in return was a paperweight or something (because of the money limits).

Could be wrong though where the President is concerned. Somebody will double check that for me.

I think the point is, Mr. and Mrs. Oprah have a history of thoughtlessly mistreating our best allies, and thoughtfully groveling before our enemies.

This latest episode is just sprinkles atop the icing atop the cake.

It's not about the gifts or the cost of the gifts - the article is from a prominent UK newspaper - widely read, and deeply offended. The Churchill bust is one, the cancelled meeting is two, the palty gifts is three. There is an INTENDED offense, and as with all diplomacy it is spelled out in small things.

On the one hand, the Brits overwhelming wanted Obama, so I'm gloating.

On the other hand, I'm wondering how many more of our allies are in for a surprise. Obama is willing to sell out the Poles and strategic air defense to appease Putin, Clinton is ramming Palestine down Israel's throat, and meanwhile our enemies are all wearing Cheshire grins.

The lefties were right about one thing - Obama has changed America's status in the world. Now even our friends hate us.

I do have one other though/question:

Read the headline, "First Lady Michele Obama shows even she has a gift for gaffe".

When are the newspaper articles, like the one above, going to stop writing about how surprised they are at the cluelessness and classlessness of the Obama administration?

159 Those toys were at 15 bucks each in the gift shop. Remember that gift shop items are always hugely overpriced. Those toys probably would go for 5 bucks each in a Walmart.

$10.35 on Amazon at the moment (with free shipping)

I'd imagine, though, that White House staff do not pay full price in the gift shop.

Something is definitely going on.  This incident alone, while pretty tacky, is not exactly an international incident.  But when you pile it on top of the Churchill bust being returned, the absolute snub of no joint presser and no private dinner, a message is being sent.

I'm sure it will become more apparent in time but there is a problem in our "special relationship".

Are you sure somebody hasn't cribbed the synopsis from some wacky seventies 'fish out of water' sitcom and neglected to add the hilarity ensues tag line?

Tonight's very special episode of That's My Klingon! sees Worfelle scramble to find some boy-appropriate gifts for a guest's wife when the wife shows up with some thougtful gifts for Worfelle's two daughters. Hilarity ensues when she must beat a protocol officer to get him to sneak out from behind the drapes to scrape the gift shop price tag off of the toys before their special guests notice.

You're all missing a big one here.

Just recently, there was serious consideration of replacing the Marine One helicopter fleet. There were two leading contenders for the contract. One was British.

Obama made a big joke out of not needing a new helicopter. So the Brits won't get a shot at that business. And the toys are a way to rub that in.

See the nuance involved? This isn't a moment of thoughtlessness. It's a shot across the bows in a trade war. A god-damned international incident.

"Yes, I do carry around my ballsack like my son carries his Nintendo DS:  lovingly with both hands lest I drop it , as I am playing with it constantly."

FTFY.

And I agree that this was quite possibly one of those things where there is some sort of price-cap on gifts given.  The funny thing with that is, however, that if I recall correctly, there is also a cap on the value of gifts received.  Priceless heirlooms given to a President aren't really given to that particular President, but to The Office, and commonly wind up as part of a national collection.  I remember once, while I was on a program dealing direcly with product-sales directly to a foreign government's military, they wanted to give a bunch of employees commemorative watches to note a milestone event.  We could not accept them, and had to explain to them, politely, that the gift was literally too expensive for our government to allow us to accept.  Kinda awkward.

If not this scenario, then I will move my agreement to the faux pas falling on Michelle's self-assumed authority in handling the matter, rather than letting a knowledgable staffer take care of it for her.

Staffer - Ma'am, when you meet with the Prime Minister's wife next week, an exchange of gifts for each of your children is customary.
M'cel - OK.  Thanks.  Who are her kids?
Staffer - Two boys, ma'am.  If you like, I can arran--
M'cel - Give me a break.  C'mon.  Let's be clear, here.  I will take care of the gifts.  Two boys?  I think I can handle buying presents for two kids...sheesh!
Staffer - Very well.

This is one reason why the press should never have (racistly) built up the Obamas so.

When they do things like this, or when they finally go down for good, it makes it just that much more humiliating for them.

There's a saying that "it's the thought that counts".  I've gotten plenty of bad gifts over the years, and given more.  But they were all honest efforts.

Mrs. Brown put thought into what to bring the Obama children as gifts.  Mrs. Obama just ran down to the White House gift shop (or more likely, told someone else to do it for her) and grabbed the first thing she saw that a boy might like.

If it truly is the thought that counts, Mrs. Obama's gifts count for nothing because there was no thought behind them.

Posted by: malclave at March 05, 2009 03:10 PM (W1Ndc)

I totally agree, malclave.  I'm an overgifter, and an extremely careful buyer.  I never, ever, even for someone I really don't like, give a thoughtless gift. It might be something for 19.99, but it's guaranteed to be something that either they mentioned they would like or something I truly, genuinely, thought they would want.

I refuse to lower myself to a thoughtless person's level, and I don't do the 'they didn't give me a gift last year so I'm not getting them one this year' thing. I buy for who I want to, and I make sure it's something nice and thoughtful.

228 Players are always fighting in Runescape. It’s one of the reasons the game is so popular, being able to go to another world, attack monsters, and take their treasure . It’s adventure. It’s excitement. It’s fun. Especially through outstanding account.
And one of the best parts about combat (melee combat) is that it is by far the cheapest of all three combat methods.Ranging costs buy runescape gold because it requires the use of arrows. Magic costs even more because it requires lots and lots of runes. But melee combat is relatively cheap. The only and runescape money for sale you must spend is on your weapons and armor. Once you buy those things, you don’t have to keep buying more and more stuff to keep fighting. As you gain levels in Runescape, you will be able to buy better and better equipment. The better you get, the better the weapons and armor you can use, which makes you better able to keep your buy runescape accounts leveling-up.
And while we are getting the basics out of the way, let’s take a second to learn about the world of Runescape. Or rather, the worlds.
