Larry Kudlow May Challenge Dodd for Senate Seat

He's "confirmed his interest" in a Senate bid.

And he'd be running on Dodd's corruption:

Dodd “has yet to divulge fully his sweetheart mortgage deals with the former Countrywide,” Kudlow said in a Feb. 13 screed. “He’s re-fi’ed his mortgages, but we don’t know those documents, either. Instead of being impeached, he’s still around.”

Let me just say how terribly unfair it is that Kudlow is using the prominent post of a CNBC show to run down his possible political opponent. It's just terrible. Waah waah waah.

One of the GOP's biggest weaknesses is candidate recruitment. Many Dems, even in purplish congressional districts, or even in iffy Senate seats, ran unopposed by any serious Republican candidate.

Hopefully Barack Obama is bringing hope and change to possible challengers.

Chris "Irish Cottage" Dodd, "Man of the People:" Right.

This may be interesting, but I'm worried about Mr. Kudlow "growing in office" if he's elected.  Wasn't he one of the "prominent conservatives" that met with Messiah back in January?

If so, he may sell out his free-market creds.  If that happens, why should we bother replacing Dodd?  That's the only worry I can come up with now about his possible Senate run.

5 Someone is going to take Dodd's seat.  It might as well be Kudlow.

But doesn't he have some whores and cocaine skeletons in his closet?  Maybe that doesn't matter any more.

I hope he paid his taxes.

7 Obviously I'm against Kudlow. He's not perfect you know.

Really dodged a bullet by not electing McCain, didn't we?

Posted by: anti-McCainiac at March 04, 2009 11:36 AM (Q5asM)

8 Dodd still have a D after his name?

Then the voters up there will robotically re-elect him.

9 Wouldn't this make him like Obama, in that he'd be "stepping down" into the office?

10 Run Larry run.
CT has a Repub governor, even if she is a RINO. So he has a shot.

Posted by: the real joe at March 04, 2009 11:40 AM (2t2zK)

11 Tinian - the headline could bring some focus on the ex Clintonite cabal that is running both the White House and the media narrative:

Carville (has been running around screaming to anyone who would listen that Rush is the head of the GOP and Rush hates everyone but white men for the last month, making sure CNN pushes the narrative hard)

Begala (same, with the addition of hateful personal attacks on Rush, also pushing CNN coverage)

Georgie S. (On ABC, Busy publishing false accounts of his own show re Cantor's appearance to push the Rush v. GOP pols schism story to the hilt, making sure the weekly "panel" on This Week has pushed the Rush narrative as hard as possible)

and of course,

Rahm E (Unprompted, pushed a two minute rant about Limbaugh on a Sunday show, pushing all internal White house PR people like Gibbs to push the Rush narrative)

What do these douchebags have to do with each other? All Clinton 1992 vets, and EVERY MORNING CONFERENCE CALLS TO DEVELOP STRATEGY.

Where did this anti-Rush plan come from again? ABC? CNN? The truly sad thing is that the GOP doesnt have a spokesperson who can credibly throw down the gauntlet and expose this government-media axis ..... so the axis continues on, undaunted, to control the news cycle and overall narrative.

Sad but true.

Jim Cramer has his own problems, like how to reconcile his support of Messiah during the election with the fact that all of Messiah's current plans will only serve to damage the economy.

18 Having quality challengers step up this early is a good sign.  All it takes is one brave soldier to step up and many more will find the courage.

Posted by: Jean at March 04, 2009 11:52 AM (L64A6)

19 Larry Kudlow is a staff writer for National Review on top of his CNBC duties.  I don't think we have to worry about him not being "conservative enough" economically.  Honestly, I don't think he would have a chance in CT - he's too conservative.  But you never know.

And it's CT, for chrissakes.  I'd take an Arlen Specter-type RINO in CT if we could get it.  It isn't exactly friendly ground for movement conservatives.

20 Kudlow had cocktails with Obama he probably is a communist. Fellow travelers and all.

Posted by: Long Island at March 04, 2009 11:53 AM (/QzyE)

21 Pros: Kudlow has name rec (sorta); Kudlow has money and the network to raise a bunch more. Kudlow is incredibly well-equipped to make the argument for free market economics and to demonstrate Dodd's socialist and Countrywide/Fannie&Freddie perfidy.

Cons: Kudlow is on the record as once having been a coke addict. Kudlow is kind of obnoxious. Kudlow is the living caricature of the reckless bull market mindset that CW says wrecked the economy. Kudlow's willingness to glad-hand and baby-kiss is a big question mark (it matters).

Overall: Run, Larry, Run (but put together a damned good campaign team)

23 Please, you guys have to stop being this cynical and rejectivist.

Kudlow is one of the most true-blue capitalists on the planet.

Ah, well that's good to know. Our president "did some blow," though.

It's a genuine question whether any non-politician can go into glad-handing mode, of course. It's a humiliating sort of thing, and unless you've had years of experience debasing yourself by faking immediate friendships and sucking up to everyone, I don't know that many people can pick up the ability quickly.

Not to bash Fred Thompson -- seriously, not to bash him -- but I think he had that kind of reluctance to play this dumb game, and it hurt him, at least somewhat.

24 on the cons about kudlow:  1st:  beating a habit is exemplary--whether it be alcohol, tobacco or drugs.  2d:  bull market fanaticism is also known as positive thinking.

Posted by: kelley in virginia at March 04, 2009 12:02 PM (g568/)

25 and about the glad-handing day-to-day politics of running for office:  any aversion to that can be overcome easily  in one day.

Posted by: kelley in virginia at March 04, 2009 12:04 PM (g568/)

26 I don't think it can be overcome that easily at all.

Posted by: ace at March 04, 2009 12:06 PM (gEsIJ)

27 It helps he is a media personality, not an actor, but himself.  He is going to have switch from a transmitter to a listener and spend a lot of time on the ground in Conn.

Posted by: Jean at March 04, 2009 12:09 PM (L64A6)

28 ace,  I had to overcome it when my father ran for office.  and then i had to become an insurance salesman later in life.  hey, if i can debase myself that way, anyone can.

Posted by: kelley in virginia at March 04, 2009 12:11 PM (g568/)

29

In addition to the gladhanding thing, there may be an overall personality issue as well in that on TV he is very direct and blunt. I personally love that attitude as well as his dry sarcasm but I don't know how well that comes across to voters. I guess it could be TV shtick but I kind of doubt it.

Kudlow kicks ass and I would vote for him if I lived there.

Posted by: Ghost of Lee Atwater at March 04, 2009 12:12 PM (sXLx/)

Hell yeah! Now if I can just figure out how to sneak across the line from MA to vote for him.

Anybody got ACORN's website number?

Posted by: Andy at March 04, 2009 12:13 PM (WsTw8)

31 Succeeding at the retail piece of politics takes the same talent needed to succeed at acting: the ability to convincingly fake sincerity. No one's saying Kudlow has to become Bill Clinton, but -- to win -- he'll have to convince regular middle-of-the-road people to be comfortable with him.

Yeah, I don't think the coke thing is a deal-breaker (Dodd himself had pretty wild bachelor days while a US Senator). It'll come up though as a part of a more general character assault.

Posted by: Robert_Paulson at March 04, 2009 12:16 PM (zjgCD)

32

I would not say that being a “staff writer” for NR is the endorsement it used to be.

Znyway, I have a feeling by the time 2010 rolls around there is going to be a lot of "buyer's remorse" even in MA.

My take:  Get down in the gutter.  Sling mud early.  Sling mud often.  Obama's campaign was a completely negative campaign from its inception.  "Change" and "Hope" are significant omission ideals declaring through implication that the status quo was statically hopeless.

Ever wonder what it means to have soul?

Do we have enough confidence in our free-market beliefs to know that we are not going to be living large in time for the mid-terms?  Does Kudlow?  If so, he should openly go for Dodd's throat over his Countrywide kickbacks.

By the end of this calendar year, there should be a sizable chunk of idiots suffering from buyer's remorse.  There will be many very angry people.  We need to harness this anger and create a channel for a throw-the-bums-out groundswell.  If leaders rise on the right, then great.  If not, then scorched earth suits me just fine.

Teleprompter Jesus does not have Blowjob's political acumen.  Obama is a one-trick pony who rode his fast-seduction, NLP, jedi-mindtrick bullshit into the White House.  Once the spell breaks, it cannot be unbroken.

Posted by: MikeO at March 04, 2009 12:17 PM (4sSHg)

35 How in the world will t he coke thing be a problem?  The current occupant of the White House freely admitted to coke use and that didn't stop people from voting for him!

Posted by: wiserbud at March 04, 2009 12:22 PM (IHbof)

36 oh, wait a minute........  Kudlow would run as a Republican?

Oh, the coke thing will kill him then.

37 Whatever happened to the vast right wing conspiracy?

On a separate note, does anyone know if the conspiracy has a clearinghouse for specific skill sets because I'm tired of commenting on blogs and stewing in anger and have certain non-ninja (or Jack Bauer) skills that I'm increasingly interested in using for the cause instead of mere private sector filthy lucre.

Posted by: Anti-elitist elitist at March 04, 2009 12:27 PM (fkgyi)

42 You've GOT to be kidding me. In Connecticut, and you guys are complaining that he's not Conservative enough?

Yes, we can complain about Specter in moderate state like PA, but if we can get someone who will vote with us even 60% of the time from CT that is a great pickup in the Senate.

Yes we need Conservatives, but people like Demint, Vitter, and Cornyn aren't going to win in the NorthEast.

I hope that Larry Kudlow runs and wins in CT because he would be a great asset to us as a party. I will absolutely support him because he is a popular right-leaning pundit.

43 Not to bash Fred Thompson -- seriously, not to bash him -- but I think he had that kind of reluctance to play this dumb game, and it hurt him, at least somewhat.

I don't think that's a bash at all, I think it's a fair evaluation.  Part of the price to be paid for running for office is the chicken dinner kiss the babies pump the hands gauntlet.  Now, I'm not saying it should be, I'm simply saying that it is.  My impression was that Thompson wanted to no part of that dog and pony show.  Good on him.  But that doesn't mean it didn't hurt him.

Posted by: alexthechick at March 04, 2009 12:56 PM (SHHaV)

44 Kudlow definitely has a shot, plus he can self-finance. Which is probably the way to go given that the RNC has no one in charge of the checkbook right now. I'd like to have a low-taxes free market guy, but he does write for National Review so he is suspect. (That really pisses me off. Way to trash the big B's legacy)

Posted by: Jean at March 04, 2009 02:14 PM (L64A6)

50 The major drawback of Kudlow is that I think he's on the wrong side on immigration enforcement.  He hasn't written about the issue much though because he's got bigger fish to fry.  But he's much better than Dodd, and probably better than Shays.

Posted by: Simon Oliver Lockwood at March 04, 2009 02:18 PM (PaV2r)

51 You guys should be more excited that, run or not, a tv person will go hammer and tong after Dodd.

Posted by: Cincinnatus at March 04, 2009 05:10 PM (xXHue)

52 Dodd is such a piece of shit that Lowell Fucking Weicker could replace him and it would be an improvement. Remember that this tool had a major role in creating the financial crisis in the first place. Kudlow would be great should he somehow manage to win, although I doubt Connectiut would toss a senior Donk with major pork-barreling ability.

On the other hand, they did give the finger to Ned Lamont.
