Troop Withdrawal Kabuki

Dems Schumer, Pelosi and Reid question Obama's plan to leave 35,000 to 50,000 troops in Iraq.

And by question, I mean preen and posture to demonstrate how serious they are.

4 Not to worry, those 35,000 to 50,000 troops aren't armed soldiers at all, but specially trained unicorn dispensers to the disenfranchised peoples of Iraq.

If they keep up appearances and help Messiah make nice with the Iranians, they can have voting privileges just like Washington DC will have soon!

Harry (Searchlight) Reid, now there's a military genius.

And Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi; makes me wonder how the Pentagon brass keeps from summarily executing these jerks.

6 Want to piss off an Obamatard?

(What kind of question is that? Of course you do!)

Ask him (or, more likely, her) this question:

"If during the Democratic primaries, Barack Obama had promised that at least 35,000 U.S. troops would still be in Iraq at the 19-month mark of his presidency, that Gitmo would still be open a year after he took office, that the Obama Justice Department would not prosecute a single Bush administration official for anything, and that Obama would keep Bush's Secretary of Defense... would he have lost to Hillary Clinton, or to Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Dennis Kuchinich, Dick Gephardt, and Mike Gravel?"

7 Isn't "Kabuki" that kind of film where the girl kneels on the floor and there are all these guys standing around, but you only see them from the waist down, and when it's over the girl looks like a Cinnabon?

Thanks, I read that but missed the "nuance". Duh, sure, in light of Obama's past playing loose with the truth, any sane person would stop and say, hmmmm.

I live in Arizona and am going to be faced with John McCain running for re-election. Right now I'm hoping someone challenges him in the primary. I've been a registered Republican for over 40 years, but I  stopped my donations after McCain punked Palin.

Sounds like the typical m.o. of Shamelot©

Another brilliant strategy from Obama. With this kabuki theater they're playing, Obama looks like a reasonable centrist AND the end result is far left-of-center. The Trio, Obama, Reid, and Pelosi, are going to run this scam on everything they do.

For instance: immigration. Reid and Pelosi are going to say we should legalize all the illegals. Then Obama will step in and say, "Wait a minute, let's enact a program to create a pathway to citizenship." End result: Amnesty for 30 million illegals and Obama looks like a reasonable leader who's not willy-nilly granting citizenship to illegals, which is exactly what he did.

Obama starts at the center-left, then Reid & Pelosi *push* him further Left for the phony compromise.

Posted by: Darling at February 26, 2009 11:53 PM (QjZO2)

17 11 His was 23 months instead of 19. Obama's staff wanted 13 months, the commanders, 23; so they compromised with 19.

Anyone else see the problem with this picture?

19 Harry "the war is lost" Reid, our primary go-to guy for guidance on military theory and tactics.  As for Nancy, she's too busy figuring ways to spend all that 'extra money' once the troops are out of Iraq.  For her, "long range planning" is tomorrows shopping spree.  God help us.

20 Okay! Your boy Masturbatin' Pete just spent five minutes reading Andrew Sullivan so you don't have to. You're welcome.

Anyway, it's not so bad over there. You see, I feed on the disillusionment of the Obamatards. It sustains me. And there is no disillusionment like that of the Obamacans or -cons or whatever, because it provides an opportunity for me to say I TOLD YOU SO, YOU POST-COITAL CLEAN-UP TOWELS! The Kathleen Parkers, Christopher Buckleys, and Andrew Sullivans of the world can eat a dick (in Andy's case, I should add "like a champ."). To put it in the words of a two-month old joke, I watched Andrew Sullivan begin to regret his support for Obama and I JIZZED IN MY PANTS.

Anyway: Sullivan. If I had to describe his blog in one word at this point, I'd go with "faggoty." But really, slurs have no place in our discourse, so I'll go with "vain."

It's vain because vanity has been the hallmark of Sullivan's blogging for at least five years, which is most of the time that he's had it. Time flies: he's been an anti-Bush drama queen for most of the time that he's been blogging. I'm a little surprised to realize that fact, simply because for the first two years or so after 9/11, when political blogging was really getting started, he was a persuasive voice on our side. Because that was my first real exposure to Sullivan, I'll probably always think of his anti-Bush about-face as a recent phenomenon that challenges his longstanding conservatism.

Anyway, back to vanity. I don't need to chronicle the well-known shifts in Sullivan's position on various issues. He's changed positions. A lot of positions. In and of itself that's fine - change your mind if you want. Where the vanity comes into play is in Sullivan's insistance that he's been principled all along, that although his positions may have changed a bit, well, they haven't really changed at all; you just didn't understand his positions initially. Or his positions are a little different now, but that's because the facts have changed and he's sticking to principle, principled dude that he is. He didn't leave the GOP; the GOP left him. Sullivan's the principled one. Y'all are a bunch of sellouts.

It's the vanity of what Jonah Goldberg calls "The Party of Andrew": Sullivan's attempt to construct an ersatz conservative philosophy around his biases, prejudices, impulses, and moods. Sullivan wrote an entirely forgettable and intellectually embarrassing book on the subject. He rummaged through the intellectual history of conservative and found a guy no one ever heard of (who the hell is Oakeshott?) who disagreed with him less than anyone else, and exalted him as the polestar of True Conservatism. The reasoning is simple: Oakeshott was a serious conservative thinker, Oakeshott agrees with Sullivan on everything, ergo Sullivan is the One True Conservative. Again, y'all are a bunch of sellouts.

The vanity project continues apace. Obama's bailout and budgetary insanity is testing Sullivan's patience, but he's treading very lightly, Don't think that he'll defend Obama at every turn; he won't. Sullivan does have some conservative impulses left in him, and they're chafing at Obama's obvious liberalism. What Sullivan will not do is admit that he willingly refused to see how liberal Obama was, or that Sullivan jettisoned his conservatism and glommed on to Obama because he hated Bush oh-so-much. The defense that's starting to emerge is not "jeez, I was a doofus for supporting this jug-eared liberal douchebag out of BDS." It was "Obama promised me that he wasn't a liberal, and I had every rational reason to believe him." Sullivan is voicing genuine suprise that Obama is turning out to be liberal. Sullivan isn't saying "My bad, I was a real skidmark for supporting Chocolate Jesus." He's saying "my goodness, Obama is much more liberal than I ever possibly could have known." We all know that Sullivan abandoned conservatism, but he insists that he didn't. Obama, you see, like John Kerry, was the True Conservative in the last election. The fact that he's turning out to be a Pelosi Liberal, well, that just means that he changed. It doesn't mean that he never was a True Conservative.

Remember: Sullivan may be wrong, but he's never unprincipled. The vain can own up to obvious errors but they'll never admit to fundamental character failings. Sullivan supported Obama because, in his mind, Obama was the true conservative. Sullivan can't admit that he supported a liberal because he himself is a liberal. That would make Sullivan unprincipled! He would no longer be the One True Conservative! No, whomever Sullivan supports must be the True Conservative. If that person later turns out to be liberal, well, maybe Sullivan misjudged him. But the important thing is that Sullivan thought he was a conservative. That means he sticks to his principle of always supporting conservatives.

Before Sullivan decides that someone is too liberal for him to continue supporting, he makes a last-ditch effort to show that he's still a conservative. In fact, Sullivan was still calling Obama an Oakeshottian conservative a few days ago! Obama has been yanking the economy's levers around for the past few weeks: stimulus here, bailout there, tax hike here, tax cut there. The policies aren't consistent; many will work against each other. But apparently it's a hallmark of Oakeshottian conservatism to try a whole bunch of shit and see what heppens, regardless of what the theories say will happen.

OF COURSE doing a whole bunch of contradictory shit is Oakeshottian conservatism. Obama did it, Sullivan loves Obama, Sullivan loves Oakeshott, therefore Obama is an Oakeshottian conservative! Sullivan is principled, goddammit!

Reducing to 35,000-50,000 in 19 months would be great.

The Iraqis are stepping up more and more, time for us to leave, we can't afford it.

US base structure will probably be two FOBs in the Green Zone, plus some of the present Camp Victory/Baghdad Airport base complex, something around Ramadi and Fallujah, Talil AFB in the south, and then a few other FOBs around the country - Mosul, Anaconda in Balad, FOB Kalsu, etc.
