While I applaud Hitch's standing orders about defacing any swastika on sight, he completely forgets that you sometimes need to back that up with fists, knives, guns, etc especially when you're in their hood. Like Totten said, they could have been 'disappeared' but luckily they didn't end up that way. Hitch should be prepared to have his ass kicked every time he wants to make his presence known if he can't or won't hit cockholsters like these.

Some of you forget that deep down that Hitch could be best described as a lite version of a Jackson Democrat (Scoop or Andy, it don't matter). He feels that evil needs to be confronted, each in his own way. He does it by using the word and the pen (literally in this case); he leaves the heavy lifting (fists, knives, firearms, RPGs, SAMs, air strikes, thermonuclear AGMs) to others.

I'm not sure if it would have done him some good to actually have his ass kicked. Don't know if he would have decided to set his response meter up or down a notch. Oh well, that's for another day (if he ever gets in that position again).

16 Wow, that was an intense story. Totten is The Man of foreign journalism. All the reporters for all the news agencies should swan dive off the tops of their buildings in despair at being out-resourced, and out-written by him.

Good for Hitch to make a stand! However, like Totten sagely observes (and he should know) always make sure you have an exit or engagement strategy in hand before taking said stand. Or else it could become your Last Stand. Hitchens has been in the land of reasonably acting peole too long. He went among the unreasonable and got his ass kicked for daring to disagree with their lack of reason.

I've been in this same area on several occasions. If you don't incite anything, you would never know such a possibility exists. The Lebanese (Christian, Sunni, Druze - I don't know any Shia) are lovely people. Their hospitality cannot be exceeded by anyone.

Unfortunately, Lebanon is a ball to be kicked back and forth by outside interests. I suppose it was inevitable based on the confessional nature of the government. It guarantees divisions whether large or small.

Hitchens was probably lucky. Some of these guys have guns. I have friends who still have their AK's from the last civil war. Unfortunately, it could happen again.

All parties were satisfied. Hitchens got a red badge to add to his notoriety at comparatively little cost; Totten got something to write about; the repellent autocracy that the Lebanese have allowed themselves to be cowed into won't be immediately replaced by some new, challenging concept they're not interested in, like "democracy," that would likely fail in a country of cowards. The Syrian ass-kickers got to kick ass, the lookout got props from the ass-kickers for snaring them some material, and we all got to wax militant on how the Syrian ass-kickers need to get their asses kicked.

The ignorance in that statement defys logic - this is what happens when chattering idiots go to a foreign country. Look, Hitchens defaced the sign - not only that - but he wrote an obscenity on it. Hitches knew, or should have known, that was a provocative act and that he was signing check his body might have to cash.

He also had to have known the gesture, though dashing, was utterly useless in the environment he was in. He also should have known that most all Syrians wouldn't have helped his ass even if they hated the Nazis, even if they weren't afraid of Nazi retribution, because most of them also hate Westerners. When I was a Command Master Chief in the Navy - everytime a Sailor got involved in an "incident" like this overseas there was element that was ALWAYS involved ... ALCOHOL.

And I gotta believe it was involved here too - this is just too stupid of an incident - even for a pompous idiot like Hitchens.
