Robert K. Byrd, eminent scholar on the evils of miscegenation, raps Obama for a power-grab.

Snark aside, the old coot does have a point...

Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), the longest serving Democratic senator, is criticizing President Obama’s appointment of White House “czars” to oversee federal policy, saying these executive positions amount to a power grab by the executive branch.
In a letter to Obama on Wednesday, Byrd complained about Obama’s decision to create White House offices on health reform, urban affairs policy, and energy and climate change. Byrd said such positions “can threaten the Constitutional system of checks and balances. At the worst, White House staff have taken direction and control of programmatic areas that are the statutory responsibility of Senate-confirmed officials.”

...but not much of one. The real sin is that huge parts of our country's economy are being nationalized; Byrd is merely quibbling about which part of the federal government gets to control historically private activity.

17 This is serious shit, folks. I've been hollering about it for weeks. I'm glad to see a Democrat pointing this out. Not only is Rahm Emanuel the actual President, but he has assembled a virtual Cabinet in the White House. Most of these jobs have been filled with people who would have had trouble being confirmed, like Carol Browner and Larry Summers. They have no obligation to report to the Congress for anything. And they are also mostly white - so Obama can name a Cabinet "that looks like America" but has no influence, while the actual policymakers look like Mayor Daley's office in Chicago.

The Constitution specifically gives the President authority to appoint people to make policy, but it just as specifically requires those people to be confirmed by the Senate. What Obama is doing dwarfs what liberals accused Dick Cheney of doing - especially since Dick Cheney at least was actually elected by the people.

The Church doesn't have the power to physically destroy heretics like they used to, but they can still excommunicate. They ought to start. It's a disgrace that you've got "Catholics" like Biden and Pelosi not only advocating abortion, but actually acting on it by promoting legislation that encourages it.

I've been pro-Catholic for years, but haven't been able to make the intellectual leap yet. I just can't seem to get past my agnosticism. I did notice that, starting a few years ago, I no longer criticized the Church. Now, when I see someone start up with the Catholic bashing, I want to jump in and start swinging. It's a strange feeling, not being a Catholic and all!

If only the parishioner recruiters lower in the hierarchy would follow his lead and, as you state, excommunicate the heretics, then maybe people could take their religion more seriously. This isn't a bash against the Catholics but a general critique of religion where belief is trending á la carte. I'm afraid the hypocrisy undermines the message.

I really thought that we would see a great deal of inexperience and naivety from the President, at least in these early months. While I can characterize what he has been doing in this manner, I cannot criticize how he has been doing it. Do not make the mistake of judging this man by the stupidity of is choices. Judge him by how he projects and consolidates power. Many of the policies are magician’s patter to distract us from what he is accomplishing behind the scenes. I can only warn that many of his actions show that he understands how to grab and consolidate power. He is using the times to his advantage and yelling fire in the movie house to obtain his goals quickly. Republicans are looking like idiots for cheering themselves for not stopping the stimulus package. The budget is looking to be a repeat for Obama. Judge him by the results. He is getting all that he wants. We have won on nothing. At present, we do not have the strategy to compete against this onslaught.

Holder visited the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on Monday and spoke to reporters about his trip during a news conference Wednesday.

Closing Guantanamo, he said, "will not be an easy process. It's one we will do in a way that ensures that people are treated fairly and that the American people are kept safe."

President Barack Obama selected Holder to lead the new administration's effort to close the detention facility within a year.

Much of the year will be spent reviewing the individual case histories of the roughly 245 inmates, the attorney general said.

"It's going to take us a good portion of that time to look at all of the files that we have to examine, until we get our hands around what Guantanamo is, and also what Guantanamo was," he said.
