Obama's Speech

Sounds like fun.

Aides say the speech, which will have a heavy focus on the economy, will try and strike an optimistic tone. That's a sign Obama has heard the criticism, including from former President Bill Clinton, that he needs to mix sober talk with an upbeat bottom line.

"He believes we will meet these challenges and lift ourselves out of this," one top aide said of the recession. "He will say, 'The best days are ahead of us.'"

The aides said foreign policy will be touched on lightly in the speech so that the president can focus largely on the economy and related issues, including health care, education, and energy.

Aides stressed the speech will be "thematic" and thus will not get into much detail on the president's plans to deal with the credit crunch and housing crisis.

Hm. A non-detailed speech that will "try" to strike an optimistic tone?

Haven't they tried that before?

I'm glad he will attempt optimism in this speech, but I have my doubts as to whether it will work because I do not believe Barack Obama is an optimistic man at heart. Sure, he sometimes mouths optimistic platitudes, but his entire campaign was based on the assumption that something was wrong with America and only his election would heal the country. That's not optimism, it's conceit.

Since winning the presidency, Obama has flailed a bit because it's hard to run a country on the vision of not being George W. Bush. As we've seen from the market, part of the skittishness of investors is because of the doom and gloom talk on the part of this administration. We'll see if the president can change that tonight, or whether he'll just keep trying to blame the previous administration for the economy's ills.

Update - Volfan, in the comments, brings up a good point. The non-optimistic talk isn't the only thing wrong with Obama's 'cures' for the economy. It's this:

The joint address to Congress, similar to a State of the Union speech, which presidents traditionally give in subsequent years of their administration, is also Obama's first chance for a formal roll out of nuts-and-bolts policy.

He is set to address healthcare, climate change, energy and education, as he argues that the size of the crisis means his key agenda items are more, not less important than they would have been in sunny economic times.

Obama has already driven a 787-billion-dollar stimulus plan through Congress, unveiled a 275-billion-dollar foreclosure plan and tried, so far unsuccessfully, to steady the banking industry.

We have a serious economic crisis and he's being opportunistic. Is that what passes for leadership these days?

1 I cannot imagine him starting off any other way than:

"I inherited..............."
"This economic mess was dumped............."
"Because of a refusal of bipartisan support.............."
"The previous administration failed to....................."
"I won, therefore........................"

5 He can try to be as optimistic as he wants but the fact is that what is killing the market (and confidence) isn't his optimism (or lack thereof) but rather his cures.  You can't spend your way to prosperity and higher taxes won't spur economic activity.  Unless he's going to about face on those two things, lifetime supplies of skittles and unicorns simply won't do.

6 For him to step up and do the right thing, IMHO, he would need to grow as a person/man, and I see no incentive for him to even attempt that sort of advancement in his philosophies. He hides his true anti-American nature as best he can, but all the lying in the world will not keep it under wraps.

13 Like every optimist, he'll have to focus on the "positives." So I expect Obama will stress that the "fundamentals" of the US economy are "sound."

Although, he'll risk sounding just like Dick Cheney on the topic, which is one comparison I think his speech-writers will split hairs and bend metaphors in order to avoid.

It'll be the same message, but a different "message," a la Axelrod sorta thing.

So far I've managed to miss every single one of his speechifying moments and only caught the highlights transcribed on my favorite blogs. I will avoid this one as well.

He'll say the same empty rhetoric, the loony left will gush about how "Presidential" and "Elegant" and "Thoughtful" he is and how he's really going to fix everything for us. A poll will immediately come out countering the 3 in 4 Americans are scared poll, his approval rating will shoot up, and two days from now when the gas wears off everyone will struggle to remember key elements from his speech and have no luck figuring out if he actually committed to anything (hint, he probably didn't if he could help it).

It is wrong of me, but I do pray that the stock market does not go up the rest of the week because I don't want the inevitable "stock market rises on comforting words of Obama" headlines.

18 I think Garand Fan @ #1 has the right of it. Maybe I'm misremembering, but did Bush piss and moan this much about the previous administration? I do recall that there was a lot of finger pointing after 9/11, but that seemed to be more of reaction to the left trying to pin it on Bush. I also seem to remember that the push back did not seem to come from the White House. If I am getting it wrong, could someone point it out to me, I like to think that I'm a fair man.

22 The only thing he could say that would give me (or the markets)  any comfort would be, "I never realized how hard this job is, so I hereby resign as president and call on the democratic members of congress and my administration to do the same."  Since I don't see that happening, I think I'll rent a movie instead and hunker down for an even longer winter.

23 Sears, almost no president complained about the previous administration that directly after an election.  Even somebody with the class of Jimmy Carter would have found it unseemly.  After all, Obama won, as he has reminded us.  If he wants to change it, he can.

Clinton did a little of this, but not anywhere close to this extent.  Again, the media would have found it unseemly for a president to do this.

Off topic, this will be the first Obama speech in front of a crowd of any size that is not openly sycophantic.  Not that the pubbies will boo, but they'll do the usual sitting when Obama says something stupid.

That's my prediction for the Joint Bloviation to Congress:  Waffles will say he's got the best experts in the world studying how to make our coming days the bestest ever.  And he's getting more experts to advise the experts.

The reason the Dims never find their Reagan(hint: BO's not it) is because Reagan had to go through the fire for years from the Dims and his own party.

This is from AP's spin on their messiah's speech. First they let us know that everyone loves the messiah

Obama approaches this moment riding a strong, upbeat sentiment among the public. Overall, 68 percent of people approve of his job performance, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds. A New York Times/CBS News polls finds that more than three-quarters of those surveyed were optimistic about the next four years with Obama in charge, and similar majorities said they were confident in his ability to make the right decisions about the economy.

Blame game Barry will in full force tonight.

Obama will make clear that the trillion-dollar-plus deficit is one he "inherited." In other words, he wants to remind people that President George W. Bush and the previous Congress left him a big hole, forcing him to pursue the costly stimulus package.

There is sure to be ceremony as Obama arrives in the well of the House. His speech is tentatively at 45 minutes, accounting for applause time.

The applause coming, of course, from the media.

It seems every Democrat President, with the possible exception of Truman, has tried to be FDR.  Some of them, especially JFK and Clinton, understood that FDR's greatest gift was his ability to give the country reason to be hopeful, even if the facts didn't always back him up (or when his policies did more harm than good).

It's been an amazing ride, watching this guy take the Jimmah Carter approach to economic leadership, telling us how awful things are.  They just now figured out the "happy days are here again" approach?  Are they really this stupid?

So there won't be many details.  They need to get their stories straight.  This is from the AP article via Yahoo:

Barreling ahead on a mammoth agenda, Barack Obama is ready to offer a detailed sketch of the first year of his presidency, casting the nation's bleeding economy as a tangle of tough, neglected problems.

In a prime-time speech to Congress and millions watching at home, Obama will make his case Tuesday that much more has to be done to turn around the economy — a message he knows he must explain.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Tuesday that Obama will provide more details about his financial stability plan and measures to help the economy while delivering "a sober assessment about where we are and the challenges we face."

64 Obama is a crisis machine. He cannot fundamentally change that tone now if his life depended on it. He's in a race to get the laundry list of government and Liberal expansions passed (while the political cycle is as far removed from the next election as possible), and that is utterly dependent on Rahm Emanuel's crisis creation program. Speed and crisis are the building blocks to Team Obama's "hope and change."

Obama knows how to campaign and that's it. Well, he knows how to be the front man for a campaign machine, and that's what this all is. Consider the "stimulus" package which does almost no stimulation now and then kicks in about the time he'll be gearing up for the 2012 cycle with lots of money flowing to his particular voting blocks. He's selling us the handout packages to be used at his convenience come election time.

Besides, anything he criticizes is exactly what he has done, is doing, or is about to do. He lies without conscience. Rush Limbaugh had some good commentary on this very point yesterday, so take what Limbaugh said into consideration as you endure Obama's speechwriters' words.

Anything positive will be tempered and cautiously framed. Anything negative will be remembered, noted, and finally sprinkled with hopey-changey platitudes holding zero specifics.

Prepare for a set of lies wrapped in projection and yet another campaign speech signifying nothing other than what the WhiteHouse/MSM (BIRM) thinks you want to hear.

Posted by: silly at February 24, 2009 05:41 PM (zplc6)

67 silly,

We'll see. There are ways to give an overall positive speech that can get wrapped in all sort of conditional coloring. For instance, "I have faith in America that she will prevail these dark times (that I inherited)..." Or, "We will employ the direly needed comprehensive healthcare reform to keep the nation strong..."

Is that cheerleading? Not to me, but to some it would appear so. In my possible examples, a shot was taken at the previous administration, the nation is in crisis because of it, the situation is dire, and huge government expansion is the key to survival... and yet, it could be perceived as "hopeful."

I'm expecting layers of qualifiers during the speech -- and lots of spin after the speech to praise Obama and bash his critics. Obama won't do the bashing because he's hopeful. His surrogates and the MSM (BIRM) will be outsourced those duties.

70 Health care is the only issue that worries me vis a vis Obama.

Terrorism will get people riled up, taxes can always be lowered again, payoffs can be exposed, but a national SOCIALIST program will never end.

71 65 Many of the posters at this site are racist. Most of them are not very bright. And all of them are obnoxious. Came here by mistake, and won't be back. Seriously, examine yourselves, people: What are you hoping to accomplish? Do you realize how moronic you sound?

Wow!  I just don't know what to say about your comments, other than how thankful I am to have had you step into my life today and enlighten me to the miserable life in which I exist.  I'm horrified at what I've become.  There is no excuse I can offer.  It's obvious that I was a fetus that should have been aborted.  Damn my Mother!  Damn the government for failing to do the right thing for the future of this country.  I accept responsibility for my disgusting words, my sinful behaviour, everything.  I now leaving knowing that the world will be a better place without me.  Marc, please continue to enlighten the unenlightened..  Marc, Please forgive me!  Click! BANG!

A feeling of calm immediiately rushes over Marc.  He knows that he must continue the good work.  He knows it will be done.
