HBO Film Taking Chance And Honoring The Fallen

Tonight the film Taking Chance premiers on HBO (8pm est). The film tells the story of two Marines who never met in life but whose lives became forever connected after one of them fell in battle in Iraq.

The movie is based on LtCol Michael R. Strobls story of escorting the body of Lance Corporal Chance Phelps home to his final rest.

LtCol Strobls story begins

Chance Phelps was wearing his Saint Christopher medal when he was killed on Good Friday. Eight days later, I handed the medallion to his mother. I didnt know Chance before he died. Today, I miss him.

If you havent read the letter that began it all, you owe it to yourself to do so. Naturally Blackfive has more on the story, including a note from the corpsman who was with Chance when he was killed.

Despite fears that the movie would take a political turn people who have seen the film dont seem to think it has in anyway. My DVR is set.

As for the second part of the story, the media and the left (but I repeat myself) have been agitating for years to show the return of soldiers KIA at Dover Air Force Base. Right now the policy, which dates back to the Bush 41s term, is under review.

While the press claims they have a right to be there (they dont) its clear theres another group, members of the military, who seem to be ignored by those who have a ghoulish fascination for flag draped coffins.

MCQ (again at Blackfive) makes this point well.

What the military does at Dover isn't something just prescribed by some regulation or manual. It is something done because it is the right and honorable thing to do. It's is the last private and intimate act the military community as a whole renders its lost family member before it turns them over to the public at large. It is, in reality, the final goodbye, a ceremonial relinquishment of their fallen comrade to the nation at large. From that point onward, the affair is public - as public as the family and news media wants to make it.

And that's what has me puzzled about this media demand to intrude on these intense and intimately private moments at Dover. The argument is that filming and photographing the flag covered transfer cases as they arrive in Dover will drive home the real cost of war, and Americans have a right to know that. Of course there are plenty of pictures which are now in the public domain, shot and smuggled out of Dover which will make that point, if necessary. There's really not any necessity to have more of what will look precisely like the photos already in existence. They make the point about the cost of war as well as any new pictures might.

Some Soldiers Mom also makes this point through the retelling of her sons experience escorting his friend home after he was KIA in Iraq.

Now, the military and military families arent monolithic and there are certainly diverging opinions about this and every matter within those communities. I just hope that the Department of Defense takes their views into full account when making this decision.

My guess and hope is this will be another case where President Obama confronts a very different reality than candidate Obama operated under. If he does resist calls to open these private honors up to public intrusion, it will be a good sign and there wont even be any change jokes to be made.

4 I posted this at Balckfive yesterday it was concerning Obambi's looking at the photo policy at Dover...this is an issue that hits home with me, because of what I had to do too many times in my career...

I've dealt with the press before concerning the deaths of servicemen (I was the Decedent Affairs Officer at NH 29 Palms for 2 years)...local rag writer would call up asking for info about deaths of people on base of in the local area, always threw out the line "the public needs to know" and "freedom of the press"...clown claimed he was a retired Marine on top of it. Got sick and tired of his calls and told him to shove his notepad and pen up his rear end and that he needed to gain permission from the family of the deceased before I would say anything to him or any member of the press...later found out that the Base PAO always gave out my number to the rag writer. The Marine Captain got an angry Navy Senior Chief crawling up his rear end with the Base Sgt Maj present...ans a private "counseling session" with the Base General...

The phone calls stopped after that...and the Captain had been quickly reassigned to a deploying Marine Infantry Battalion...

The last thing in the world that a grieving family needs to deal with is a member of the press prying into the circumstances surrounding the death of a loved one, especially while serving our country. They just need to leave the families alone...

The press needs to leave the families of the fallen alone..fuck them and their need to "let the public know"...fucking vultures...

10 Four thousand American lost is a very high price to pay. Few things, if any, could be worth that.

A strategic upheaval in the ME to our benefit just might be worth it. Starting the long delayed reform of Islam might be worth it. Luring our enemies by the thousands into a meat grinder might be worth it.

It will takes decades to play out, but IMHO we have made the right move, Mr. ryan.

11 "They" also said we would not be able to stomach war if  it meant women soldiers would die. "They" think we are stupid, uninformed, and uncaring. We know that's not true.

"They" always underestimate Americans.

12 What the dumbass libs don't understand about the Iraq war is that it was also STRATEGIC. Look at Iraq, it borders Saudia Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Iran, and Kuwait. We now have access to the borders of these problem areas. It was suppossed to be a deterrent to bad behavior of any of these regimes, but the libs undermining of this has caused those countries to now think that they can get away with anything.

Bush had a toothless response to Iran's nukes, and Obama may just give them the plans and triggers for their bomb.

Syria had started to cut back on their help of Hezbelloh, but now do it freely.

Bush/Cheney had the right idea, but the libs fucked us.(I can say fucked can't I?)

13 Sounds like a good movie. Saw a trailer - it looked good. However, why is it the only kind of current war/military movie Hollywood can make that isn't about soliders-as-monsters is the soldiers-as-victims movie? What about the soldiers-as-heroes idea?

(apologies to Marines. I'm using soldier as the collective for any military member)

14 The media could post themselves just outside of Dover.  It's not real hard to figure out what is coming out the gate.

But then they'd look just like the vultures they truly are.

I don't see alot of interest in filming re-enlistment ceremonies.  The public has a right to know about them too.

24 The Press are a bunch of freaking vultures. As a former military member myself I can honestly say I'd rather the Press ate the bullets and had to wave good bye to some of their comrades with all that sappy bull-crap they shoveled self-servingly on the anchor from ABC who got zapped over in Iraq. One of them gets it, just one , and it's Pulitzer Prize time...a dozen, a hundred soldiers or Marines get it and it barely rates a blurb on the evening News schpiel. These Press Maggots make my stomach turn over.

Would they like someone from DoD PAO hanging around the ABC or NBC HQ in NYC hoping for a photo of one of the Press Corps being brought in by hearse after getting fragged or blown up over in the sandbox? They'd promptly refer to the military as "vultures" and rail about the "lack of respect" and "privacy for a fallen reporter", as if the Press rates more respect than the military. Turnabout is never fair play for these assclowns. What a bunch of cockwhistles.

Again, these 'people', if I can call them that, make me sick.

Lest add some perspective to the casualties

Tarawa 1943, three days 1000 KIA

Iwo Jima 1945, about 37 days 6800 KIA

Pelelieu 1944 about one month, 1794 KIA

Invasion of Normandy 1944, One Day 1465 KIA

Ia Drang Valley 1965, four days 1037 KIA

During the approximately six month long Tet Ofensive, the US lost about 3400 KIA

I have no comments; draw your own conclusions.

Does anyone really understand why Iran is acting in such a bold and reckless manner?  Saddam is gone; that's why.  With an impotent Iraq, there is no one in the region that the Iranians fear.

I don't give a damn how many Shiites suffered under his regime. We are at war with militant Islam. In retrospect, Iraq was a mistake, just like Pelelieu, Aachen, and the Hurtgen Forest.  We desprerately need a secular thug in the middle East on our side; we could have had one.  Our grandchildren will suffer dearly because of our feeble-minded leaders do not understand or else refuse to understand the danger of unrestrained Islamic expansion.

The Iraq and Afghanistan each have a new constution with the Quran as the core, Americans died for this?

We desprerately need a secular thug in the middle East on our side; we could have had one.

Which is an extrodinary assumption on your part. You are assuming that if things were left as before that saddam Hussein would be benign to the interests of the United States in the Middle East. If past performance is indicative of future behavior then we were right to remove him for that alone. saddam Hussein was a destablizing influence in the middle east.

The Iranian are acting as they are because they are afraid of the new players in the Middle East. Iraq and the US. 75% of the population of Iran is under 30 years old. Iran is having a difficult time controlling their own young people who see the people next door enjoying a lot more freedoms than they do.

We will do in Iraq, if the current administartion lets us, do what we have always done with the countries we liberate. Occupy and guide, and eventually, by treaty, lease strategic bases.

Iran is watching the clock run down on their fundamentalist regime.

I fear that Iran will use a military strike to "restart their clock."

Iran is having a difficult time controlling their own young people who see the people next door enjoying a lot more freedoms than they do.

All the more reason the worry about a desperate regime doing something outrageous.

The Iranian are acting as they are because they are afraid of the new players in the Middle East.

They don't seem to me to be acting like they are afraid of anything.

One more thing, to the devout Muslim, death in the conduct of jihad is the best thing that could happen to them.  To a true believing Shiite, creating chaos to bring the Mahdi (twelfth Imam) out of the well will be their salvation.

Devout Muslim jihadists fear nothing, they love death and they do not differentiate between infidel soldier and infidel civilian.  To them, there are no innocent infidel civilians.  If Iran lashes out and the retaliation results in one million dead Iranians, those dead Iranians are also martyrs, and will receive their reward in Muslim heaven.

No, I don't think the Iranian leaders fear anything, because the real leaders of Iran are the Muslim clergy.

Scaring the war out of people with coffin photos is a Vietnam thing. In other wars, such publicity was the easiest way to stir up the Kill-Them-All reflex. Americans cherish their current image as unflappable professional warriors backed by a populace of "unwilling imperialists."  The Gentlemen of the Press--having helped to create the stereotype, had they only the sense of history of their own Estate--ought to consider that they are playing with fire here.

The Press is not done with its task of civilizing the Americans into pacifism. Perhaps the smart money is on coddling their smug misapprehension. The current J-School generation has never seen the Americans in rage. The world should hope they do not bumble into goading us. We just may be as bad as they say we are. At the very least, we should keep them guessing.

Should coffin processions become a daily news item, the printed reaction of certifiable agonists is pretty predictable.  What news managers ignore to their peril is what emotions their video feed may engender in living rooms and bars, out where people really live.

41 It's the next afternoon and I am sticking with what I said yesterday: the Press are frakking vultures, and would gladly show our dead to stop a war because they, as a "column" or "estate"  lack even the most basic guts or sense of national urgency. They are the kind of maggots that infested Rome at the end, preferring to train and arm their enemies in order not to have to bear the burden of war themselves.
In the end, their actions (and their inactions) spelled their doom.

I think the same can be said of our own Press, particularly the print media, which as anyone who reads the imterwebs and sees this blog knows, is already heading for the last round up. The NYT is running on a loan from a gangbanger Mexican Billionaire or they'd already be selling more assets and cutting printing to keep the doors of the Old Gray Whore open at all...

Things have consequences, and  the Press trying to use our Honored Fallen as a chip in their twisted fantasies of stopping all wars they don't approve of is beyond the pale. They did this to Johnson, even though he was a Dem's Dem, so this shit is engrained in their shitty DNA, not just acquired in J School. Reporters are assholes, but I repeat myself.

My thank yous to Kevin Bacon and whoever greenlighted this HBO project. Almost makes up for the shitty ending to Sopranos a couple of seasons ago.
Who the hell ever decided to end a NJ mob series in a diner with a family settling their fat greasy hides down to eat and then fade out to mothing? Is that art?
I call bulllshit: this gets HBO a measure of the way back to tolerable.

43 It was certainly worth watching, if for nothing else the exposition of the respect that our military shows for our fallen. Whatever political message may have been intended was benign, and certainly not enough to irritate me; and I get irritated very, very easily at stuff like this.

Once again: well done, and worth watching.
