Clinton "Disappoints" on Tibet

Hillary doesn't placate.

Paying her first visit to Asia as the top US diplomat, Clinton said the United States would continue to press China on long-standing US concerns over human rights such as its rule over Tibet.

"But our pressing on those issues can't interfere on the global economic crisis, the global climate change crisis and the security crisis," Clinton told reporters in Seoul just before leaving for Beijing.

A year ago, when it wasn't their problem to deal with, they were sniping and badgering Bush to stay away from the Olympics. Resolutions were passed. Letters were written.

Sometimes it's like watching a kid get a job, and checking account, and start paying their own bills for a change.

1 The wimpiness of this administration will cause great harm to this country. Obama promised to bring 'respect' back to the country. They are laughing at us  now.

At least with Bush, they feared us. Fear is good. Keeps the nuts away.

12 robtr,

I agree.  But the fact that Obama's supporters truly thought he wouldn't throw Tibet under the bus is just too delicious to ignore.  Also when one realizes we're having to turn a blind eye to what China is doing in Tibet so that they will be willing to buy up some of the bad debt Dodd and Frank forced on us it really is worth noticing, loudly.

I'd be cool if Hillary played hardball with the Chinese. We didn't defeat Communist Russia by kissing up to them and telling them how we just can't quit them. The Chinese are an evil, soul-crushing regime. Free people and free markets (I know, I know, we don't have either - bear with me) can overcome anything. Except for the Socialist-fueled Great Depression, our country had significantly worse depressions with more bank failures and higher unemployement and got through them in four years or less. We can adapt, we can recover, we can succeed.

Screw the Chinese and the rights-shredding horse they road in on.

I'm not personally acquainted with any American conservative Buddhists. Must be just the way things work out. As much as we like to hold a sense of reverence for Very-Old-World Buddhism, the home-grown variety has mostly had a firm slant to the left. With a lot of heavy thinking and feeling behind it. And politics.

So American Buddhists have a heavy overlap with ideological proponents of hard-line ComChin. Buddhism must be a remarkable discipline indeed, or their heads would have exploded by now.

60 I like Tibet.  I just wasn't surprised that Obama threw it under the bus with all his other inconvenient promises.  I wasn't surprised that he didn't listen to the people he conned into voting for him on the issue either.  That's sort of his m.o.  Maybe you should take this policy reversal up with him now that he's in the White House.  I'm sure you can change his mind, Chris.

Posted by: The Obvious at February 21, 2009 01:07 AM (1g+FW)

61 Chris, I think he's more making the point about how the Dems are now in a position to worry about the consequences of their choices rather than sniping from irrelevancy.  And remember, it's the Clintons who consider China to be 'our strategic partner.'

If we go to war with China somewhere down the road, it'll probably be on behalf of our friends in Taiwan.  'Liberating' our debt and Tibet may be side benefits, but not the purpose.  And keep in mind that an awful lot of ethnic cleansing would have to be done to free Tibet as a practical matter.

Posted by: Methos at February 21, 2009 01:12 AM (+rq0E)

62 "Sometimes it's like watching a kid get a job"... Literally.  China is literally saving Obama's ass right now, by not dumping all their dollar holdings and U.S. Treasury bonds - as the Chinese ought to be doing, due to the way Bernanke and Obama are printing Monopoly-game dollars that will be worthless by the time the Chinese-owned bonds come due.
