Change! Obama On NAFTA And Trade

Once upon a time Obama described NAFTA as “devastating” and “a big mistake”. After pointing out that was mere words, he has been continuously shifting to a more reasonable position on trade.

Yesterday his 'evolution' continued as he faced the facts of life as President and having to deal with your largest trading partner. Needless to say NAFTA is suddenly a lot more palatable.

In a joint news conference, Obama said he wants to find a way to keep his campaign pledge to toughen labor and environmental standards -- and told Harper so -- but stressed that nothing should disrupt the free flow of trade between neighbors.

"Now is a time where we've got to be very careful about any signals of protectionism," the president said. "Because, as the economy of the world contracts, I think there's going to be a strong impulse on the part of constituencies in all countries to see if we -- they can engage in beggar-thy-neighbor policies."

The president's message served as a reminder of last year's private assessment by Canadian officials that then-candidate Obama's frequent criticism of NAFTA was nothing more than campaign speeches aimed at chasing support among Rust Belt union workers.

"Much of the rhetoric that may be perceived to be protectionist is more reflective of political maneuvering than policy," the Canadians concluded in a memo after meeting with Austan Goolsbee, a senior campaign aide and now a member of Obama's Council of Economic Advisers.

Why it's almost as if Mr. Hope and Change lied to his whack job friends on the left! The horror. Of course the real horror is that he will make it up to them in some other way but at least on this issue he's not making things worse. Small blessings and all of that I suppose.

Below the fold...video of Obama during the primary promising to opt out of NAFTA if he didn't get labor and environmental standards renegotiated.

Yeah, not so much.

And now those two geniuses are running US foreign policy. Wonderful.

16 Feh. I don't trust this, either. Obama, I think, just spins a circle - never really going anywhere, never picking any one direction and sticking to it. He'll throw NAFTA under the bus next time he's at a labor function, then screw labor next time he's in Canada. This isn't an endorsement or attachment to NAFTA. It's just a matter of what kind of bill gets to his desk first. If Pelosi and Reid send him something reneging on NAFTA (maybe something with "Buy American" restrictions) he'll sign it.

This just means he'll push that much harder to get Card Check - aka, the You Don't Really Want That Union Goon To Corner You In a Dark Alley, Do You? program - passed. Remember, all this crap has nothing to do with jobs or prosperity. It has everything to do with funneling dollars into the pockets of people who will help elect Democrats: which means not union rank-and-file, but union bosses.

Call me a cynical bastard if you like, but if you remember that Obama is just a Chicago precinct captain writ large, it all makes sense.

22 Well, he can't very well come out and say that by "toughen labor and environmental standards" he means "f*ck Mexico" - I mean, be serious, on the whole Canada has much tougher environmental and labor standards than the US (and thus lower productivity), but he could not very well come out and say that - it would be keeping brown down.

Obama coin: Change you can't quite believe in
Franklin Mint is offering this 'authentic' altered half dollar for $9.95. No, make that more like $22.
By David Colker

So you got yourself one of those widely advertised Obama coins from Franklin Mint that's covered in 24-carat gold and depicts the president-elect.

With it came a "certificate of authenticity," signed by the 36th director of the U.S. Mint, Jay W. Johnson.

The good news: The coin, priced at $9.95, has guaranteed monetary value.

The bad: That guaranteed value is only 50 cents.

I'd have felt better if NAFTA had really lived up to its expectations and had truly opened up new markets for our goods instead of merely transferring a gaggle of good paying manufacturing jobs south of the border, down Mexico way. Free trade only works on an even playing field.

I'm not a protectionist or a union member, but looking out for America's interests first seems to me a common sense policy. Which explains why it won't happen.

Because of His Divinity, no doubt.

I'm more and more puzzled, every day, at the swift growth of my apprehension, and at the denial spread across the nation. This stock market is headed to 3500... and I am certain most of the 52% (homo douchebagus) have investments in equities. We've lost 2000 points since Unicorn planted his hooves and spoor on the Oval Office carpet. Is the religious lunacy that grips the 52% so powerful that they are happy being bankrupted?

The rest of us are not that much of a minority... we are the 48%. At least this group ought to be spitting, snarling mad. Where is our voice? Is the MSM still so powerful that they can ignore us utterly? Or rather, how can anyone take the MSM seriously any longer?

RE: Obama coins

What's great is that Barry isn't going to get his face on one of those shiny dollar coins you see out and about. They release four a year (I think), and the program runs for ten years. If a president isn't dead, he doesn't get on a coin. So we probably won't get one with W. We also, however, won't get one with Barry. BOO HOO!

Of course, Congress is probably working on a bill that will give Unicorn Man an exemption. It'll be fun to see them explain why Barry gets one and Clinton and Bush don't (if the latter two are still alive in ten years, of course).
