I hope Hitchens is in pain. The key to this is in the statement “Hitch and two others…”. From the description it appears that he took it upon himself to deface this poster knowing that even the local government was scared to fuck with it. That should have told him something right there. Ace didn’t say anything about the other two people so I am assuming that they were not involved with defacing the poster. So Hitch marches in where angels fear to tread and invites a reprisal. That’s all well and good for him being “stupid-brave” but what about the other two people with him.

 

The reason this story stirs me up is because a similar thing happened to me once when I was in the Navy. We used to have this one trouble making fucker we called Okie (for obvious reasons). At any rate he liked to get into fights and when we went out steaming he went with us it seemed like we were always in a fight or dodging one.

 

To make a long story short one night we finished up a nice round of drunken debauchery and headed back to the pier. The ship was anchored out in the bay because there was no room at the piers. When we got to the pier  we find that there are about 25 or so blacks waiting on one of the P-Boats and one officer who is in charge of the pier and the operation. The blacks are doing something or other that this Okie fucker find offensive and he precedes to start stirring the pot.

 

I pulled him aside by the collar and told him to shut his stupid dumb fuck mouth or I would leave his drunken ass on the pier by himself. The officer came out of his shack and asked me if I could control the idiot or did he need to call the AP. Anyway between the two of us we got the idiot to shut up and avoided being beaten to death.

 

Now if there had only been 4 or 5 of them and 4 or 5 of us maybe it would have been different but stupid is stupid. That was the last time I ever went anywhere with that idiot.

And, has others have pointed out, he put his colleagues in danger in the process. Do understand: when I say "socialism", I am referring to its text-book definition, its a word that has been abused and thus fostered misunderstandings worldwide. Of course, the VAST VAST VAST majority of nations that are called "socialist" are nothing of the sort (often actually totalitarian dictatorships...but you have to admit it socialism sounds better!). Stalin's Russia was absolutely not socialist (farmers were dying so that the State could sell off the goods, that's the antithesis of socialism), and many of the nations 'behind the Curtain' were not socialist.

As for true Socialism - there aren't that many examples. There are capitalist democracies that employ some socialist principles - Canada & some European nations qualify (limiting private healthcare AND having the entire population pools funds to provide healthcare to all... Again, that's an idealized, heavily summarized version). As for the other side of the spectrum, that is full blown MARXISM - there are even fewer example. I can think of only 2 that tried to implement Marx's (flawed) vision - some of the hippie communes and of course: the Kibbutz Movement in Israel.

The Kibbutz Movement, esp the Shomer Hatzair kibbutz were Marxist purists! Kids were raised together (so that no kid got more or less from school), there was a centralized dining room (so othat the community ate together and everyone got the same nutrition & access), everything was discussed by the community, people were allotted the same quantity & quality of essential goods, some kibbutz' even debated allowing teapots in the home for they feared that doing this would mean husbands and wives had more access to each other than other people in the community (i.e.you are breaching equality because by making tea at home you are spending more time with each other than with the community! CRAZY! ... 'in a nutshell' : individual did not own anything but as community members they owned everything (t'seems even each other!). Of course, the kibbutz experiment, except for a few notable examples, also failed. Alas: people aren't born equal, and lack of individuality stifles freedom & innovation.
