Spokesman: Obama Administration Opposes The Fairness Doctrine

Of course as we know, all Obama statements come with an expiration date so get out your salt and spread it to suit your taste.

The statement is the first definitive stance the administration has taken since an aide told an industry publication last summer that Obama opposes the doctrine -- a long-abolished policy that would require broadcasters to provide opposing viewpoints on controversial issues.

"As the president stated during the campaign, he does not believe the Fairness Doctrine should be reinstated," White House spokesman Ben LaBolt said.

Of course he was sort of kind of against the Buy America requirement in the so-called "stimulus" bill but that survived.

Given how he's gone back on other campaign promises that his base was counting on, I'm not sure referring to a promise that his opponents likes is the most reasuring thing in the world at this point. Let's Hope this is one thing he doesn't Change his mind on.

1 Of course he's against the Fairness Doctrine.

But he's not against, say, a sensible regulatory scheme enacted by the FCC that just happens to shut down anyone opposed to Him and his gloriousness.

Posted by: XBradTC at February 18, 2009 03:28 PM (d0h53)

2 Exactly: he's opposed to that specific manner of silencing dissent, because it is unpopular and has a bad reputation. Silencing dissent though? That's just fine.

3 Yeah, he's against the Fairness Doctrine, but he's all in favor of local content regulations.

Posted by: Iblis at February 18, 2009 03:30 PM (9221z)

4 He'll say he opposes it, then sign the bill when his fellow Dem's do his dirty work for him getting it passed. He'll claim it was the overwhelming will of American the people so he had no choice but to sign it.

Of course Specter will vote for it's passage so he'll also be able to say it was bi-partisan.

7 Is this going to be a thread where we can list the things Obama said he was for (or against) and has since changed his mind? Here's mine: Was not going to allow lobbyists in his administration. What's the last count, 17?

8 I'll jump on the bash boat on this subject as soon as he changes his mind or supports it under a different name. In the meantime, I count it under the positive column.  The score is now 2 positive and 43 negative.

Posted by: polynikes at February 18, 2009 03:33 PM (m2CN7)

9 Yeah, the Fairness Doctrine kind of implies that 'both sides' will get to be heard.  I seriously doubt Obama is in favor of that.

Posted by: Brendan at February 18, 2009 03:33 PM (saRwI)

10 I mean, unless the debate is "Barack Obama: Actual divine being sent by God to save us, or merely the greatest man ever to live".  Then he might be in favor of both sides being heard.

Funny, but Axlerod & Gibbs didn't exactly shut the door on this - and that's in the same article.

As others have pointed out - it won't be called "The Fairness Doctrine", but some variation of "The Right thing to Do".

12 I wonder how come broadcasters ( CBS, NBC etc.) aren't required to give time to opposing viewpoints on controversial viewpoints now? Boy, would I like to see someone like El Rushbo sitting at the "round table" when they're talking about the stimulus bill etc. You know, someone that can, and actually will, argue the constitutional or conservative side.

Standard good cop/bad cop bullshit.

Obama, the "good cop", stands over and above the petty fray of partisan politics claiming hes aginst it.

The "bad cops", i.e.,  Reid, Pelosi, Frank Rich, et al. push for, and get, teh Fairness Doctrine reinstated.

Voila!

He thinks someone leaked the "letter" to O and that's why it's even being discussed. he also cited the checkered shelf-life history of Obama's pronouncements. There was a discussion along these lines over at LGF...basically, yeah, no "Fairness Doctrine."  Instead, something called "localism" so that groups like ACORN can decide whether a broadcaster is being "fair" based on the makeup of the neighborhood.

In other words, it's the Fairness Doctrine, so don't kid yourself.

Maybe have the 'bad cops' lump it in with another stimulus bill or some other idiocy, claim the whole bill has to be passed NOW, so the crisis doesn't become worse. See if they can sneak it through.

If there is too much opposition relating to the Fairness Doctrine, the worst case scenario for Obama then is to take it out of the bill "in the spirit of bipartisanship".

BTW, doesn't 'The Fairness Doctrine' sound like one of those bills that were always being passed by government pod people in Atlas Shrugged (the "Anti Dog Eat Dog Rule", or something like that)?

But attack the conservative stations in the name of "diversity" or for the sake of "local programming," and he can accomplish a lot of the same ends without turning off half the liberals out there.

Maybe it's all just a ruse to push all of the AM talk show hosts onto satellite, with the hopes that most of the bitter, gun-clingin' flyover-state listeners will be too poor (with the economy as it is, and all) to afford sat radio subscriptions.  Once you can't get your free daily fix of Glenn Beck, then that whole problem of pesky "accountability" and "criticism" all just goes away...
