| Obama's War?President Obama has now taken ownership of the war in Afghanistan and stepped fully into his role as Commander in Chief.
The first thing I want to do is call BS on my headline. It was wrong when the anti folks on the left talked about W's war, Iraq and Afghanistan are both America's wars and have been from the start. It was disgraceful for them to act that way and I will fight any attempt to do that to President Obama. Unlike many of the Born Again But let's get back to Afghanistan. First I will repeat my admonition to Obama to make sure he is not simply trying to cover his political ass and campaign promises by sending more troops to that hell hole without the commitment to work toward victory. What victory means is something we can discuss, but it is more than simply adding a couple of combat brigades to be pulled back when pressure from his left wing spins up. Afghanistan is the longest of long wars and if the effort is not going to reflect this, then don't make it. Use the troops you are sending to squash the bad guys where they have weaseled into, and then let's bomb their bases flat and trust that time-honored dictum "Rubble doesn't make trouble". I have been in a journalism fellowship for the past days for military reporters and we have met with a number of experts on A-stan and questioned them intensively. The overall consensus I see is that there is no history of, and little likelihood of building, a modern nation state there. Additionally without some answer to the free reign and safe havens in the tribal areas of Pakistan, it will be extremely difficult to create security. This requires a strategy that is not too ambitious but more importantly that is not simply political cover attempting to prove that Obama is not the "cut & runner" all his calls on Iraq would suggest. Any legitimate effort would certainly require an effort comprising all of his four years in office, and likely beyond. That will take a will to face up to calls of "quagmire" and "bring the troops home". I hope President Obama can learn from the fact that he was dead wrong on Iraq, and will listen to Gen. Petraeus and the folks who gave us the winning strategy there as he and his team look for answers in Afghanistan. Comments1
I don't know what the right move is in Afghanistan. But I'm convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that whatever the right move is......BO won't make it. He's idealogically opposed to doing what's in our country's best interests. Unless by happenstance it also is in his personal best interest.

The only reason Lord Unicorn sent fresh troops to Talibanland is just what Jimbo suggests... to prove he's not a beta-male. That he won't cut and run. Whatever happens in Afghanistan is just what happens. President Waffles won't spend much time on that minor matter of vanity. He's too busy establishing Italian style corporate fascism at home. Minus the military uniforms, and frosted with a fresh coat of metrosexual gloss.

Uncle Jim I agree with you except I do think it is good to call this Obama's War but not in the sense of his only but his "too". It's important to make clear to those who would cut and run that there is no up side politically to not giving our troops the best shot we can at victory once we commit them.

I have no such high hopes for Obama. He sent those troops to put on a show that he's half-serious about fighting the Taliban. Expect to see everyone come home by 2012.

Assholes on Fox saing they are sending the troops to a province with "drug" probelms but they have no "drug destruction program". My god, are they going to turn this into another war on drugs? If that is the answer what we need to do is go beyond the "rubble doesn't make trouble" and use the "glass can't whip my ass" stage. Posted by: Vic at February 18, 2009 11:15 AM (f6os6) 12

Yeah, I'd like to see any links to a good plan for Afghanistan. I have virtually zero hope that it can be anywhere near as successful as Iraq in terms of setting up a functioning central government. I'll be very happy if we can just leave it in such a way that the Taliban don't take back over and terrorist groups don't have havens and support to plan attacks on the U.S. Actually, I'd even settle for just the latter. I'm just not sure how we get there if we don't maintain some presence there indefinitely and I'd really prefer we don't have to do that.

I was in the Army for 12 years. I was taught in basic training how to kill the enemy. There was never any training about being a fucking peace keeper. Peace is obtained by defeating the enemy. Obama doesn't know this because he's an effeminate little pussy that would wet himself if he came within 100 yards of a basic training camp. He is not my Commander in Chief and never will be. He is a traitor to this country who as CIC has yet to make a pro U.S military statement. His bullshit statements about how great our military is and how well they were performing in Iraq only came about once the surge started to succeed and he had to try and remove the egg from his face. He’s always been a prominent member of the anti-military camp and always will be. Hey Obama, Fuck You, Fuck Michelle and Fuck that little Bitch Rahmadahm Emanuel. Oh, and one more thing. Fuck You!

Good post, Jimbo. You're right. It isn't Obama's war. It is our war. Politics stops at the waterline. Yeah, I know that is more honored in the breach than in the observance by our democratic friends, but we fight our wars with the administration we have, not the administration we want.

make sure he is not simply trying to cover his political ass and campaign promises by sending more troops to that hell hole without the commitment to work toward victory You're just saying that to get it on the record, right? I'll tell you what frightens me about Obama and the GOP's approach to the military. It's that we routinely draw a line in the sand based on some martial value or other that the Left considers anachronistic and naive when it considers it at all. They're not shared values, and yet Republicans naively believe that if we appeal to a mutual patriotism, one day the light will click on with these folks. "Obama wouldn't dare do that...!" Why yes, he would. And he will. And the GOP will draw another line in the sand. And he'll cross it again, and we'll lose again. I'd wager money on how long it takes for the first Republican lawmaker to declaim "we're not going to punish the troops by voting against funding war in Afghanistan!" Of course, funding is the only meaningful weapon in policymaking anymore (self-respect and trust having gone out the window as values described above), and we'll give him money to execute a noncommittal "show war" to bolster his numbers (as the poster describes). Appeal to shared values = recipe for electoral exile. Posted by: General Zod at February 18, 2009 11:22 AM (nwEiU) 17
I'm no expert on that country, but what I have read is that those people are essentially living the same lifestyle as the ancestors did 500 years ago. Absolutely nothing "first world" about them. They have never-ending tribal skirmishes as each tribal leader is always trying to kill/take over the other nearby tribal leaders' lands. The only time they ever take a break from fighting with each other is when an outside force (Europeans/Russians/Americans) comes in to stop the violence and the tribes then unite to fight against the so-called oppressors. Once the battle is done they go back to fighting each other. Not much can be accomplished with mindsets like that.

>>I've yet to hear of a "winning strategy" for a country that has no civilized history to speak of. I haven't seen any winning strategy, no, but I might argue a little [very little] about the civilised history bit. They weren't ever close to western forms of civilisation, but they were at one point a damned sight more modern than they are now, back when they still had their monarchy going, circa 50s-60s. The problems started with the afghan commies, then the russians who came in to bolster their failures, then the taliban. Ken: Spot-on. Chaos is the natural condition there, and effort spent there to engender democracy/rule of law/respect for life and property is effort wasted. Not all the world can--or wants to--be first-world. "Rubble doesn't make trouble," cited by Jimbo in his post, is about the size of it. Problem is, "victor's guilt" drives us to follow busting up the joint by trying to put it back together in a construct that makes sense to us...but not to them. Worked in postwar Europe due to civilizational commonalities; won't work in Afghanistan because, simply put, we play Wii and they play polo with a stuffed goat's skull and bake each other in Conex boxes.

My biggest concern in Afganistan is what we are willing to accept as victory. I do not see how we can defeat the Taliban outright as long as they have safe havens in Pakistan. I also fear that the goal of a strong, functioning democracy is not entirely practical, considering the existing tribal structures and factional warlords. Plus, the only way we can even get to the fight and support our troops there is for other countries to allow us to pass through their territory. This places our entire capability to conduct this conflict on the diplomatic mercies and goodwill of others. We are already being tossed out of one air base in Central Asia. What happens if Pakistan decides not to let us come through their territory anymore? along with the Russians? The result could be catastrophic. This is a land that has swallowed many an Army whole.
I have little doubt Petraeus can pacify the country in the short term, but as long as the enemy has a safe haven to rest, regroup, and refit, I do not see long term stability. The Catch 22 is, we can't risk hitting the safe havens in Pakistan for fear of destabilizing the an already fragile Gov't in Pakistan and thereby placing our supply lines in jeopardy. This is a tough deal- I pray for the troops and victory everyday. My concern is I do not see much of a window for success.

The neocons were right to think that we could make something of Iraq to
serve as an example to the Middle East, and we largely have. We don't
have the 100 years it will take to bring Afghanistan up to the modern
era from a civilizational standpoint. It is sounding like the question is not whether to leave, but how do we leave in such a way that the global jihad can't claim they ran us off and use it as a recruiting tool. In retrospect, the time to leave was probably 5 years ago shortly after we smashed the Taliban and sent them scurrying into their holes. Perhaps a quick surge that quiet things down again will be decisive enough to give us another opening for leaving on top. Yet another problem is that western Afghanistan has come increasingly under the control and influence of Iran.

The Obamunist is not worried about Afghanistan. The One doesn't care about their freedom, or raising up a free, democratic country(something he is not).
The Obamunist is putting a larger reaction force on the border of a potentially nuke powered terrorist country, where a large percentage of the population believes it is a high honor to blow themselves - and whatever enemy is in reach - to smithereens for Allah. Afghanistan and its welfare are completely irrelevant to the Marxist 'Bamster. Posted by: J David at February 18, 2009 12:04 PM (RTuay) 30

The One doesn't seem to understand that the enemy doesn't wear a fucking uniform anymore. The enemy looks just like every other asshole walking around in their society. They have chosen to hide behind the civilian population. They are the ones that utilize men, women and children to walk into public places and blow themselves up. They are the ones that behead people. They are the ones that have public stonings, gang rapes, etc., all in the name of religion. Contrary to the media and the UN, they are the barbaric savages of this world, not our military.. The enemy has shown us how they intend to fight this war. We need to declare how we will. If the civilian population chooses to live with the enemy, they too are the enemy. If the enemy is allowed to fight from within their house mud hut, that hut becomes a legitimate target. Anyone carrying carrying a weapon who is not wearing a military uniform is a legitimate target. The civilian population needs to understand that they either leave the area if the enemy moves in, or they die. It's as simple as that. If they move out when the enemy moves in, it will immediately expose the movement of the enemy. They can decide to either help their cause by supporting our troops, or die because they choose to support the enemy. If they do choose to continue to live their stone age style life as mentioned in earlier posts, then we should leave and let them continue in their pursuit of perfection. I was in the military during the post Vietnam era and would gladly have fought for this country. I have a grown son that would also do the same. However, if our brave members of the military are putting their lives on the line to follow orders from the CIC, and the CIC is going to send troops into harms way, he better let them go in and kill the fuckers with the goal of winning and not just fucking around for political posturing. If anyone needs a recent example of politics interfering with a military being able to complete their task, just look at the Israeli Operation Cast Lead. They had hamass on the ropes and could have ended their rule in Gaza, but the asswipe politicians had them prematurely stop their effort just like they did at the end of 2006 Lebanon war. The Israeli military should have told the world that they can take their opinion and shove it. Politicians that govern like that are traitors to their military and their country. We'll know by the end of the summer whether the BIC (buttfuck in charge) is going to allow our military to do their job or if he is posturing. He'll have to show his hand by then. Until then, I just have one thing to say to the him. Fuck You and that bisexual unicorned horse you rode in on.

As a proud veteran of the US Army from 91-95, it pains me that people in this country base their patriotism on whomever is in power at any given time. As a kid, I was proud to be an American. As an adult, I have always been proud to be an American. As a corpse, I'll still be a proud American. True patriotism is not a faucet that you can turn on/off based on the politics or current events of the day.
