Postmaster General Got Huge Pay Bump While Simultaneously Calling for Cuts in Delivery

The price of a stamp will go up 2 cents in May. The Postmaster General has proposed reducing postal delivery to five days a week. And he gets compensated (if the Washington Times is correct) $800,000 in pay, benefits, and perks.

The changes, approved by the Postal Board of Governors and contained in a little-noticed regulatory filing in December, brought Mr. Potter's total compensation and retirement benefits to more than $800,000 in 2008. That is more than double the salary for President Obama.

The new compensation package, much of it deferred to later years, goes beyond a newly beefed-up salary, now $263,575, that Congress arranged for him as part of a 2006 law to make top postal salaries more competitive with those in the private sector. At least four other postal officials got more than a quarter-million dollars in total compensation in 2008, according to Postal Service records reviewed by The Washington Times.

This misses the point. There are no comparable postal salaries in the private sector because it is illegal in this country for private companies to infringe on the postal service's monopoly. The post office, bless their hearts, tries so hard but suffers from having to please someone other than the customer and shareholder. That is, having to please Congress.

1 Clearly they need a bailout. Will a billion suffice? Nah, let's make it two just to be safe.

Or alternatively, we could just disband the whole fucking thing and let the private sector do it.

2 What an awesome deal the postal service has. It's a lot like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in that it gets to electively function like a private sector business or a goverment entity to suit the needs of the moment.

I bet one of those perks is getting a fucking sweet little white jeep to cruise his ass around.  How awesome would that be?  Going through peoples personal shit?  How much is that worth?  A lot.  That's how much.  Old school porn mags there for the taking.  Who's gonna call the Post Office and ask where their latest edition of Sun Tanned Tits,  or Prison Skank is?  Not me.  "Working" the front counter would be fun.  Doing that slow motion walk,  acting like you're pushing buttons that actually do something on that old Commodore 64 "remote data entry station",  telling the customer you'll be right back before retiring to the back for a few Zs - all perks.  All.  Hard to put a price on that shit.

I expect that the next things to suffer (even more, that is) will be the military and the national road system. I was wrong -- we're not going back to the Seventies, we're going back to the Thirties. For all of you civilians commenting at this site, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo and when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive drinking of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

20 The USPS does not receive "taxpayer funds". It operates on revenue generated through postage and fees. If you could show me where the money goes from the government to the Post Office, I'd be interested in seeing it. As a former mailman (10.5 years in Minneapolis and its suburbs), I can say that most of the PO's problems come form a bloated middle management that micromanges workers to ridiculous levels. Many people asked me why I didn't go into management, especially with my foot problems (don't get me started about government worker's comp). I would always tell them I didn't want to become a person I didn't like, forced to impose stupid rules that on the surface were supposed to enhance productivity (designed by those who had never done the job, of course), but instead sapped morale.

33 John FN Kerry...   Receiving Federal benefits and being subject to a Federally-created and protected monopoly that creates artificially high wages and prices at the expense of the consumer IS a Federal benefit. It's just more direct than seizing the money in collected taxes and then giving it to the USPO.

But don't feel too bad. We in the private sector know it's nice to have a place for workers to go that otherwise couldn't hack it in the real world. We know who the real servants are and it sure ain't the public ones.

Good.  Now I won't have to haul myself out to the mail box on Saturday to see if another set of bills came in.

@29 "Does Fed-x lose $2B a year?  If it did, that CEO would be drawing a base salary of whatever unemployment pays."

Let's hope.  But based on how bank execs are paid to run shit into the ground I'm starting to wonder.  Not to mention most auto industry execs.  Then they come hat in hand to the government to get us (taxpayers) to pay for their incompetence (largely encouraged/abetted by the government, of course) and expect to continue to get a 7 digit annual salary as a reward for outright failure.  Then we have folks complain that if those bailed out walking-dead banks can't pay absurdly high dollars then they'll be forced to make due with "lesser minds."  Yeah, right.  Heaven knows there's no bright guys out there willing to do the work for a measly half mill a year.  People who can run banks are just so damn rare.  I think a little fresh blood would do more good than harm when the odds of successfully reviving these screwed up banks is already close to zero.

Anyway, as annoying as that huge pay number is, I'm thinking that our over paid postmaster is the least of our problems.

My only real complaint against the post office (unless they've been intentionally losing my mail) is that they are protected from competition.  That's why the bozos in management are able to get away with "managing" it into the ground.  I've known postal workers who were fully aware of how good they had it and worked to do a good job, but were still driven to distraction by the number of counter productive and outright stupid things that their managers forced down on them.  If the PO was forced to become genuinely efficient or die out, then they'd have to get serious.

HatlessHessian,

If you knew how to read, I did say that I had left the Post Office. Also, if you think carrying mail is easy, I challenge you to spend 6 hours a day in subzero weather while carrying mail, avoiding falling on your ass on the ice and snow, and not getting frostbite, in Minneapolis. I did that for 10 f'ing winters. My ankle is permanently damaged. The so-called "real world" has been somewhat of a refuge for me, although I do miss carrying the mail in the summer. Maybe you live in a nice warm climate and have lazy mailmen, but be careful about painting groups of people with such a broad brush. With the POS management the Post Office has had for years, the letter carriers are the only thing that has kept it from sinking.

45 Naturally there is no exact equivalent in private industry to the postal monopoly.  One expects the Libertines to focus upon the point.

Now, if the argument were over privatizing mail services, or at least relaxing or eliminating government monopolies over them, we might find common ground.  This is NOT the question at hand, however.

The question is only whether, given the exigent circumstances, we ought hire executives to run the USPS at one level or another.  Do we want someone who could command $800K+ in the private sector, or ought we settle for some $200K bureaucrat?

Or we could settle on some Libertarian candidate who, while lacking in any real experience, might bring some particular knowledge of BSG and video gaming to the table.

The mail is going to be delivered by some quasi-government entity for the foreseeable future, and someone will run the operation.  Those who profess allegiance to the free market ought understand that in executives, as in any other commodity, you get about what you pay for.

Now, if the executive recommends cost-saving measures, isn't that guaranteed to disappoint someone?  How does this deserve different treatment than the cost savings proposed by the CEOs of private enterprises?  Are they to be mocked for their salaries, as well?

It is naturally difficult to maintain any consistency in such disjointed philosophies as Libertarianism.

That's well argued, Adjoran, but if you read the typical postal comments, they are seldom libertarian in nature. They'd be faux-conservative, get-off-my-lawn, stamps-used-to-be-two-cents arguments. Which is to say, no argument at all.  They'd be "ventative" in nature.  You get a lot of that.

The PMG's salary seems to be inflating at the rate of $50K/4 hours. One questions whether the price of his parking space ought to be charged against him. And he did cut the Inspection Service (which had furnished security for previous PMG's and a few other things), whence he arose, to the bone--gave most of it away, actually, and thereby hangs quite another tale. Nobody wants to hear it, though, because we're having too much fun. Hasn't settled down yet.
