| Warning Shot in the Coming Trade War? (chad)BEIJING — Measures in a $789 billion U.S. stimulus package that favor American goods are a "poison" that will hurt efforts solve the financial crisis, an editorial by China's official news agency said. ... "History and economics have told us, facing a global financial crisis, trade protectionism is not a solution, but a poison to the solution," the editorial said. ... Protectionism was a key concern of weekend meetings of the Group of Seven industrialized nations in Rome. U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner assured G-7 finance ministers on Saturday that the stimulus package would not violate the United States' commitment to free trade. Xinhua's editorial said protectionist measures taken during the Great Depression of the 1930s caused trade wars, hurting international trade. sourceIt's a sad day when the commies know more about free markets than the Congress and President of the United States. There will be no trade war - once they realize Obama's good intentions, there will be rainbows and skittles for all.

It's not that they know more about free markets than the Congress and the President. It's simply that China is starting to warm up to the idea and its benefits whereas the United States is being run by people hostile to the results of a society that benefits from free trade. Why all the concern? Obama has no intention of abiding by it. What Obama and Congress say is going to be a lot different from what they actually do. They are not accountable to anybody -- not even their moonbat base. Posted by: Darling at February 15, 2009 07:02 PM (QKQbN) 5
It won't be a war. The US will not fight. Obama will rollover and go whatever - I don't care about capitalism anyway.

Obama just needs to get hooked up with the Chinese money train .... Hillary should be able to help him with that ... then he will sing their praises and send them military tech to boot ... I might surmise
But China has too many USD bonds to trash US, and we need them to keep filling up our WalMarts ... it's a marriage made in hell ... Posted by: bill at February 15, 2009 07:11 PM (yXtKX) 9

Just this last week the Chinese said they will continue to buy our debt, bloated or not, and they also let out another secret: "...they hate us..." and still understand that only a complete tool like Urkel X, the Affirmative Action President could crimp the economic power of the US. They hope for a soft President who also understands how a free market actually works. They didn't quite get what they wanted.
They probably wanted someone who is as gutless as Urkel but a little more ready-to-go out of the box with making the American economy healthy enough to buy cheap Chinese products. Including hookers... Urkel X has a great book knowledge of commie-nomics©, which doesn't work. Actual real world results of commie-nomics© has been poor at best. I wish its was just incompetance on his part. he is hell bent on doing purposely doing everything to cripple this country and cause its down fall. Not just him but his advisors as well. Not one of them have told him how damging this will be? They know, they want it to happen. This is calculated, to weaken us beyond the crippling effect the stimulus will do. he is doing everything both financially and militarily to open us up for easy hostile takeover. Making sure he pisses of our allies as well so we have no one coming to our aid either.

Bingo. Everyone is STILL locked up debating the pro's and con's of this idiot's "policies" and failing to see the big picture. They will continue to see only what is on the surface, and until the moment it actually happens, will fail to see what this is really about. We are watching the end of the world. Hahaha they laugh, get a grip. Why, in four years we'll just take everything back, when B Hussein fails spectacularly! BS. In 4 years, the SCOTUS will be so drastically changed that nothing short of an armed rebellion will do. But very shortly, our second amendment rights will be changed so drastically, that that will not be possible. Ah who cares? Back to funny quips and political correctness. And please, respect your new overlords, the former minorities who bullied even those who really really really thought they were hard core conservatives... I tandemed 2 cheap Harbor freight 2000w/400wat surge inverters ($75 each on sale, w/10% off coupon) to this system and ran my furnace, fridge, DSL modem, laptop and 1 room of lights/tv. Maybe could have powered more. I've got less than $250 in this rube goldberg setup but it worked fine. I have it set up in a shed. I ran my 27 HP tractor w/30 amp alternator just to make sure they would stay charged. But I didn't start the tractor until about 2 hours in. I was surprised at how well this system worked, since we haven't had a lot of sun here in the North East. Something to consider w/o busting the bank. Keep in mind this is just a temp strom deal. The super-special-stupidity of transmitting windmill voltage from Whereverville, Great Plains, USA, to the industrial northeast, with a ...what? ... 50% power loss. 60%? Some insanely wasteful percentage anyway. I thought it was going to be transmitted by special superconducting unicorns. Posted by: chemjeff at February 15, 2009 11:27 PM (R0A/J) 88
hutch well thanx for the tip but i was thinking more along the lines of what the morons-in-chief were thinking of when they set about to spend huge bucks design the "smart electricity grid".

brisbane is just inland from the gold coast. Imagine a fancy version
of AoS lifestyle. even non-aussie advertisements make it out to be
real-life baywatch. dont know much about perth, though I have a friend
who studied there for a year. cant get too much reliable info from
her, as she is a sociology prof now with communist sympathies (of the
lefty buddhist naive idealist type). the economist made a list of the
world's most liveable cities and had melbourne as #2 and perth as #4.
Its my understanding that NZ has a strict immigration policy. So no fatties. no hobos. While I have no fondness for tree-humpers, I do like scenic land. Dont know if they are overrun with them. Yeah sydney is a no-go. sydney is a cleaner version of frisco. according to the theories of evolution and continental drift, the two were originally one, but drifted apart over millions of years. the separation and lack of "intermingling" created two distinct, yet still quite similar, species of city. Holy crapping crap! Even Krugman had a lucid moment about this shit! No, he didn't. He did a painful BBCA interview (is there another kind?) in which his fundamental points were: * The stimulus is far too small. It needs to commit a full 50% more into the Democrat Payback, Slush Fund, and Electioneering Bill of 2009. * Prince Barry should listen to Krugman and not allow his kind and conciliatory nature to be abused by unprincipled, evil Republicans. * Republicans are apparently still committed to "voodoo economics" like the Bush tax cuts, which produced five of the stronger economic years in this nation's history. By voodoo. Which is bad and evil. Command and control economies, on the other hand, have a proven track record of success. Or they will as soon as they get their first success. Which should be us. * Tax cuts are bad because those damned taxpayers might do the unpatriotic thing and pay down their debts or even *gasp* put the money in the bank for a rainy day, but dumping tens of billions of dollars into the pockets of unions and in the creation of make-work bullshit jobs is real stimulus. After all, paying a guy to fix a school's leaky roof (no, really, this is the example he used --because there is apparently now an epidemic of schools that are in imminent danger!!!!1111 of collapsing and killing everyone inside) is more productive than actually clearing debt or freeing up lending capital. And since that new "job" will be filled with a union employee, he's guaranteed to still be fixing that roof long after he's dead and his wife is enjoying his lifetime pension and healthcare benefits. Don't ever give that hyper-partisan pretend economist an ounce of credit. Anyone who still cites Keynes without the intention of mockery is a committed idiot. I just remember Thulsa Doom touting the 3k miles as something
spectacular. As if it were some great national project that would lead
us all to emptiness
err.. prosperity. He must be planning on divinely inspiring C60 into
mass-production. Perhaps what scientists have been missing as a
catalyst is the element unicornium.
/sarc off Now that I think about it, that sounds like a Pelosi-T. Boones' wallet stimulus plan. Steel isn't strong, boy, flesh is stronger! Look around you. There, on the rocks; a beautiful girl. As bad as our new leader's trade policy is, let's not go crazy praising the Chinese. I realize a lot of those comments are exaggeration/sarcasm, but let's be careful. There's no form of trade manipulation or government intervention in business that the Chinese don't go in for. Let's not forget that they actively subsidize exports, and do all they can to minimize domestic efficiency in order to maximize employment numbers. They both inflate their exports and protect their domestic industry through currency manipulation of the grossest kind. If you think those are bad things, quit talking about what great free marketeers they are.

They both inflate their exports and protect their domestic industry through currency manipulation of the grossest kind. If you think those are bad things, quit talking about what great free marketeers they are. Many freemarket types say that starting and running a business in China is much easier than it is in the States. Their currency manipulation has seen them buying huge amounts of United States Debt. Course I am not so happy about that since it enabled a lot of idiocy. Posted by: Pierre Legrand at February 16, 2009 08:26 AM (DLJPO) 103
Good point Reactionary ...
China will use "capitalism" to achieve their ends, by soaking up our capitalist wealth, and pulling in capitalist investment, and stealing technology that emanates from free thinking capitalists. But they will also nationalize anything they want when that scenario fits their goals, and do all those devious things you mention. Cramer has sounded big on China, but he has clarified that he is not big on China stocks, but on their economic engine which may help propel some stocks like CAT and FCX. (though he does recommend FXI) China may fear peasant uprisings, but I'm not clear what they would properly be called now. Faux capitalist skin with a ruthless steel skeleton, like the terminator? Many seem to assume they will be the premiere economic power in three to twenty years ... but I tend to think that only happens for countries that allow more real capitalism, and less heavy handed government. But with free markets taking it on the chin lately, and knees buckling, it is hard to discern if perhaps we really are the last great hope for freedom. Hopefully the 2010 election will display a rebuke of the big socialist/Marxist swing ... or maybe there will be more chaos ... Posted by: bill at February 16, 2009 08:35 AM (yXtKX) 104
"History and economics have told us, facing a global financial crisis, trade protectionism is not a solution, but a poison to the solution," the editorial said. Jesus, the Chinese are giving us lectures about protectionism? The entire fucking Chinese economy is built on protectionism! "Do as we say, not as we do." Maybe the chinks are liberals after all. Posted by: flenser at February 16, 2009 08:53 AM (QH777) 105
Many freemarket types say that starting and running a business in China is much easier than it is in the States.
Translation - it's easier to buy political favors in China without getting into trouble with the law. Freemarket types, my shiny metal ass. Posted by: flenser at February 16, 2009 08:59 AM (QH777) 106
China may fear peasant uprisings, but I'm not clear what they would properly be called now. Faux capitalist skin with a ruthless steel skeleton, like the terminator? I think it's called "fascism". Posted by: flenser at February 16, 2009 09:00 AM (QH777) 107
and speaking of chaos .. it seems team Obama/Ayers and the Alinsky way actually prefer more chaos, to further their ambitions.
The US needs more economic activity, and less dependence on foreign energy, yet the left wants to curtail domestic exploration and rebuke nukes ... nuclear power plants I mean. Why not develop those small nuke plants that would power small towns for decades, or larger nuke plants that could power large cities? Priority so far seems to be to turn power over to unions and ACORN and special interests ... and build up large government for decades to come. With that dead body tied to "capitalism", it will be hard to get the US economic supertanker pulled out of the shallows, even if/when the tide comes back in. yes, I'm mixing my metaphors Posted by: bill at February 16, 2009 09:03 AM (yXtKX) 108
#106 I think it's called "fascism".
That sounds right ... probably no reason to attribute more nuance to it than that. All the "free market" capitalism talk is mere propaganda, though they are pulling capitalists into their web. Posted by: bill at February 16, 2009 09:27 AM (yXtKX) 109
Many seem to assume they will be the premiere economic power in three to twenty years ... but I tend to think that only happens for countries that allow more real capitalism, and less heavy handed government.
There is not a whole lot of evidence to support that theory. I know that a lot of people want to believe it, so thay can have their cake and eat it so. Or profit off tradng with China while telling themselves that by doing so they are advancing the cause of freedom. Hitlers Germany is a good analogy here. Not remotely free, but the formost technological power of its day.
Posted by: flenser at February 16, 2009 11:11 AM (QH777) 110
Maybe I'm just using the US as my only data point, but the more free western world has certainly been more successful, as I see it.
Hitler's Germany didn't last long, and I don't know all the keys to their success, or if they were not remotely free. I don't have wide historical scope, but it seems they spent their resources in a way that would not endure. Of course maybe if they had won the war, we wouldn't be free to argue the point. But there is certainly no guarantee that freedom and a fairly governed style of capitalism will prevail, even if it is the best system. Posted by: bill at February 16, 2009 11:58 AM (yXtKX) 111
Bill @ 107P: "Priority so far seems to be to turn power over to unions and ACORN"
