"I Love You, Barack," and the Guardian Shows Its Love, Too

Watch the woman off to the left.

Speaking of "I love you, Barack...."

The left-wing Guardian is endorsing a defense claim that gets Barack Obama off the hook for endorsing torture-renditions. See, the thing is, the eeeevil military is keeping torture evidence secret from him.

US defence officials are preventing Barack Obama from seeing evidence that a former British resident held in Guantلnamo Bay has been tortured, the prisoner's lawyer said last night, as campaigners and the Foreign Office prepared for the man's release in as little as a week.

Clive Stafford Smith, the director of the legal charity Reprieve, which represents Ethiopian-born Binyam Mohamed, sent Obama evidence of what he called "truly mediaeval" abuse but substantial parts were blanked out so the president could not read it.

In the letter to the president [PDF] , Stafford Smith urges him to order the disclosure of the evidence.

Stafford Smith tells Obama he should be aware of the "bizarre reality" of the situation. "You, as commander in chief, are being denied access to material that would help prove that crimes have been committed by US personnel. This decision is being made by the very people who you command."

It is understood US defence officials might have censored the evidence to protect the president from criminal liability or political embarrassment.

"It is understood"? It is? What kind of passive-voice nonsense is that? Who understands this?

I note that I never heard "It is understood" that the military might hide evidence of torture from the President when Bush was in charge.

I guess I'll take it, though. If we can have four years of sweet, sweet torture with the left engaging in apologism for it and giving The Torturous One a pass, I guess I can't complain.

9 It's incapable of being understood....as it can't happen unless the President wants it to. There isn't any way a person in the defense department can keep something from the Commander in Chief, legally, if the President asks for it.

15 It never occurs to the intrepid Guardian reporter that the reason the document had blacked out areas was because it was obtained by this Clive Stafford Smith guy, not by the president? Do they really think that the president gets documents on items he's in charge of with information "censored"? Then again, the Guardian editors probably know this, and also know that the majority of their readership is so ignorant of the United States that they probably think our western states are still under the threat of massacres by "red indians."

17 Remember Julio at the Unicorn of Change Rally in Fort Myers, Florida? He is the 52%. He is why we will never emerge from this mire. He is the majority, and our culture is breeding more of him every day.

The rest of the 52% may not have the inebriated slurred speech, the blustery unrequited adolescent testosterone of a Julio, but they are the same to the core. Consider what he not just said, but demanded of President Waffles. He said he's a student, who has worked at a fast food joint for the last four years. This issue of why he is still getting bottom dollar at a McDonalds after that much service is not even something to address. The issue of Julio being a "communications major" yet being barely able to form a coherent sentence is unaddressed. The issue of his petulant, covetous attitude and tone is unaddressed. These things are too... shall we say, nuanced to be an issue.

The only issue Our Dear Leader addressed was Julio's demand for more goodies. Julio demanded some "plan" for the rest of us to give him more benefits, even though he is at the bottom of the ladder in a drive-through burger shack, behaves in a surly manner, and can't seem to even communicate in clear English.

He is our future. The basis of our problem is not political, it is existential and cultural. Politics cannot solve this problem. The milieu responsible for raising such people in this republic can only change over long periods of time, and the change has to come from the marrow of this culture. Until the leukemia of collectivism, hysteria and entitlement is eradicated from the bones of our society, nothing will change.

Julio has been raised in an atmosphere where every ill, imagined or real, has been blamed on the inaction of government. Expensive education? Government didn't do enough. Dirty water or air? Government didn't do enough. Gas prices too high? Government didn't do enough. Houses too expensive? Government didn't do enough. Houses losing value? Government didn't do enough. Too many children in poor families? Government didn't do enough. Too few free medical procedures like abortion or cardiac surgery or orthodonty or chemotherapy? Government didn't do enough.

What Julio was never taught was that government is the societally approved means of forcing some people to do what other people want, at the point of a gun. Literally. Otherwise, laws would be meaningless. Unless backed by physical coercion, what is a law other than a wish? The gun doesn't have to be made of steel and brass; it can be in the form of confiscation of your bank account or property or rights... or printing money. When you or I do it, it's a felony called counterfeiting. When the government does it, it's called open market operations. It's all coercion, theft or fraud in one form or another.

This is not excessively philosophical or theoretical. Let's face it... if Julio could have spoken without deceit, what he really asked Barry Lord Rainbowshanks was: "I go to school and have a minimum wage job. When are you gonna steal someone else's property and give it to me?" Is there anything disputable about that assertion? He wants government to take stuff from someone else and give it to him. He is a thief, plain and simple, but without the balls to go and commit the theft himself.

You may or may not think it is a good thing to steal from some people and give their property to others, or keep it for yourself. That is not the point here. The point is that Julio is your neighbor. He is the 52%. It's not as if most of the Julios live on one side of the country, and we can put up fences to keep them out as the rest of us secede. Julios are studded all through society like currants in a fruitcake. There is no way for us to rid ourselves of Julios, because they were baked in the oven of our culture, which burns in every state, every city, every place in the Nation Below Canada. Until our culture produces people unlike this leech Julio, this sort of vile citizen will multiply. And they now control the electoral process.

I agree with you about the culture cranking out these zombies. However, the saddest part to me is that, this does not apply to my own children (aged 17 & 1. Obviously, as a conservative I instilled in them the value system necessary. However, I must send them out into this culture that breeds these idiots now. It makes me want to puke, thinking that my kids' hard work, dedication, and achievement are now going to be a part of the overall lowering of standards in order to raise up the Julios and Henrietas and general 52%'ers...

George:

The redestributors always believe they are acting justly ("tax cuts for the rich"), after all, it isn't their money, earned by honest labor (surely).

I am less pessimistic than you about the future. We have basically raised a generation post-Reagan who have known nothing but prosperity (albeit with a couple minor hiccups). They don't know what punitive taxation looks like. They don't know what the hard hand od statism feels like. They are inexperienced.

The Lightworker is a siren singer. However, he is also deluded by his own self image.

The failure of his Change will pull scales off of a lot of eyes. When the burdens start to fall, as they must, those who drank the kool-aid will wizen. Mugged by reality.

Also the fact he is an inexperienced wimp will get the low information voters who bought the centrist/pragmatist bullshit to pull away from him the same way their parents pulled away from Carter.

I agree that, under normal circumstances, the merely misguided and white-guilters could be brought back into reality.  But are these normal circumstances?

Media is now Pravda and Messiah cheering section ("We're All Socialists Now" etc.).  It's a pretty steep climb, under these circumstances, i.e., everything bad that happens is GWB's fault, GOP obstructionists, blah - and everything good is the result of Dear Leader.  When 99% of the media spins things this way, the sheeple are going to be slow to turn...

Plus, where's our leadership?  We have no party, no charismatic leader.

I hate to be a pessimist too, but at the moment it appears we're totally screwed.  Something's gotta change, fast.

If Steele were smart, he'd very loudly and publicly drub the RINO's out of the party. I bet contributions would pick up dramatically.

However, so many of you get it, maybe there is a hope that a large swath of the citizens in the Nation Below Canada will be able to tell our cultural elites to shut the fuck up. Maybe we can get our families and trusted friends to just plain ignore the dominant culture and think for ourselves. This is a total, if metaphorical, war against a culture that wants to turn the common man into an infantile mammal, whining and waiting for a teat to be shoved into its mouth. In the animal kingdom, most infants die as prey to other animals or from starvation due to scarcity.

Note that liberty is the exception rather than the rule in human history.

I sincerely hope you're right.  What scares the crap out of me is the unchecked media, though.  I'm sure the founders did not envision the potential perfect storm of a president with a cult following, dumbed-down masses, and a propagandist media invested in the success of an administration.  Go ahead, throw in a few more ingredients if you want - but they're probably unnecessary.

IOW, become Europe. All the while, viscerally hating those that protect you and those that finance your no worries lifestyle. Must be projection.

I keep thinking that Europe has hung on so long primarily because the Nation Below Canada has been the locomotive pulling the world economy in train. For decades, the motive power of other economies has been slacking off, leaving more and more of the work to us. Japan subsisted through its lost decade selling to the West. Even places like China grew mainly because we provided a huge market for their products. But we provide the innovation, the place for capital investment, the political safety.

However now, if our economy becomes a caboose instead of the only working engine... what happens to the whole train?

She's from Germany and believes every word this guy says. All for socialized medicine, yada, yada. Cost me the relationship. Gonna end up costing her young kids more. Bet she still can't see that. And yes, I'm better off.
