| Democrats, Then and NowPresident Franklin D. Roosevelt: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." President Barack H. Obama: 'Do what I want, or the economy will melt, and you'll all die poor and alone.' Irresponsible fear-mongering is not all that presidential. Now that I think about it, weren't we promised a calm, cool, post-partisan president? Guess that 'hope over fear' stuff was "just words." Although I'm not a big fan of FDR, the man knew that part of leadership was preventing panic. In 1933, during one of his "fireside chats," FDR said the following:After all there is an element in the readjustment of our financial system more important than currency, more important than gold, and that is the confidence of the people. Confidence and courage are the essentials of success in carrying out our plan. You people must have faith; you must not be stampeded by rumors or guesses. Let us unite in banishing fear. We have provided the machinery to restore our financial system; it is up to you to support and make it work. It is your problem no less than it is mine. Together we cannot fail.Roosevelt knew panic would only make the problem worse, so while he was honest about the state of the economy, he deliberately tempered his rhetoric. Compare that to Obama's words from last night: They can't pay their bills. They've stopped spending money. And because they've stopped spending money, more businesses have been forced to lay off more workers. In fact, local TV stations have started running public service announcements to tell people where to find food banks, even as the food banks don't have enough to meet the demand. As we speak, similar scenes are playing out in cities and towns across America. Last Monday, more than 1,000 men and women stood in line for 35 firefighter jobs in Miami [Florida]. Last month, our economy lost 598,000 jobs, which is nearly the equivalent of losing every single job in the state of Maine. And if there's anyone out there who still doesn't believe this constitutes a full-blown crisis, I suggest speaking to one of the millions of Americans whose lives have been turned upside-down because they don't know where their next paycheck is coming from.HOLY CRAP GRAB THE GUNS AND START STUFFING MATTRESSES WITH MONEY AND STOCK UP ON CANNED FOODS!!!!!!!!!!! The contrast couldn't be clearer. Roosevelt was deliberate in his attempts to calm. Obama is deliberate in his attempts to induce panic. In many ways, he's like Syndrome from "The Incredibles." *Spoilers for those who haven't seen the movie.* The villain deliberately creates a giant machine designed to attack a city and create panic so he can swoop in to play the part of the hero. He's designed the machine to respond to his commands, so he can 'destroy' it. Unfortunately for him (and the city) his plan goes awry and he can't control the destructive monster he unleashed. I didn't say it was a comforting metaphor. What we've seen over the past few weeks is that Obama's definition of 'hope' is 'not-Bush.' That may have been enough to get him through an election, but it's a poor substitute for the real thing. Comments1

Obama may place U.S. Under International Court Obviously, this story is biased in its views about torture, etc., but the govt wants American people to get used to the idea of a world court. Whether or not it will happen under his admin remains to be seen, but if Americans don't see how our country has been dissolved by now without our say so by now-"We the People"-I doubt if they ever will. Obama may place U.S. Under International Court This is a really, really scary development. Not surprising but very bad. The idea that American citizens would be subjected to a "world court" with authority beyond constitutional rights is the very essence of one world government. Almost as bad are the stealth health care provisions stuck into this bailout disaster.

Whether or not Obama is trying to "induce panic" (I think he definitely isn't, but that's not an argument I'm going to win in this forum), this is a pretty lousy connection here. Bush's entire presidency was based on the inducement of fear so that many of his policies would be seen as necesscities and not simply goals. Blue Dog nips Obama with a better stimulus idea
By Examiner Editorial Minnick is a member of the Blue Dog caucus of occasionally conservative Democcrats. His START plan is a $170 billion “bare bones” pure stimulus approach that would put $100 billion immediately into the pockets of low- and middle-income Americans, then use the other $70 billion for basic infrastructure projects that create jobs. START requires that all funds not spent by 2010 be returned to the Treasury. START also stops stimulus spending when the nation’s Gross Domestic Product increases in two of three previous quarters, and all START payments are required to be posted on a public website. Minnick introduced START as an alternative – just in case the legislative process stalls out, says press secretary John Foster. As one of the brave 11 Democrats who voted against Pelosi’s stimulus bill, Minnick explained to folks back home that he opposed the speaker’s version because it was so “Christmas-treed up” with wasteful spending, like $300 million for golf carts. Foster told The Examiner that the House leadership encourages members to do what’s best for their districts, so there has been no backlash. We’ll see how long that lasts. Recent
CBS and Rasmussen polls found that the public is becoming less

Big difference, Kilgore, is that the likely results of rushing to "stimulus" per BO, is the results historically have been conclusive in that it only prolongs the corrections by the market. In fact, it makes things worse - check CBO's recent conclusion that long-term it's a detriment. On the other hand, "rushing" (over the course of what, 18 months) to cleanse Iraq by President Bush is also the kind of thing with historically validated results. Stand around and do nothing while someone threatens you, and smacks you in the head, only invites more. Smacking them with enough force to remove their head keeps them from doing it again. Rush to stimulus = epic historically proven fail. "Rush" to kill bad guys = epic historically proven necessary.
Let's take the long 18-month type rush for the stimulus we took for invading Iraq. If BO can make the case such that Congress and the public approves of it after than much scrutiny to the same level both such entities supported invasion of Iraq, well, then and only then should we consider enacting it. Many economists are predicting a recovery anyway in the next couple years. Barry wants to pass the "stimahlus" bill so he can claim credit for the recovery after the "tragedy" of the Republican era, though we all know the bill wont do crap in the area of stimulus in the short-term. This mess is a consequence of poor monetary policy since the mid-90's. The only way to really fix it is through growth to soak up the money glut. It can be hidden away in certain plans (e.g. bad bank, tarp). Regulations need to be reworked and oversight improved so it doesnt happen again.

Vic,
to give an example, Larry Kudlow was going over all the "mustard seeds", as he calls them, last night. Monetary issues have stabilized, dry bulk shipping up, et al. are all leading indicators; I recall them listing over a half dozen. Unemployment numbers tend to be lagging, though if there are systemic problems, they can lead to a downward spiral. Our systemic problems reside more on the monetary side. Just because they average 8 months since WW2, doesnt mean it will. First, this isnt a "garden variety recession" as it is a monetary mess, not one that arose over supply-demand/business cycle stuff. 2nd, it is a meaningless average as the data points are few and the spacing is considerable. And each one has had different policies thrown at it, so that adds new variables into duration. Its like saying california is due for a new "big one" as the average is about 135 years, though its not mentioned the spacing of known major quakes has ranged from about 90-250, with the spacing of occurrances leaning towards one extreme or the other. Same thing happens with the yellowstone supervolcano. Lastly, using WW2 is somewhat arbitrary, as we didnt have our current monetary system (totally off the gold standard) until Nixon, though I recall it being soon after WW2 that the US dollar essentially became the world currency. I hear ya! I personally don't know a single person who has lost their house or is struggling. I've heard of some being laid off, but I don't personally know of one person in dire strates. I live in Indiana, and it's pretty much business as usual around here.

Obama is more like syndrome than just one example. He's a talentless wannabe who has ridden on coattails and now through cleverness has come up with a way to seem super when he's not and seeks the adulation of the public to destroy his enemies.

"panicker-in-chief - I like the sound of that."
In my other blogpost, I nicknamed him "Scold-in-Chief". Both titles serve this rash, unprepared young man who totally lacks the silky smooth demeanour of that other rash, unprepared young man (JFK), well. Kennedy was saved by his ability to charm others, not to mention his hard-bitten service during WWII, which went a long way to repair his lack of self-esteem compared to his elder brother. He was always striving to outdo him, and consequently bettered himself in the process. In Obama's case, he had one much younger sister, with absolutely no one to measure himself against in the whole of his life -- until he met Michelle. This man has coasted on the fumes of some presumed future glory since he was born. Even his adult work experience doesn't help. He's acting right now precisely like an academic, who once his considerable intellect (he believes) has reached a conclusion about a topic, expects others to give him props for thesis brilliance. That's not how real life works. He is way way in over his head, and we're all along for the ride. Finally, thanks to Slublog for linking to my post (the 4th link at top)! Cheers, Victoria Posted by: Victoria at February 10, 2009 03:12 PM (3Wp2w) 85
#17 - And giving $4.1B to ACORN helps how? It helps him and his minions stay in power. $4.1 B can buy a whole bunch of cigarettes, which ACORN will then use to bribe "voters"... and they'll probably still have a couple of bucks left over to line their pockets. You will not die alone. Obama will be right there, robbing your corpse. Being left alone is looking good to me.
