Health care rationing for elderly slipped into stimulus

Note to democrats: four years from now, boomers=="seniors"

...If the Obama administration’s economic stimulus bill passes the Senate in its current form, seniors in the U.S. will face similar rationing. Defenders of the system say that individuals benefit in younger years and sacrifice later...
Of course, everyone looks forward to a debilitating, painful, (and soon to be impoverished,) old age so this is sure to be a real vote getter in the future.

9 They should have thought about the Social Security and Medicare obligations before starting this bailout and stimulus crap.

Soon, there literally will be no way out to cover the interest on our debt besides devaluing our currency which will cause an international monetary collapse. Trade will stop.

The clock is running backwards now - and accelerating.

AARP isn't about seniors, its all about AARP as a business that benefits its executives and staff. Any benefit for seniors is strictly accidental.

Dumbasses keep sending life insurance offers every month for my mom who died back in June and I've told them repeatedly that she's dead, but the offers keep coming. One of these days I swear I'm going to take them up on their offer to insure the life of a dead woman.

Try and pick up a life insurance policy and then immediately produce the death certificate and try to collect.

It's basic economics: If something is free, eventually, somehow, it has to be rationed. Living in Canada, I accept it as part of the healthcare system here. It's rationed insofar as I have to wait an extra day or so to get a doctor's appointment for something routine.

In college I went to a presentation by former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop. The money quote was when he said, "Americans want their health care high-tech, fast, and cheap. You can have any two of those, but not all three."

They didn't expect so many of the Depression/World War II generation to live so long either. The 2000 census noted that there are now a significant number of two-generation households consisting of 70-year-olds taking care of parents in their 90s.

It should also be added that the customary retirement age of 65 dates from Bismarck's Germany. The Hohenzollerns! It was chosen not to be comfortable, but because it exceeded the life expectancy of the time, so over half the population died by then.

That needs to be bumped upward.

40 The way out of this is the creation of hard currency, and a structurally sound economy based on a sound and reasonable scheme of taxation that provides enough money for a government to manage its proper affairs, and for economic freedom at a sufficient level to generate growth and prosperity. The accumulation of wealth and capital in the United States is not a bad thing when it is done in actual terms. The growth of the American economy is only a threat to the world when the growth is fraudulent and financed by an ever-increasing pool of fraudulent debt instruments known as the federal reserve note.

Alana re: message 6 Why?

Side bar. As I watched the premium of my $5000 deductible policy rise from $33 a month 25 years ago to its present $1000 per month, the one upside of getting older was in a few years medicarewould be available. Don't worry, I've paid plenty for my healthcare and for the healthcare of others. When I dissolved my tiny 2 man corporation the State of Ohio kept tens of thousands of $'s from the workmans comp. premiums I paid into and never once made a claim on. I'm lucky, in spite of it being difficult to plan for retirement when the dollar I earned at 20 is worth 10 or 15% of its original value at retirement age, I'm okay. So you guys bitching about old people not paying for their healthcare can fuck off.

You gotta love the Social Security premium that was originally only a few percent on the first few thousand of earnings has gone to 14% of the first $100,000. They want to raise the upper limit to any and all wage levels and then means test it because those who paid the most, obviously, don't need the money. Its my fucking money, whether I need it or not. They started this ponzi scheme. Its theft plain and simple, only the hard working and even rich people don't have sufficient numbers to grab a pitchfork and clean the Bullshit out of the halls of congress.

As the assholes who won't let even a percent or two of Social Security be invested in the stock market, they are trying to find a way to socialize you 401's and IRA's. Thank you 52%. Oh sorry I meant to say fuck you 52%

51 They will not stop, they will not be complacent with the damage they manage to do until this country is a smoking crater. Only then will they sit back and smile, because then the United States will have been reduced to ashes by their hand but they will say it was Bush's fault so they can complain about that, too. These liberals are not happy unless they're miserable, and unless everyone else is miserable like them. They look not for solutions that uplift, but problems that will prolong the problems they can create more problems for.

After all, should the problem be solved, there would cease to exist the modern liberal.

I had sent the state of NJ a copy of his death certificate within six months of his passing so they would know they weren't getting any more money. Now I just give whoever the address of the cemetery and use his plot # as his Unit # and give them the cemetery's phone #. Works until they sell the debt to someone else.

55 I should also add I read an article a few weeks ago about a couple that kept getting harassing phone calls about their adult son's unpaid credit cards and other debts. He died about a year previous.

We were getting calls first from a hospital, then a collection agency every day, sometimes twice a day, for 6 months, looking to collect on medical bills accrued by some guy we'd never heard of. Every time, we'd tell them they had the wrong number and address. Every time, they'd say they'd removed the information from the system. We even went to the hospital and the collection agency. It took us meeting the presidents of each TWICE, in person, once with the deeds to the freaking house, to get it to stop.

Their excuse was "well, maybe that person lived in the house before you did".

We'd lived there for 16 years and were the first owners of the property after it was sectioned off from a bean field to create the subdivision we lived in (and my parents still live in).

It's shit like that, and the constant computer database entry and merge fubars I've encountered personally and hear about from my friends that deal with such things that scare me about this electronic tracking database. All we need is to have our personal information merged with random pedo #2453453, or some dude with AIDS, or even worse your records get wiped in a merge and they lose the list of meds you're allergect to, to fuck up our medical treatment. At least with physical records you can go "That never happened" they look at the records and see someone else's name on that sheet. With e-records it all just goes into your name, or someone else's, when they mess up. And that's not even mentioning the potential for abuse a-la Joe the Plumber.

58 I concur with Dan re: social security. It infuriates me that I will never see that 12.8% of my income ever again (I'm 26). Do you have any idea how much good I could do with that money? And even if I wanted to have a bonfire with it, it's MY fucking money. That should be my call, not theirs.

You know what I think the problem is? I think lefties assume that the rest of us give as little to charity as they do, and that's why they insist on government-funded charity. Last year, I was making very little money, I had to buy a new pair of hearing aids ($4400, no help from insurance), and I bought my first house. I still gave more money to charity in that one year than Joe Biden and his wife have given in the last ten years. And I don't mean slightly more. I mean 50% more.

Don't assume you understand what will be eventually classified as "senior citizen" when the government has a monopoly on health care. My father got a cancer diagnoses when he was 57. His doctor was raised and trained in the Netherlands - a county known to be a cutting edge, "progressive" society. She told him that he was "too old" to justify spending the money needed to treat him. We were stunned and heartbroken. and spent a night as a family, cloistered together, deciding how to face our future. Fortunately for us, we were free Americans and rallied to give her a collective middle finger and moved along to a new doc. What would it have been like if we had nowhere to run but another government doc?

I will never, ever understand people who want and trust government control of their lives. These people are do NOT deserved the title of "liberal." They are leftist fundamentalists and quite dangerous to freeborn citizens.

Reminds me of that awful scenario they always forced on us in ethics classes: You are on the medical review board and can only provide surgery for one patient:

1. The 35 year old mother of three, known for her international humanitarian efforts and saving puppies.
2. The 45 year old single man with AIDs, currently living in a federal penitentiary.
3. The 60 year old chain smoking US Senator, who has CPD.

We all know the 35 year old better start getting her affairs in order.

This should not surprise anybody. I've been yapping about this for about 20 years to my kids and anyone else who would listen to me. This is how Canada and Britain handle their nationalized health care, people! Doesn't anybody pay attention anymore? Or are Michael Moore and Oprah your only sources of information?

The elderly are the first to go. You have out-lived your usefulness. You no longer contribute to society and are a drain on the resources of your country. God does not exist. We are no longer made in his image. There is no sanctity of life. Life is dealt with in a triage mindset.

I got about 1/3 of the way through the Senate bill before my eyes glazed over and I lapsed into a coma. Even ignoring all the "small stuff" (under $1B) its big enough to stop the replicators in their tracks and make them flee the Milky Way galaxy in horror.

Posted by: Purple Avenger at February 10, 2009 10:29 AM (Ygf78)

86 Dan @50 - well, I was refusing to believe it because maybe this really just meant doing heart transplants on 85-year-olds or something, and wouldn't really restrict more common, necessary care for older people.

I was also thinking that even if it did, it would apply only to those on government insurance (assuming there were still a thing as affordable private insurance), and even if not, you could still pay for the whole thing to get treatment on your own (and hopefully that wouldn't be too much).

Would that be true?

But after reading the rest of the comments - how it's done in the Netherlands, Canada, and Britain - I guess maybe I should believe it. Especially the Netherlands story.

That would explain some of the talk I've heard from younger people lately (20's and 30's) about how health care shouldn't be wasted on people who are close to death's door anyway (which they seem to think is around 60), and that they use up too much health care anyway.

I tried to point out that that is because young people are healthier, and don't need as much, and they will need more as they get older, but that didn't seem to concern them overly. I guess 60 looks a long ways off to them, like a whole other life. And probably they figure life won't worth living then anyhow. Or think they will magically maintain their youthful health forever. Or SOMETHING.

Alana,

I appreciate your honest response. It sounds like your eyes have been opened a little. In the 90's I was active in the tax movement and in opposing national (Hillary) healthcare. The same stories were getting out then. I personally know of a little girl with a double lung transplant that had exceeded her families health insurance premiums. She was a pretty, sweet delicate child. She was doomed to die. Her parents went to the government for aid and were told they were too wealthy. The father (a successful computer programmer) sold their home and cars bought a junker station wagon, moved into an apartment and used the proceeds to pay for medical needs. So far this is in accordance with my Libertarian leanings. I see no reason to go to other citizens for their money until you have exausted you own resources. Then he quallified for help from Medicaid. The people in charge of his case took care of the bills for a while and then his wife had the "misfortune" of getting pregnant. He and his wife were brought before them and informed due to their economic status they couldn't afford another child (He was paying the rent, food bills ect.) and recommended his wife get an abortion. He told them No, Hell No and walked away. His church, family and friends helped and their daughter died about 4 years later.

The stories are real. Don't trust government. Our founding fathers didn't.

Emphasising Links of London’s strength of designing watches as jewellery, this watch features a black mother of pearl dial with a 18ct rose gold plated stainless steel case and bracelet. We've created a watchlinks of london sweetie bracelets that will appeal to those looking for a fun modern design suitable for everyday use but in the fashionable rose gold.
