Cloture Vote: 61-36

A "lean" bill, Ben Nelson pronounces.

The result is known-- except for how many squishes go along with this boondoggle.

By the Way: It's even more expensive now. It's up to $829 billion, ten billion more than the House bill it was "slimmed down" from.

Squish Bellwether? I haven't heard all the names and I'm not familiar with who's who among the freshmen senators, but the Republican senators I recognize are voting no. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, for example, is plainly a squish, but she voted no.

61-36. Final vote is 61-36. Not sure if we lost yet another squish yet or if Ted Kennedy cast that 61st. Three senators didn't vote -- I guess Gregg (abstaining), the undetermined senator from Minnesota, and one more. If it was Kennedy who was absent, we lost another one. If Kennedy voted, someone else abstained.

Another possibility is that someone like Mitch McConnell voted "aye," just to preserve some or other procedural right to ask to reconsider or that kind of thing. That happens a lot, and may have happened here.

4 KB Hutchinson did the same thing with the comprehensive piece of shit.  She wouldn't commit one way or the other until it was known whether her vote would make a difference.  When it was obvious it wouldn't pass, she voted against it.  Makes me sick that she's 'representing' my state.

7 It's never too late to stop it or have a major impact on the bill, and a very effective way to do that is at my name's link. I've posted dozens of pleas like that before, and nothing ever happens, and I posted a variation of the latest plea to FreeRepublic and no one was roused enough to do anything.

The bottom line is that BHO and his allies are willing to get off their couches and do something. His opponents aren't. Think of it as Darwinism in action.

21 836 Billion Dollars, that includes provisions for - amongst other things - the socialization of American medicine by creating a central data base that doctors will be required to utilize, one that will allow eventually for the rationing of healthcare, particularly for our senior citizens, (as Rush discussed today)... can now be called "lean" with a straight face.

THINK about that - a centralized federally-controlled medical data base that will be kept "private," except (of course) when data is "accidentally" released about people like Joe the Plumber and Michael Steele. No, no privacy concerns there, huh, YOU FUCKING LIBERAL ASSHOLES. A naitonal ID card would be a menace, but THIS... why, this is not ever worth a bill of its own, but rather must be snuck into this gigantic glob of a liberal's wet dream.

39 So we started with $1.2 trillion deficit, are going to add $830 billion if not more, have at least another $1 trillion coming in a few days with TARP II, which a deficit of 22% of GDP (which is more than 7 years of Bush deficits).  That's not to include next years deficit of at least $800 billion and over $1 trillion in extra interest.  To top it all off by the end of Obama's first term the baby boomers will be retiring en masse sending the large SS surpluses into deficits.  But hey, Bush was bad and the media tells us we hate him, it's all worth it to show him.

Maybe I'm not reading it right, but is the wording on the bill unbelievably vague?

Example:  I'll walk you through some steps to look at a NASA item.  I don't know how to get permalinks from the loc.gov link.

1) go to http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:H.R.+1:
2) Click on the #5 bill (the current one)
3) Search for the link titled "National Aeronautics and Space Administration".  Click it.
4) Read the text for NASA.  It is all of about 5 sentences, like: "For an additional amount for `Science', $450,000,000, to remain available until September 30, 2010."

Is this really as specific as the bill is?  Funding for "science" in quotes?  In other words does NASA have absolute freedom to spend this 450 million however they want as long as it is for "science"?

Just to be clear, this type of bill seems like a lobbyist's fucking wet dream.

A billion in summer job grants? Community organizers need resources to organize and energize the community. Check.

Billions for state fiscal stabilization? Government worker unions will see their employees secured. States will now become wards of Washington and further erode federalism. Centralization of power. Check. Check.

Deficits so high we can't but raise taxes just to meet debt service? Hide class warfare in the name of necessity. Check.

Any Republican who votes for this needs to be shown the door. Senators, why not just admit you are a Kos Kool-Aid drinker.

81 In case anyone wants to actually do something, I posted a very effective way to block the bill in #7 above. I really don't know why others would post impassioned appeals to block the bill here, since it looks like everyone agrees that it should be blocked. What's needed now is action. Unfortunately, I can't do everything myself. So, someone has to step forward to actually start organizing an effort to get someone to embarrass a supporter on video over the bill. A very good video - featuring a well-known bill supporter being "cross-examined" over the bill - would get hundreds of thousands or millions of views. Please spend your time on developing a plan to get that video. In order to do that, we need a large number of people to get out there with video cameras and with good questions. That means we need major bloggers to urge their readers to get out there. At the very least, contact major bloggers and urge them to support this plan. If you don't like my plan for some reason, then come up with an actual effective alternative plan.

Henceforth they shall be known as the US Chamber of Communists.

88 See, there were things Obama could have done to make this "package" more popular with everyone:

IF you insist on the sort of spending he's talking about, then:

1. Greatly increase DEFENSE spending, on R&D but also production of aircraft & ships, new generation vehicles, etc. All those things:

a) Put money directly in the pockets of white & blue color (unionized) workers.

b) Support the country's industrial base,

c) Actually help make the country more secure

2. If you're ITCHING to put money directly in people's hands, support several hundred billion dollars worth of payroll taxes for middle class folks.

3. The $15,000 tax credit for new homebuyers seems like a good enough idea, Why not make it a $30,000 credit?

It's not like Republicans couldn't suggest ways to spend money. But of course... Barry "won," so he's too arrogant to even consider listening to suggestions.

90 Military leaders might very soon have to start weighing when we have to act on our oath's to protect our Constitution.  Obama has already violated the Constitution with the Census stuff.  How much more before we have to act?  I doubt anyone over the rank of 2 stars will have the stones to act since they are political creatures by that point.  Seriously though, what would be the tripwire that would cause military intervention?
