It’s Official…Dissent Is No Longer Patriotic

Well that didn’t take long.

Mr. Obama called Ms. Collins and Mr. Specter, as well as Senator Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, another Republican expected to support the deal, to acknowledge they were acting against pressure from their party and, one official said, to thank them for their patriotism in helping advance the bill at a critical time.

Apparently not wanting to spend 800 billion to a trillion dollars (no one actually knows) is unpatriotic.

That of course is in contrast to the dark days of say, last year when voting to retreat in the face of the enemy in Iraq was a deeply patriotic act and daring to criticize the advocates of cut and run bordered on fascism.

In other news, we have always been at war with Eurasia.

Why?

Because just about the only people left in those states are people who are bitterly clinging to their unions, gubmint welfare and MSNBC or they are living off their trust funds. They vote the way their union bosses and Corruptocrat party machine ward bosses tell them to.

Just about everyone else has already bailed out of Maine and Pennsylvania and gone to Texas. At least it seems that way judging by all the "foreign" license plates I am seeing here.

39 "Apparently not wanting to spend 800 billion to a trillion dollars (no one actually knows) is unpatriotic."

...For example, the Ministry of Plenty's forecast had estimated the output of boots for the quarter at 145 million pairs. The actual output was given as sixty-two millions. Winston, however, in rewriting the forecast, marked the figure down to fifty-seven millions, so as to allow for the usual claim that the quota had been overfulfilled. In any case, sixty-two millions was no nearer the truth than fiftyseven millions, or than 145 millions. Very likely no boots had been produced at all. Likelier still, nobody knew how many had been produced, much less cared. All one knew was that every quarter astronomical numbers of boots were produced on paper, while perhaps half the population of Oceania went barefoot. And so it was with every class of recorded fact, great or small.

47 This is something out of a cheesy movie.  Obama is the evil emperor thanking the traitors for their duty to the people.  The next scene is their faces in anguish over what they have done.

This is truly a shit sandwich because it achieves nothing.  The CBO says it will make the economy worse, but unless the economy goes gangbusters before 2010, the massive deficits and pork involved here will be easy to run against.

I guess it's inevitable -- what president doesn't get his first legislative priority? -- but the way this was done, with two R votes in the Senate, none in the House and several Dem defections means that this is no victory for Obama.

The Clinton era is repeating itself.  Between Carter and Clinton, we will see nothing new with Obama.  I predict that Obama will not go the Clinton route and make overtures to the right to protect himself.  Obama believes in his own righteousness, Clinton believed in his own survival.

Please vote on this gun issue question with USA Today. It will only take a few seconds of your time. Then pass the link on to all the pro gun folks you know. Hopefully these results will be published later this month. This upcoming year will become critical for gun owners with the Supreme Court accepting the District of Columbia case against the right for individuals to bear arms.
First - vote on this one.
Second - launch it to other folks and have THEM vote - then we will see if the results get published.

The Question is: Does the Second Amendment give individuals the right to bear arms?

56 41 Other than Drew, anyone left who does not believe Barry is a muslim?

I don't think he's a Muslim.  He doesn't have the modesty or the self-discipline.

But I can see why you're confused.  He's a Muslim apologist.  He has a romanticized view of the poor, oppressed Islamic people.  It's much stronger than the view most lefties have because of Obama's daddy issues.  He has a sense of noblesse oblige toward Muslims in particular.

A good analogy is the Communist era.  Communist sympathizers were called "pinkos".  Quite rightly most of them were not genuine Communists, they weren't underground "reds" but they couldn't muster the intellectual and ideological opposition to them and apologized for the less egregious sins of Communist regimes.

Since Muslims identify with the color green, that would make Obama light green.  Say, chartreuse.

Of course, he's a pinko too.  He's very much an apologist for Communists (his father wasn't a practicing Muslim but was a Communist if not in name, then in practice).  So I guess Barry's light purple.  Fuchsia?

If Gregg permits this, he is such a tool.

The intellectual gymnastics you have to do to argue that the Chief of Staff (doesn't he have enough to do?) should run the census instead of the duly appointed and confirmed Secretary of Commerce is astounding.

The insane amount of attention that Obama's administration is putting into this is telling you that they intend to cheat and cheat bigtime.

Think about it -- if you don't get counted in the census, so what?  One Congressional seat here or there.   As far as illegals, they'll get missed in Texas as much as California.

74 To "The Obvious" @ 6: You probably know the person who coined this aphorism was referring to McCarthyism.

It's something of a comfort to watch the Republican party cement itself firmly as the 21st century's version of the No Nothings.

To the extent history is a guide, that's actually good news for true conservatives (as distinct from radical reactionaries): Once the No Nothings of the 19th century fully emerged, their presence on the national stage died out fairly quickly along with their base, and eventually what emerged was split of Democratic-Republican coalition that was formed under Thomas Jefferson into the two party system we had from Woodrow Wilson's first victory through to Barack Obama's first.

It's important to recall that in the intervening period, there were lots of short-lived parties, some derived out of sliver movements (for example: the Progressives, and the Farmer-Labourer coalition), and others out of electoral expediency (for example: the Bull Moose coalition). It stands in credit to the diversity of the American experiment that each of those movements and coalitions endures in some form even unto today, albeit typically as a remnant or an atavism or both.

The problem, as Ace recognized a few threads back (then, having quickly realized he'd stumbled in betraying his Know Nothingness, tried to retreat from), is getting elected at any time through the period of reformation.

Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, for example, has shown a remarkable ability to energize most if not all elements of the Know Nothing base, particularly nativists (symbolized in McCarthy), Christianists (Robertson, Bush II), devolutionists (Nordquist), imperialists (Reagan), and executive unitarians (Nixon, Cheney).

That ability is something that many liberals, progressives, moderates and centrists (all of whom have at least a foot in Obama's coalition today) don't appear to appreciate. The 'Palin base' is not as populous as the 'Obama base', but I would expect the former is (Time and events may prove this out.) far more cohesive in terms of its capacity to re-form again (and again and again) under not just her but others; whereas the latter is far more a function of historical and social vicissitudes, some of which might (and clearly Ace and his Hole Cards are among many others on the right working to make this happen) might actually diverge under his presidency.

The problem with what I'll call here the "Ace Plan" (the effort I just referred to) is that it leaves out two sets of factors:

A) It leaves out several large elements, among them being Progressives and True (as distinct from Movement) Conservatives, and the amorphous Center that may (1932, 1964, 1984, 200 or very much may not (1948, 1960, 1968, 1980, 1988, 2000, 2004) coalesce into being a discernible factor.

Right now Progressives have a powerful big tent vehicle, mostly embodied in the Daily Kos, but also to some lesser extent in blogs at Fire Dog Lake, Talking Points Memo, Salon, the Nation, Mother Jones, and from there a boatload of individual (Hullaballoo, Eschaton, Balloon Juice, Jesus' General etc) and group (Open Left, Democratic Underground, Left Coaster, AntiWar etc) blogs which go to no pretense in their support of the "progressive" policy agenda for governance.

And right now the Progressive blogs are behind Obama. But if you bother to read them, they are watching his every move, because they don't actually trust him to follow up on some of his broad promises. They have their good reasons and evidence: despite the GOP PR effort, he was far from being the most liberal of Senators, and they are simply not able to forgive his vote on telecomm immunity on the FISA Amendment Act of 2008.

The Progressive blogs have their counterparts on the "Right". But those counterparts are split among the various elements of the Movement Conservative Base, very much unlike the unified Progressive blogs.

For decades, the National Review under WF Buckley, and to a lesser extent the Wall Street Journal, provided a means both to reach out to and to gather up True Conservatives. But with the death of WFB and with Murdoch's acquisition of the WSJ, both have ceased being effective in those functions.

Now the TCs are so inadequately served as a factor they have nothing to coalesce around, particularly since the presidency of GW Bush tossed out traditional TC values like incrementalism, long-view fiscal vision and managerial competence. As we know, it got so bad many TCs actually voted for Obama, on the notion that his pre-presidential image was so formlessly based on "hope" that it seemed more likely than the one chosen by the GOP candidate to allow for a return of these values.

The Soft Selfish Center is both the battleground and really seems not worth bothering defining. They're the folks who believe what's written in the local paper and that governance is something that just happens. They were for the Iraq War until they were against it. They're the folks who skew the polls into meaningless pretzels, always overwhelmingly negative on Congress but overwhelmingly positive on their own Congressional representatives; feeling strongly one way or the other about the particular sitting president but often just the opposite on what they understand of his policies.

B) Obama's deep understanding of the "Daddy's Home" image for the American president that starts in the Soft Selfish Center but spills over to some degree into most if not all other elements, plus his abilities in activating it. This guy isn't about instincts: he's about theatrical calculation.

But then, to a lesser degree, so was Bill Clinton. And despite the depth of hatred and despising of him on the Right; despite impeachment, for crying out loud, he left office with huge overall popularity, and with much of his mojo magic intact. The key is: he left office. He didn't stay on after two terms, like FDR did. He had to go, because of the constitutional amendment limiting presidents to 2 terms.

There is no getting around this Obama. He's got everything Bill Clinton had, with none of the negatives and more positives. The Ace Plan seems predicated on the idea that if the Stimulus fails, it can be made into Obama's Failure, and Obama limited to one term, like Carter. That's just silly; it wasn't the Right's ability to project Carter a failure that had him lose to Reagan: he lost on his own failures. FDR inherited the Great Depression, and it was still there when he was re-elected TWICE.

Even were Obama for some reason to die in office, he would be promptly martyred into a positive for the Dems. Look what happened when JFK was assassinated. The only reason LBJ wasn't re-elected in 1968 was that he didn't run due to the war in Viet Nam. As it was, Nixon barely beat Humphrey, no better than the Dems second choice, and with today's demographics Humphrey would have won anyway.

So what's happening now with the Republican party showing itself as the Know Nothing party is particularly perturbing, given that Obama and his gifts and his ability to hold the Soft Selfish Center alive or dead is going to be gone in 2016 regardless, in that it's so short-sighted and self-destructive.

76 That's exactly what this is... a slow motion coup-d'état, with permanent funding of ACORN and rejiggered Congressional districts, only the Democrats will ever hold power in DC. 2010? Are you kidding? With the games Dems are playing with voting (Franken, ACORN, unrestricted credit card donations to Unicorn websites), and the total war the MSM will wage upon Repugs starting late 2009, we will become in practice Mexico. With the PRI (DNC) holding perpetual power. It may be two or three decades before the Democrat Fascist Party crumbles from internal rot or enough people refuse to listen to MSM propaganda and start to think for themselves.

But I doubt it.

86 "Apparently not wanting to spend 800 billion to a trillion dollars (no one actually knows) is unpatriotic."

They have never known what it is.  "It's not based on any particular data point," a Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday. "We just wanted to choose a really large number."

These politicians aren't really running the country, they have no idea what is going on.  They just know how to stall Americans with numbers until word gets around that there are major riots and unrest all around Europe, and the MSM won't tell you about.  This is what the globalists want so they can bring in the (sinister) UN to "take care of things."  It's not going to get better for awhile since the whole idea is to create dissent and stage chaos, so they can disarm us and quietly continue to take away our rights as individuals.

Collins, Specter, & Snowe have been thorns in the R's sides for years; why is anyone surprised by this treachery?

Also, I think Obama uses Communism as a means of grasping power. [He once said that he was a blank slate, all things to all people.] I could be wrong, though; and I'm not sure which is worse.

Posted by: '80sBaby at February 07, 2009 04:24 PM (zmiSr)

101 Pennsylvania will never vote Specter out of office, nor will Maine get rid of Oly Snow. Why?  Because just about the only people left in those states are people who are bitterly clinging to their unions, gubmint welfare and MSNBC or they are living off their trust funds.

I live in one of the collar counties around Philadelphia.  My area used to be as reliably Republican as you could get about 20 years ago.  Now, Republicans are in the minority.  Why?  The demographics have changed dramatically.   White people are fleeing the corrupt embarrassment that is Philly, and people who have had enough are moving out of state.  So the people who abandon Philly move to my area and promptly continue voting for the same idiotic policies that hosed Philly.

I like the comment that Obama does not believe in a power greater than himself Good insight. If the power he needs to be is Christian than he is that. If the power he needs to be be is a Muslim then that is what he is. He is easy to figure out. Obama said the stimulus is a spending bill. Wait just a minute. A spending bill is allocating the amount of money needed to start and finish the job. A stimulus is spending money to begin the job, period, giving  others a boost needed to finish the job. A stimulus is an incentive to encourage others to gamble. I think he probably lumped them together in his desire to control not stimulate. Obama more than likely did not hear his controversial pastor in twenty years at Trinity. He was probably lost in his own thoughts and thinking up eloquent ways to B.S. people.  Wright's words were more than likel;y a faint whisper heard only by Obama as an interference to his own thoughts. After all this is the guy who has  "Audacity of Hope" to change the world or perhaps rule it. Obama is annoyed with those that do not endorse his ideas and he views that as waylaying his plans to fix the U.S. and get on with fixing the world. What an ego, but that was his campaign rhetoric. "Change this country precinct by precint state by state and  change Washington and then the world". I paraphrased a bit, but that is what I heard him say. The presidency is an incident on his way to greater things. "Good Morning America how are you. don't you know me I'm your native son". I'm sorry but America is getting sidetracked.

108 We have to get these fuckheads out of there in 2010. If they get their hands on the Census, we are screwed. It isn't just about reapportionment, which is bad enough. It's about distribution of billions in federal funding that goes out by formula based on population. Liberals want to use "sampling" to count minorities who they claim are always undercounted - though they never give a good reason why this is, just like they never have a good reason why it is a burden on minorities to have everyone show photo ID to vote. The Constitution requires a census that counts actual people. Liberals think they can use sampling to increase the numbers of minorities and poor people and get more federal dollars to their pet programs.

This is all of a piece with Card Check, immigration reform, etc. They are trying to build a permanent Democratic majority, and a majority of leeches who will bleed the rest of us dry.
