Leon Panetta…Feckless Crapweasel*

Yesterday Obama’s nominee to head the CIA basically accused the agency he wants to run of violating the law. Today, not so much.

The United States will continue to hand foreign detainees over to other countries for questioning, but only with assurances they will not be tortured, Leon Panetta told a Senate committee considering his confirmation as CIA director.

That has long been U.S. policy, but some former prisoners subjected to the process — known as extraordinary rendition_ during the Bush administration's anti-terror war say they were tortured.

"I will seek the same kind of assurances that they will not be treated inhumanely," Panetta said Friday in his second day before the Senate Intelligence Committee. "I intend to use the State Department to be sure those assurances are implemented and stood by, by those countries."

Panetta formally retracted a statement he made Thursday that the Bush administration transferred prisoners for the purpose of torture.

"I am not aware of the validity of those claims," he said.

Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., chastised Panetta for careless words. "You cannot be making statements or making judgments based on rumors and news stories," he said.

So, is Panetta prone to tossing out inflammatory statements he isn't sure are true or is he willing to shade what he honestly knows to be true for the sake of political expediency? I have to say, neither option is particular appealing in a prospective head of the CIA.

Obama fan girl Andrea Mitchell says CIA leaders were not happy with Panetta throwing them under the legal bus still accused Sen. Bond of, “carrying the water for the agency” when he confronted Panetta.

I’m sure lefties will be satisfied that Panetta is just saying what he needs to say about ‘torture’ and that he’s really on their side. Either way, a guy with little to no intelligence experience has pissed off the people he is supposed to lead by stepping on the biggest landmine out there before he even gets the gig. No, this will work out great. No problems at all.

*As always, thanks to Jonah Goldberg for coining that particular insult.

9 In Stephen King's book Dreamcatcher, King uses the word "shitweasel" frequently.  I don't recall any point in the book where he describes them as "feckless", though.

Of course in King's book, the "shitweasels" are hideous, weasel-like aliens that climb out of people's asses.  No, really.

16 Panetta was a useless cocksucking shillboy for Slick in the 90s.  Since the CIA showed itself to be a nest of anti-American vipers with the Plame slut and her pretty-boy excuse for a husband, there's a part of me that thinks they deserve Leon.  Unfortunately the agency will probably never receive the thorough cleaning out it deserves; in fact under President 666 it will probably be KGB West.

I was just coming back to point that out.  Though I'm not a Gates fan to say the least he is at least a competent adult.  Add Gregg to the list as well.  Alright, what I should have said was "there's a competent non-republican adult in Obama's administration".

Panetta has isolated himself now from the people in the CIA whom he was expected to lead.  This, combined with the fact that Obama is going to hamstring our efforts in the War on Terror ... and the fact that Panetta is fucktard lacky who's not even qualified to be in the CIA anyway - these things will ensure that our CIA is IMPOTENT for the next four years.

45 This has always been a stupid policy. We don't torture people because we are oh-so-pure and moral, and because we claim it doesn't work. But we know that's a lie, so we outsource the torture to people less hypocritical than we are. But we make them promise that they won't use torture, while knowing full well that's the reason we sent them there, and that our hired hands will say whatever we want as long as they get paid. And we can't even trust the torturers because they aren't really on our side anyway. Fuck it. Keep the prisoners here, torture them here, and stop lying about it. Nobody believes us anyway.

I posted this comment under the never-ending campaign thread before this one appeared:

The words of CIA Director-wannabee Leon Panetta:

(On the accusations he made yesterday that Bush rendered terrorists to other countries to get them torutred) "I am not aware of the validity of those claims."

Translation: You know, I think maybe what got Nixon in trouble was that sometimes he spoke a bit too straightforwardly, don't you guys agree?

"I think they made some wrong decisions, I think they made mistakes," he said. "I think sometimes they believe the ends justifies the means, and that's where people sometimes go wrong."  He said he thinks that in the fear of another 9/11-style attack, Bush administration officials thought, "We can't be bothered with legalisms."

Translation: Legalisms rock!

"The sense that we were willing to set that aside (US moral authority and commitment to the rule of law) did damage our security."

Translation: As Director, CIA, my job #1 is to look out for the moral authority of this country... hell, nobody else in this administration ever bothers to explain the moral high-road stuff for you rubes.

Could we burn up the phone lines and get this idiot nomination filibustered, please?

Posted by: richard mcenroe at February 06, 2009 03:00 PM (dHTH5)

63 Here's the thing, all Panetta had to do was make generic stateements 100% in favor of Mom, Apple Pie, and the Flag and he gets confirmed.

Yet he deliberately picks a fight with the CIA. On his confirmation hearings. Panetta don't draw a breath without Obama telling him it's OK.

And Obama in the IL Senate and US Senate has a habit of ducking fights, confrontations, voting present, and saying anything (see the campaign promise thread).

Now, by my count, Obama has picked a fight over the Spendulus bill, over the Fairness Doctrine, a personal fight with Rush, a fight with the 9/11 families and Cole survivors over what amounts to releasing the guys at Gitmo (so says Andrew McCarthy and he should know), ...

and the CIA.

Which has a habit of leaking like a sieve to every journalist in town, who owe them favors and can't just shut them out (otherwise no goodies later) and start off figuring that Obama will throw them under the bus for prosecutions for pouring water up KSM's nose or being rude to Jihadis.

ANY attack on the US, and now the CIA will leak ALL SORTS of embarrassing info on Obama "knew" ala the infamous CYA memo presented to Bush. Obama ain't stupid -- he saw this already with Bush.

It's two weeks plus, Obama is fighting a four front front war (Reps over the Spendulus, Fairness, Gitmo and the 9/11 Families, the CIA). The latter arguably hamstrung GWB.

Obama is not stupid politically, you don't win from nowhere the Presidency without counting votes damn well.

The office should come with a nice big sword to fall on.
