| The Neverending CampaignPresident Obama, speaking to the Democrats: "We're not going to get relief by turning back to the very same policies that, for the last eight years, doubled the national debt and threw our economy into a tailspin," he said. "We can't embrace the losing formula that says only tax cuts will work for every problem we face, that ignores critical challenges like our addiction to foreign oil, or the soaring cost of health care, or failing schools and crumbling bridges and roads and levees. "I don't care whether you're driving a hybrid or an SUV -- if you're headed for a cliff, you've got to change direction." ... "We're not moving quickly because we're trying to jam something down people's throats," he said. "We're moving quickly because if we don't, the economy's going to keep getting worse." Obama rejected calls for more tax cuts and significant slashing of the bill's more than $800 billion price tag, and said complaints the package was a spending bill rather than a stimulus bill were off base. "What do you think a stimulus bill is?" he said. "That's the point." To critics who argue that the government shouldn't be spending billions with a large and growing deficit, Obama said, "I found this national debt doubled, wrapped in a big bow waiting for me as I stepped into the Oval Office." The American people called for change in November, he said, "and that's what we're going to deliver."Gravitas. So let's see if I've got this right. The GOP left Obama with a doubled national debt (wrapped in a big bow, even), and the best way to "change" the country's direction is to triple or quadruple that debt by spending money on the NEA, child-care and “neighborhood stabilization activities?" When President Obama was Candidate Obama, he promised to give 95% of us a tax cut. The porkfest passed by the House includes $275 billion in tax breaks and $550 billion in spending, even though more tax cuts would make the bill more popular with voters. But Obama rejects "that theory," and says that you did as well. After all, he won. Rich Lowry calls Obama's need to resort to that argument "is a symptom of the intellectual collapse of the case for his stimulus bill," then reminds us what Obama said on the campaign trail. The president should read the transcript of the third presidential debate. He claimed his program represented “a net spending cut.” He called himself “a strong proponent of pay-as-you-go. Every dollar that I’ve proposed, I’ve proposed an additional cut so that it matches.” He added, “We need to eliminate a whole host of programs that don’t work.” Now, circumstances change, and no president can adhere to every jot and tittle from his campaign, but the “I won” argument only works if the campaign program matches the governing program. Obama himself seems confused on what exactly “I won” means. In a meeting with congressional Republicans, he brandished “I won” as a defense of his version of tax relief. But he later used “I won” to push back against an excessive reliance on tax cuts, claiming that it had been repudiated during the campaign even though he talked every day on the trail of cutting taxes for “95 percent of working people” and never once mentioned a commitment to extreme deficit spending.Obama's actions now show just how deceptive he was then. On the campaign trail, Obama repeatedly lied to the American people about his economic plans. He lied about his commitment to clean, transparent government. He lied about his willingness to work in a bipartisan fashion. Obama is not even pretending he meant what he said then. In only three weeks, Obama has managed to undermine many of the central tenets of his claim to represent hope and change. He has gone from promising to bring "an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas..." to using arguments like "I won," and the worn-out campaign rhetoric he threw to the Democrats last night. Lets see, cant make a cogent argument, cant get majority support for your policies, cant appoint cabinet members who arent hipocritical liberal tax cheats, cant come up with an original idea for stimulating the economy (no, massive spending on pork projects is not an original idea OR change)..... Lets bash Republicans some more! Fucking YAWN. What a joke.

Why does Barry and the Dims insist on having Republican support for this pork bill? They don't need it. If they are so certain this will save the economy then vote on it and pass it with only Dim support. They will get all of the credit for saving the economy and the Republicans will take a hit for it. So if this is going to do what they say it will why are they afraid to pass it by themselves?

Barack Obama and the House Democrat caucus are spending a
luxurious weekend at a spa few Americans could afford, By doing this
they provide a blatant example of the power abusing behavior that
Barack has been criticizing Wall Street for engaging in. This will probably make them less popular. But they sure are setting an
egregious example of what people with some power and free access to
other people's money can do to prove they don't deserve the trust
they've been given. What are the chances Michelle Obama will show up in
a $7,000 dress and tell us how mean spirited Americans are? No, that
won't happen since the network and newspaper arm of the Democrat PR
machine no longer reports any of Michelle O's embarrassing statements.
It is strange that the Democrat press corps is reporting any of this
conspicuous consumption. I guess they've all gone so Washington that
they don't even realize that it's disgusting and looks bad: they seem
to have lost a lot of their ability to recognize hypocrisy.
Maybe that stimulus bill has a couple of billion for congressional partying hidden away. When you only work three days a week the time has to get filled somehow. If only they hadn't neutered their ethics committee and decided to cover for each other all the time they could hold themselves responsible for such absues. If only . . . We were set up. A con. Now the hard sell and the payoff. Obama is a con man; our current environment of credit crisis and bank failure does not demand immediate action by the Fed. It DOES demand a restoration of confidence by having logical and reasoned arguments for methods of repair, and by having an adult in charge. Note that the adult in charge is NOT in charge of polishing his image and staring at himself in the mirror. "I won" my ass. So far our current administration is a giant F-up. Who disagrees?

Um no Nightmare is was tax cuts to a very small percentage of the population with no reductions in spending that actually got us into the problem. By "small percentage of the population", you do mean the 100% of the population that pays taxes, right? Because, dumbass, that's the percentage of taxpayers that benefit from an across-the-board marginal tax rate cut. Now you know. And I'd agree with you about the spending, but of course, as a liberal, you'd be reflexively opposed to actually, you know, cutting any spending in the areas that are the biggest abusers of the federal deficit like those sweet, sweet entitlement programs that are racing our economy towards oblivion. Again the President is loose with the facts. The debt has not been doubled. It went from 5.7 to 10 trillion. What's a 1 or 2 trillion dollar inaccuracy when you are trying to make a point. Further, the debt compared to GDP is about 69%. This is a record since 1955 but to put it in context, the debt during Clinton's term reached 67% until the dotcom boom and no wars or military buildups lowered it. Also the debt during Carter's term was in the high 30% range. That did us a lot of good. Lastly take into consideration that the debt figure includes our wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the almost trillion dollar bailout at the end of Bush's term not to mention that all of the other debt generators were fully supported by the Dems.

It's all part of the same agenda as the "stimulus" package Generational Theft Act: It all makes perfect sense if you're trying to run the U.S. economy into the ground--so that you can seize total power and build the new Socialist Paradise. 'Course, the only way you can grind an economy to a halt and still keep anything running is to get rid of a lot of excess people. Obama's buddy Ayers and his Weather Underground comrades got that all figured out years ago: "eliminate" up to 25 million people--those of us who don't respond well to "re-education." I never doubted their evil intent, but I must say, I am actually surprised by how damn quickly they're moving on all this shit--e.g., that bill introduced last week to turn several military bases into "civilian detention centers" to be used in "national emergencies"--the declaration of emergency being, of course, determined by the Administration. His hypocrisy and misguided notions about what works and what doesn't shows just how good of an education he got in college while hanging around with all his radical buddies so no one would think he was a sellout. The speech above only confirms that this idiot is in way over his head. "We can't embrace the losing formula that says only tax cuts will work for every problem we face, that ignores critical challenges like our addiction to foreign oil, or the soaring cost of health care, or failing schools and crumbling bridges and roads and levees." Well, Mr. The One, tax cuts work every time they've been implemented. Remember the record day of tax income Washington had not long ago? Our addiction to foreign oil could be cured with the stroke of a pen. Tort reform would go a long way to reducing the cost of health care by stopping frivolous lawsuits and all of the extra procedures that are performed because of them. If the schools are so bad, why not offer parents a real choice with vouchers? See, these problems can be fixed, if you want them fixed. It's easy. 32: No doubt it's part of their master plan. I, too, am floored by how quickly they're moving. I get the sense that they know they have a limited amount of time to pull this revolution off before the American people wake up to the Marxist's plans. The economy won't get better anytime soon. Layoffs will continue at a frightening pace and the US Treasury market will collapse. Interest has already increased 50% on T-Bills from the December auctions to the most recent ones (2% to 3%). That may not sound like much but it's only the beginning. The rest of the world will very quickly tire of funding our debt and will demand to be compensated for it. The fact that we're sitting on enough resources to go a long way towards energy independence and won't tap into them is the clearest sign of the Marxist's intent. They want to.....they have to create a situation so dire that only they can save the day...classic Marxist power consolidation...right our of Rules for Radicals. They have a playbook and are following it to a T. And I fear that whatever terrorist attack or other worldly military even that will occur in the next 6 months (Biden's 'gird you loins' warning....) will be the catalyst for the final phase of their revolution. The language in that bill you mentioned is absolutely frightening and ominious. Something wicked this way comes. Posted by: theadmiral at February 06, 2009 10:30 AM (7umsY) 43

If so,then the election was fraudulent: if you vote for a candidate based upon what they say they will do and then they don't, then your vote has been stolen. This guy is a permanent candidate b/c that's all he knows. He's never had to do anything more than campaign based on who he is, and then have things handed to him. He's certainly no leader, but he knows how to take advantage out of what's handed to him, and he's going to bleed every red cent he can get out the opportunity.
By the way, I'm home from work today on an unpaid day while my job reorganizes. Half my department was laid off this week. And lord knows there's hardly any other jobs out there. The problem with the Anointed One as liar is that he doesn't even know when he is lying. When you're young, fairly bright [I don't think he's stupid--just naive] and have always been able to talk your way out of trouble in the past because you think you're the brightest kid in the room [think Bill Clinton], you'll say any Hope 'n Change crapola that passes through your mind. The fact that you can't possibly deliver on your campaign promises is "just a distraction" and is "divisive". So you lie through your teeth. But when the rubber meets the road, and you can't simply vote "present" anymore you either smarten up--or wonder where that Mack truck came from that just ran over you. And in Obama's case, there is probably a line of Mack truck problems 16 miles long waiting to run over him. He's going to look like a waffle until he learns to lead. I figure it's going to take about six months until he either wises up or resigns himself to being a total washout. The White House is not really a place for on the job training in being an executive--which is why most Presidents in the last 40 plus years had prior experience as state governors. Obama had no such experience--which is why Sarah Palin was more qualified to be President than the Anointed One. So let's hope we all survive the next six months without permanent damage to the Republic until "waffles" learns how to do the job. I give us maybe a 25% chance of doing so, but unlike Rush Limbaugh, I'm pulling for the 25% chance, simply for the good of our country.

Please forgive me for the following short history lesson, whickh I know has been said here before. But it's something we really can't afford to forget.
After the fall of communism, Clinton and congress slashed military and intelligenge spending. With some increasing tax revenues from the Tech Bubble, we were closer to having a balanced budget that we'd been in a long time.
Then the Tech Bubble burst, followed by 9/11. Tax revenues slowed at the same time that military spending had to be increased drastically. The Bush tax cuts, especially the change in capital gains, helped boost revenues. But most of that was eaten up by new entitlements sponsored by Bush with the help of many Democrats (Prescription Drug benefits, NCLB. etc.). So, the net effect of all this is that the defecit grew larger and larger.
Do deficits matter? I think we're now learning the hard way that, yes, they do. Because the cost of borrowing keeps getting higher and higher, and, with government competing with industry for available capital, the government wins but businesses and the engines that drive private-sector job creation lose.
The lessons from this should be: 1. Keep defense spending at an adequate level, especially during "peace". 2. Pass a Balanced Budget amenment. 3. Limit the cost of government to a reasonable percent of the GDP.
Maybe then we all can live little more free, and break away from boom-bust cycles that fuel the peoples desire for more government.

More of that change we were warning about. Fox News Story on Obama's Habitual Tardiness. He's also reversed an unwritten but much-noticed Bush policy: Be on time, all the time. The president was nearly 30 minutes late Wednesday for the ceremony at which he signed a bill to expand children's health care. He was 10 minutes late Thursday to a memo signing at the Energy Department. "To me, being tardy, it's got to be one of two things," said presidential historian Doug Wead, who advised both Bush and his father, George H.W. Bush. "Bad organization that can be corrected, or it's arrogance. It sounds to me like this is arrogance." Posted by: Dang at February 06, 2009 12:20 PM (Y5LIx) 113

Here's a thought. $900 billion divided by the 3.6 million unemployed allows the government to provide 1 years worth of work at a salary of $250,000 per person. The unemployed in turn will spend this money in any number of ways. Paying off their mortgages and credit cards, etc., etc. You get the picture. I call this new plan the trickle up approach! Had a conversation in the store, the woman in front of me on line suddenly began talking to me as though she has no one to share her thoughts with and, since the line was long, I just stood there with everyone else listening to her. She says she is sick of hearing about the CDO's and about people "maybe losing their profit". She said "I did everything right, I bought and sold houses to finally buy my dream house (dream house here being a house that accommodated a hubby, 4 kids, 2 dogs and a cat). I counted on the money I put in my house to help us with retirement. Now, says this woman, my house has depreciated. This means that I am losing my money, the money I put in as a down payment. The bank will lose nothing. They, when my house is sold, will receive all the money due to them. We (her and DH) will receive considerably less than we put up.
So, tell me why I should care if these people "lose their profit" as it is clear that I am losing mine. This bill out there is not doing anything for me. My bank says "tough, we gave you a jumbo mortgage (apparently the woman is carrying a million dollar mortgage) (surprising because she looked like a regular middle class person) and we expect you to pay back that jumbo mortgage and we don't care if your house has depreciated to far far below your purchase price. (At this point she shared with us that a banker this morning had told her that she should have realized that housing prices could not keep appreciating as they did and that maybe three years ago she shuold not have bought her new house and taken on such a large mortgage) She then begain saying that she felt that home would not depreciate and , if anything, they would remain stagnant, who could have predicted, she said that we would have such a mess. Thank God she then left. But then everyone else chimed in their opinions. People really feel that "if the CDO people make their profit then there should be something in there (I guess "there" being this stimulus bill) to force the banks to lower mortgages in accordance with property worth. Most everyone agreed. I guess people want the banks to share in their loss. As one man put it "They should be forced to adjust my mortgage to a number that coincides with the current value of my home and lower my rate". when someone else pointed out that the banks would be taking a loss everyone else said that the banks created the mess and should have some of the consequences. Interesting right, that this conversation would bet aking place, people are far more engaged that I thought. Posted by: hmmmm at February 06, 2009 01:11 PM (zplc6) 135

Arrogance. The only word needed to describe this presidency. The Dems and the One (also the media, but that goes without saying) want "bi-partisanship" (ie: "roll over for us and take it") because when the citizens realize they've been royally and handsomely screwed, they want to have the ability to point their fingers at the Republicans. Nothing doing, dears. I just hope that the Republicans can pull it together and keep saying "NO." Posted by: soulpile at February 06, 2009 01:35 PM (gH+Hj) 140
Wasn't there a video of clips strung together of the messiah in the senate showing up late saying, sorry I'm late or sorry I'm missed the first part of the meeting? I thought I saw something like that a few months ago that showed he was always arriving late for senate meetings. Yes. We were warned, and here he is with the same arrogant, BS behavior in the Oval Office. But with this ass hole, being late might not be such a bad thing. Maybe he'll just stop showing up all together. Posted by: Dang at February 06, 2009 01:38 PM (Y5LIx) 141
This is a golden opportunity for the GOP senators to ignore the whining from The Vapid One‰ and join their House counterparts in voting "no" on this Grand Socialization Scheme. As the polls show mounting discontent with this Obamanation, I'm convinced that the American people are beginning to wake up from their slumber to realize we've been royally screwed. "What he is saying is, pass this shit NOW so we can get more folks on the tit so they can vote for us in two years."
Which, of course, are the basic tenets of the Dem party. I have no doubt that 90%+ of Dem elected officials don't give a rat's ass about the public and the welfare and fairness given to the poor. They are simply seen as votes. Nothing more. Imagine a world where the MSM actually reported the truth and put Barry under the microscope. This country would be in a massive uproar if they only knew what was happening, how it's happening, and who is facilitating it. Posted by: Twinks at February 06, 2009 01:45 PM (KGbOi) 143
After Barry's spoiled child routine of "I won" and "People voted for change" crap the Republicans should say, fine then vote on. We won't go along with it so let's see if you have the balls to pass it all by yourselves.

I caught one “Democratic Strategist” on one of the cable channels last night saying that the “stimulus” was endorsed by a member of the Bush Administration, but then went on to describe the Bush policies as a “discredited economic philosophy”. I came away thinking that a purveyor of a “discredited economic philosophy” thought the “stimulus” was a good idea. Did I miss something in this ? May I suggest he try a new strategy. hmmm - Geithner is proposing to pay off part of the mortgage for people who are living in houses they can't afford. We are living in a house we can afford, and have worked hard to keep it, but our tax money will go towards people like the million-dollar house lady in the grocery store, so she can continue living in the luxury we never had in the first place. We pay HER mortage for her, see? Why? Because we bought a house we can afford. She needs our money more than we do. Those who worked hard and did it right must pay for those who have no sense at all, so they can keep on living better than we do. Communism at its finest. From bloomberg.com
Senator Charles Grassley said President Barack Obama has run into tax troubles with his appointees because the process of vetting them was “well- intentioned but too rushed.” The 75-year-old senior senator from Iowa said he intends to run for a sixth term next year. “It took me 22 years to get enough seniority to do good for my people, and I’m going to continue to do good,” he said. Some Republicans had worried that Grassley would retire, leaving the seat vulnerable to a Democratic takeover. Grassley praised Obama for “doing what he’s done” to cap compensation for executives at companies that receive federal aid. The senator said he might support Obama’s financial rescue package as long as it includes a public accounting of how the money is spent.

True a home is a place to live, not an investment. However, most people expect to get the money they put as a down payment back. Somewhere along the way appraisals fell short and the buyer had no way of knowing this. They assumed if the home "appraised out" that they were paying the correct price and were somehow protected. The banks truly participated in the appreciation of homes as more people were buying and taking larger mortgages and paying larger fees for those mortgages. As I said to the people online with me, this is certainly not a black and white issue there are definitively shades of grey. Hidden within are issues of trust and ethics and morality and greed. Sure the banks should not be hosed but then again neither should the home owner since the system has apparently failed them both. What is interesting is that people seem to want to see more in this bill addressing the housing crisis and they aren't finding it. Posted by: hmmmm at February 06, 2009 02:05 PM (zplc6) 151

#147, Alana. In some parts of the country, you can carry a million dollar mortgage and a like and kind house in some place like Idaho would be $125,000. I didn't get the impression that this woman had a manse. She seemed to have a frame colonial with 4 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths and a two car garage on less than 1/2 an acre and she indicated that where she grew up she would have paid 1/10 for the home. Eventually, people like this will begin loosing their home too. She indicated that she put over 20% down from the sale of her previous home. My point in relaying the story was to touch on the fact that these appear to be the silent problems out there and I was shocked that "the bill" was even being discussed on line in a store. The media has given me the impression that people aren't interested and that was not my experience this morning.

As I said to the people online with me, this is certainly not a black and white issue there are definitively shades of grey. Not as far as I'm concerned. Anyone who thinks that a bank should share in the costs of a depreciating asset but doesn't similarly argue that they should share in the profits of an appreciating one is a self-serving shitbag. Somehow I doubt all these neo-populists and their "my mortgage should go down when my house loses value" rah-rahs weren't similarly pounding down the doors of their lending institutions demanding that their mortgage principals balloon as their property values were skyrocketing. I can't believe how weak and pathetic some people are. You're having trouble making the payments on your million dollar home and you want my sympathy? Fuck off. She signed a contract to borrow money at a certain rate of interest and pay said money back on time. It doesn’t matter what the price of the house is, if she is an honest person she will replay the loan.
If she is a dishonest shitweasel she will walk out of the house, lose hger 20% and tough shit.
However, if the Vomit and the rest of the commies get theior way she will get a lower interest rate and probably a 25K tax deduction.

I agree, hmmm, that there are silent cases, plus actual hardship cases out there.
I don't think she was one of them, though And I agree that 1 million isn't all that huge amount to pay for a house in some areas, if you look at it from an upper-middle-class viewpoint. Still. I live in an area where I've watched yuppies buy large, brand-new houses and more and more such houses being built. As status symbols. And us, in our 20-year-old out-of-style home, tucked in an area of similar out-of-style homes, increasingly surrounded by homes we never could figure out how so many people could afford. The answer was: They can't. And the solution being proposed is: We are supposed to watch as they get the principle knocked down on their mortgages. What about us? Who's going to knock down the principle from our mortgage? Why should we pay for their mistakes? They get free money and we get nothing? I tell you, I'm ready to quit. I hope the revolution comes soon, and I don't care what form it takes: Tax revolt, secession, you name it. We didn't live our whole lives working hard, being honest, living modestly, and playing by the rules just so they could TAKE OUR FREAKIN MONEY to GIVE to people who we are supposed to feel SORRY for because they bit off more than they could CHEW. So they can STAY in those houses surrounding us, which they never could afford in the first place, and keep bragging on them. I truly see no point in participating in a system that does that. Obama's point about it being a "spending" bill is this: Keynes famously said it didn't matter if you employed people to dig holes in the ground, as long as you employed them.
Ergo, Obama doesn't really care what the money is spent on. Well, where shall one start? 1. IF you REALLY have to spend that money, why not build, just for instance, REFINERIES or NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS or HYDROELECTRIC projects? 2. IF you don't care WHAT you spend it on... why not DEFENSE? I mean, China is rising, Russia is belligerent, Iran just launched a satellite and is getting nukes... two wars ongoing... don't tell me that would be money wasted. 3. Abortions for the Third World? Even Keynes didn't say dig the whole in somebody else's country! If only Obama had actually come up with HIS OWN spending plan, instead of just asking 532 congressional jackasses to blow the money on anything they wanted... So Barry you found the deficit, wrapped in a bow, waiting on you? How did it get there? Im no constitutional expert, but didn't the 07 and 08 budgets get drafted by a Democratic run congress? Didn't Senator Barack Obama vote on the very budgets that lead to those deficits?
Of course I'm sure he was too busy spreading the hopeychangeyness around Iowa to know what was going on in the Senate. Posted by: matt at February 06, 2009 03:57 PM (r6SJw) 172
