| Change! US To Delay Adding Troops To AfghanistanUm, I seem to remember a certain candidate for President beating up on a then President about the need to focus on Afghanistan and add resources to the fight there. Things change.ABC News has learned that Defense Secretary Robert Gates has decided to delay a decision to send additional troops into Afghanistan until after the Obama administration concludes its ongoing review of the strategy for Afghanistan. The surprising decision comes after the much anticipated proposal to send three additional combat brigades to Afghanistan -- or 17,000 troops as reported by ABC News last week -- was presented to Secretary Gates for his approval this afternoon. The Pentagon troop proposal anticipated a large Marine brigade to be followed by two Army Brigade Combat Teams, including a Stryker Brigade. The top US general in Afghanistan , Gen. David McKiernan favors using the armored vehicles as a way of extending his troops' presence to remote regions of Afghanistan. Gates told Congress last week that he anticipated that should a decision to send additional brigades be made, "we could have two of those brigades there probably by late spring, and potentially a third by mid-summer." It's unclear how long the decision will be delayed given that the reviews are expected to go on for at least another few weeks and possibly a few months. It makes no sense to drop troops in if you don't have a strategy for them but I fear this is simply the beginning of a very long wind down militarily around the world in the Age of Obama. Ah remember the old days when Obama demanded troops be added to Afghanistan? And by 'old days' I mean 5 days ago. Obama said he wants to add troops to turn back the Taliban, but he has not gone beyond the approximately 30,000 additional forces already under consideration by the previous administration. Those troops will nearly double the U.S. presence in Afghanistan this year. But they amount to a finger in the dike while Obama recalibrates a chaotic mishmash of military and development objectives.Apparently the AP did not get the memo that we have always wanted to freeze troop levels in Afghanistan. I wonder if Secretary Gates is feeling a little suckered right about now. Comments1
Wind her down and pull out boys. Y'all come home so when the invaders attack our shores we can spill their blood on American soil.

Yes, we should remove the troops from Afghanistan in the same manner and fashion in which we removed all troops from the Korean peninsula after cessation of hostilities in 1954.

It's fine to lay this at Obama's feet... but there's a missed step in the analysis.
The Pentagon is being forced to reconsider the strategy on account of the pending loss of its air base in Krgystan [i'm not even going to check if that's spelled right]. With Pakistan being the only remaining route for supply, it's a sound move to have a pause before sending in an additional 3 brigades. Now, we're on course to lose our air base in Krgystan because we just elected a weak, vacillating, newbie community organizer as our Commander-in-Chief. Gotta luv how Gates has to take the fall for the delay.
This is good news to me. I was not particularly enthralled with Prez'nit Erkel's *cough* "plan" to dump 30,000 troops into Afghanistan without a plan. Is it just me, or did Jughead simply lift the number from the surge that supposedly didn't work and decide to use this 'failed policy" in Afghanistan, regardless of the fact that everyone with a clue said it wouldn't work and the situation in Afghanistan is completely different that the pre-surge situation in Iraq? Funny... I don't seem to hear anything from the MSM on this most recent "distraction" the The One's omipotent plans. Posted by: Damiano at February 05, 2009 07:17 PM (cfKer) 16
Will someone please send the new Cabinet over to the MilBlogs, to my page and those of my colleagues for some schooling in what is Afghanistan. Obama nor Holbrooke seem to have a clue as to how to deal with Afghans, Pakis, nor Iraqis. It's not really that hard. All you need is an NCO with some ground experience to give you a few hints. Well, why should the Krygs (sp?, who cares?) have our back when they can't expect for us to have theirs? This is not good in the least bit, and while I bet Gates is hating this, I'm glad he's in there. He seems to know what he is doing. One of the few things (only thing?) Obama has done right is to keep him there, where he can at least act as a knowledgable advocate for our military while doing his best to keep the situation on track. Why worry about Afghanistan? We've got people who want to help us.
MOSCOW – President Dmitry Medvedev said Wednesday that Russia and its ex-Soviet allies want to help the United States stabilize Afghanistan, saying Moscow wanted "full-fledged" cooperation with Washington. He spoke a day after the ex-Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan announced it would evict the U.S. from an air base key to the Afghan war. Kyrgyzstan made the move after getting a promise for $2 billion in loans from Russia — which resents the American presence in a region Moscow regards as part of its traditional sphere of influence. The possibility of the base closure poses a serious challenge to the new U.S. administration and President Barack Obama's plan to send up to 30,000 more American forces into Afghanistan this year.Posted by: TheQuietMan at February 05, 2009 07:51 PM (bup0l) 35

Given the extremely tenuous nature of our logistics chain over there, I'm not surprised the Administration is taking a second look at pumping up the numbers.
1. The potential loss of the airbasing in Kyrgistan 2. The Paki militants cut the Khyber pass route this week 3. The JCS is recommending some changes in the desired end state So it's not a big surprise they want to take a look at where they want to go. But as with many things the new administration has done, the presentation of it has been handled poorly. They look like a monkey trying to fuck a football. They are as ate up as a soup sandwich. GW Bush - protecting Americans against terrorists.
Barry Obama - protecting terrorists against Americans WASHINGTON – The Pentagon says the senior military judge overseeing terror trials at Guantanamo Bay has dropped charges against a suspect in the 2000 USS Cole bombing. The military charges against suspected al-Qaida bomber Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri marked the last active war crimes case at Guantanamo Bay. Obama was expected to meet with families of Cole and 9/11 victims at the White House on Friday afternoon to announce the move. Groups representing victims' families were angered by Obama's order, charging they had waited too long already to see the alleged attackers brought to court. I hope they kick his fucking ass. Obama can't add troops because he no longer has the supply lines to do so. His Pakistani route is under constant attack and the Pakistanis can do nothing to control it; the Taliban are swatting convoys left and right and have taken down bridges along the route.
The Russians are playing coy with their assistance, as have some of the other Central Asian republics. That means that US logistics are up in the air, and supporting the existing mission is difficult enough; adding thousands more troops further complicates things. It doesn't mean Obama can't make it happen, but Obama may be getting advice from the generals to not push things until they can sort out the logistics. Posted by: lawhawk at February 05, 2009 09:20 PM (bMRnM) 54
They're getting scared. And they should be, since if they go big and long in Afghanistan among other things they'll wreck the Obama presidency. Which isn't to say they aren't going to do it nonetheless.

I don't remember where I read it, but I'll elaborate on it a bit... You know, when you compare GW Bush to Obama, it's almost as if Bush just got an MBA, learned some discipline flying jets in the military, and got some senior executive experience in the private sector and as a Governor before becoming President, instead of just soaring straight to becoming a brilliant orator and insta-author, Chicago-machine-made-Senator, and MSM-certified President, like Obama just did. And of course, Laura Bush's "jobs" as librarian and teacher are pretty shabby compared to Michelle's achievement of landing a $300K position in her first non-intern job without even passing the Bar (blowing away the competition so bad they didn't even interview anyone else) and then finally doing the damn job so excellently that when she left for Washington, it wasn't even necessary to replace her! Damn, those communities had been outreached to in a superfine manner! When you elect a Dem, you elect quality. Posted by: sherlock at February 05, 2009 09:36 PM (8V5Ut) 59
