Whoa: Generic Congressional Ballot Preference Narrows to 4% Difference

Republican support up three points. Narrowing the 7 point gap to a doable 4 point difference.

And at the link, Michael Barone reports that the death of the GOP in Virginia have been greatly overstated.

Bush became unpopular mainly not due to ideology, but because he was viewed as a poor manager who screwed things up.

Obama and the Democrats are replicating that great mistake by championing this wastrel spendulus bill. The GOP can and should win on this -- just by convincing the public that they once again, finally, care about how taxpayer money is being spent.

Obama and the liberals have misdiagnosed the "mandate" they were given. They think the mandate was for a dramatic change in basic governing ideology -- they think the public is clamoring for spending and socialism, and don't give a crap about the details.

They're badly wrong as recent polling suggests. The public really didn't change its basic center-right take. They just want better management of that center-right philosophy.

Heh: Now that the Spendulus Bill has dropped in popularity to the level of the war in Iraq, do you think reporters will begin referring to it (as they did with the war) as "the President's deeply unpopular spending package?"

Just curious. Well, not really.

Thanks for both to Larwyn.

5 The question is will we be able to reverse the damage done by Obama in the next 4 years. If enough blue dogs and moderate Democrats fear for their political future we may be able to water down some of the stuff, but we won't be able to reverse socialized medicine, unilateral disarmament,  SCOTUS, etc.

6 Well as long as the Dems are anywhere close they can still always win by cheating. That is what they are good at. We need to go after these guys on every little thing, every little bit of corruption. We should no longer let our candidates do interviews with any of the MSM. We need to use proxies when dealing with the MSM. That will really help to get people focused on the corrupt Dems.

Spendin' our money on ear marks.

She said,
"We need to squeeze more from the country."

Paying your taxes can give you
a heart attackackackackackack
We oughta know by now
If we try to bail out Freddie Mac,
We won't get squat back for our money.

And it seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
Honey, if that's 'stimulus' then I'm

42 Hey, the first thing the public expects from the Daddy party is basic competence.  After the mismanagement of the war, Katrina, Harriet Myers, and just the basic, maddening refusal to defend himself and his policies in the face of Bush Derangement Syndrome, no wonder voters drifted away.  Plus the fact that saying Bush spent money like a drunken sailor is an insult to drunken sailors everywhere.

So when you factor in the incompetence, the spending, and the unilateral disarmament, no wonder voters were disillusioned.  If a new GOP gets back to basic competence, the voters will return.

Posted by: Ombudsman at February 04, 2009 06:21 PM (fWF4Q)

43 mismanagement of the war -- You mean the Iraq War which has been won?

mismanagement of Katrina -- You mean Bush could've done one damned thing differently or that the press savaged him for political purposes?

The biggest problem was that Bush didn't fight back. It made him look incompetent as he succeeded on his most important agenda items. On that one I agree wholeheartedly.

47 Ombudsman,

But what about the "mismanagement" of the Kentucky ice storm?  55 people freezing to death and half a million -still- without power last time I checked, while Obama having steaks and keeping the White House in orchid-warming temperatures.

The mistake you're making is believing anything the media told you.  The standard by which anything any Republican does is compared not against how Democrats have historically handled things, but against perfection, so that any imperfection whatsoever is labelled "mismanagement" (I personally believe "the war" could not have been handled better by ANY metric that actually uses, you know, -other- wars as a baseline).

That media isn't changing.  Republican mistakes will always be fabricated, and Democrat mistakes will always be covered up.  Where the majority of actual mistakes happens is irrelevant.  So just saying that if Republicans become more competent, things will change isn't true.

Can't argue with you about Bush not defending himself, though.  That was infuriating.  I do have to wonder if Bush -was- defending himself, and the media just steadfastly ignored it so we didn't hear about it.  I know that did happen at least twice, but I don't know if it was more pervasive than that.

I don't agree with this.  I think his ratings were low because the fiscal conservatives that would normally support a Republican president didn't see any fiscal conservatism.  Bush isn't much of a conservative on any level, in fact.  So if the left hates you, and half the right doesn't claim you, what are your ratings gonna look like?  That's right, around 25%.

59 God, you guys make dorks look like superheroes. Don't you understand ANYTHING about economics - or are you so addicted to the smell of your own rotting corpse you want everyone to enjoy it.

We are not at RISK of a deflationary trap - for the most part the banking system failed in the summer of 2007, and just didn't start giving up the ghost until AIG ran out of capital to insure the risks of what had been normal bank-to-bank transactions. The reason the few banks still standing are doing so is because there aren't any bank-to-bank transactions going on anymore. Forget the home loans and credit cards - those are just the deathroes of a heavily peopled credit industry that doesn't know what else to do.

The point is this: we've been in a liquidity trap every since the summer, and at some point in the fall we settled - not into deflation, because we'd been in and out of deflation at various times over the last 3 years - into actual for god deflation that we haven't gotten out of since. We are NOT in the JAWS of deflation - the hyena of deflation has already digested parts of the US economy, as it has done in Iceland, England, France, Canada, Australia - Russia! - every single place on this earth that had a credit rating that wasn't called China or Saudi Arabia.

You want to know how difficult it is to get out of a deflation trap? Japan went into a liquidity trap in the 1990s - not a deflation trap, just a liquidity trap - no significant amount of credit available to finance new ventures and compete with inefficient outmoded dinosaur corporations and other economic models. So those dinosaurs survived, and the Japanese 'adjusted' - all the way pass a negative GDP into becoming a debtor nation - and they have not come back since.

(See - one way of avoiding a deflationary trap is to have such a shitty economy for so long prices have already hit rock bottom.)

Again, Japan - which has been in a liquidity trap for so long their population has adjusted to crappy salaries and wages, no growth, no innovation, and no investment in infrastructure and 'eased into' effective deflation over time - cannot get out of the trap theyve been in for over 15 years now - more than 3 full old-fashioned "business cycles". There are no more business cycles in Japan now - it's flat all the time.

But deflation, once fixed in [and to some extent it already is fixed in - having already eaten fairly significant parts of the traditional US economy, like the auto industry and the support systems for it], is far more voracious and despairing - and no one actually knows where bottom is, because once the US has made its reputation for not honoring its currency - - we'd be in that boat now but for China and Saudi Arabia being too scared shitless to demand it - - then the rest of the world that uses the US dollar as a benchmark no longer bothers ...
and we're instantly Borneo without the resources.

So go get your friggin useless guns - could help you knock off a grocery store or two before the US army and state militias come in and seize it or kill you to secure civilian order.

A reasonable person might actually urge that you have been misinformed by your 'leaders', and that you should actually be demanding the morons you guys voted for to gett their fingers out of their eyes, ears and butts and actually try to help save the country by at least getting out of the frickin way. So for what it's worth, I'll do that now - but I really think you folks are just too far gone & the rest if society should pull the plug on you.

-didn't pass permanent tax cuts, instead using them as a political tool

-pushed for government expansion

-named Teddy as his best pal after Putin and whichever Mexican president had time off from looting Mexico's treasury.

-named his pals to the Supreme Court till his betters smacked him up the side of the head.

-so aside from Carter, Clinton and Hussein, he was a piss poor president who didn't have the balls to rescind Clinton's executive orders or issue an executive order to drill in ANWAR for national security reasons.

-didn't expand our military in any signifcant way.

In short he acted as mentor for McCain and the grave digger of the GOP.

He sucked.

77 As long as you morons are in denial - about economics, banking, the role of currency in fiscal policy, global warming, the environment in general, evolution, more generally science - you know, real flatearther cromagnon stuff - you still have to admit the president has a pretty good sense of irony in crediting Republicans with - hold on to your sphincters - having "good ideas"! What a kidder! Your heroes? With "good ideas"? Jeez that's great. Does he have more? Are you kidding? He's got Rush and Hannity, Dooceybag, Kristol, der Kraut, Gerson, 40 of your top "geniuses" in the Senate, 177 of your most uprightstanding tools Congress has ever seen - there's no END to the material. And that's without browsing the posts and comments section at AOSHQ. A goldmine of inanity - an absolute friggin' goldmine. So we can all look forward to years and years of laughs.

DD, you would have made an even more fantastic Goebbels - raving of the helplessness of your enemies, causing them to falter in the face of history.

Wait, did I say fantastic?  I meant even more retarded.

Yeah, you suck. You even make me, the Prince of Darkness, optimistic.

83 #76 Thomas Jackson:      Bush issued an emergengy Exective Order 2 or 3 days after the 2 hurricannes hit the gulf coast. Hurricannes Gustav and Ike were the reason gas prices dropped. The order stated that the EPA mandate blends were no longer in effect. I suppose I may need a drill to get this in your head.  Sometime around Sept 15 I told anyone who would listen that gas prices would start going down. I had no idea that 4 months later I would be buying gas for 1.35 a gallon. I cant see into the future but I urge you to look back 6 months in the past and prove me wrong.

84 The DOE was set up by Jimmy Carter to get America to stop importing oil. I remember waiting in line to buy gas during the carter administration. We now import 70% of our oil after the DOE has spent about 5000000000 dollars since it was set up.  Local talk radio is already trying to figure how the oil companies are screwing them. I dont want a barrel of and dont give shit how much one costs. I have not seen one economic advisor explain why gas dropped. I buy gas by the gallon. I  wish someone could tell me Im wrong. I would be willing to listen.
