| Rasmussen Poll...Support For "Stimulus" Continues To ErodeOnly 37% support the plan and the number has declined steadily over the last two weeks. Extra fun bonus...50% of people think "is at least somewhat likely to make things worse rather than better". According to the poll there is a plan people seem to like.A stimulus plan that includes only tax cuts is now more popular than the economic recovery plan being considered in Congress. Forty-five percent (45%) favor a tax-cut only plan while 34% are opposed. Those figures reflect a modest increase in support over the past week.In addition to being popular a tax cut plan also has the added advantage of being likely to work. Alas, that's not the direction things seem to be moving. The cost of President Barack Obama's economic recovery plan now exceeds $900 billion after the Senate added money for medical research and tax breaks for car purchases. It could go higher Wednesday if a tax break for homebuyers is made more generous, even as centrists in both parties promise to clear away spending items that won't jump-start the economy immediately. ...At the same time, centrist senators, including Ben Nelson, D-Neb., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, are seeking to cut tens of billions of dollars from the legislation. They're operating with the blessing of Democratic leaders, who hope a successful effort could attract some GOP votes for Obama's plan. It's really amazing, they are adding costs while talking about cutting costs. It's almost as if they are just throwing shit against the wall with no real plan. What could go wrong with that kind of strategery? Comments1

$900 billion and counting. I predict that the wrangling to get "tens of billions!" of dollars will succeed and the stimulus only be for $1.14 trillion.
By the way, Australia seems to be doing the same liberal 'stimulus' panic bill with opposition by the recently deposed conservatives. So that's two economies down the drain... Posted by: t-bird at February 04, 2009 11:44 AM (FcR7P) 6

This poll is obviously racist. But you have to forgive the folks in the areas Rasmussen interviewed, since they seem to like Fox News. They are simply clinging to their wallets and economic theories, and to antipathy for politicians who think money grows on trees.

It could go higher Wednesday if a tax break for homebuyers is made more generous,... Can we get this over with and just have the Government tell everyone what to buy, where to work, and who to vote for? Actually, the MSM is doing a pretty good job of that last item. But that Rasmussen crowd is gonna need a stern talking to. Posted by: George Orwell at February 04, 2009 11:51 AM (AZGON) 13

The king of Hope is turning into the merchant of Fear WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Wednesday the recession will turn into "a catastrophe" if the economic stimulus is not passed quickly, lobbying anew for the plan as its price tag climbed above $900 billion and drew more criticism. The president rejected several complaints about the plan, including arguments that tax cuts alone would solve the problem or that longer-term goals such as energy independence and health care reform should wait. Obama opposed such piecemeal approaches. Instead, he argued that recalcitrant lawmakers need to get behind him, saying the American people embraced his ideas when they elected him president in November. Kneel before Barry!!! No plan is perfect, and we should work to make it stronger," Obama told reporters at the White House. "Let's not make the perfect the enemy of the essential. "A failure to act, and act now, will turn crisis into a catastrophe and guarantee a longer recession, a less robust recovery, and a more uncertain future," he said. "That's why I feel such a sense of urgency about the Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Plan." Don't ask silly questions. Just obey Barry!!! Posted by: TheQuietMan at February 04, 2009 12:54 PM (1Jaio) Posted by: polynikes at February 04, 2009 12:56 PM (m2CN7) 49
I'm so torn on this...I'm glad the bill is slowly dying, or at least morphing to a more effective (or less ineffective) version, but if it actually works to some degree, the country will benefit in the short term but Obama gets the credit and is re-elected to cause untold problems down the road. If liberals get to pass their dream bill, the economy tanks and the US suffers for a while, but (hopefully) conservatives can rally, get the congress and presidency sooner and have to balls and mandate to correct things for the long term.
Posted by: Grimaldi at February 04, 2009 12:59 PM (PwKiP) 50
And oh how I wish they would stop referring to EVERYONE as the American people. In my not so humble opinion, being born in this country doesn't make you an American, it makes you a citizen of the United States (citizen originally being capitalized but they screwed that up in the 14th amend.). Being an American requires a certain spirit and it's not the kind of spirit that votes for someone because they promise to steal someone else's money to pay for your healthcare etc.
