A Drunk Pilot or Mass Psychosis?

Fly the friendly skies: Aeroflot passengers refused to let their plane leave because they believed the pilot was drunk.

His slurred and garbled comments ahead of a flight from Moscow to New York convinced passengers that he was drunk. When he apparently switched from Russian into unintelligible English, fear turned to revolt.
Flight attendants initially ignored passengers' complaints and threatened to expel them from the Boeing 767 jet unless they stopped "making trouble". As the rebellion spread, Aeroflot representatives boarded the aircraft to try to calm down the 300 passengers.
One sought to reassure them by announcing that it was "not such a big deal" if the pilot was drunk because the aircraft practically flew itself.

Eventually, the pilot was persuaded to come out of the cockpit (he refused for a good hour) and when he did the passengers described him as unsteady with bloodshot eyes. He protested that he was not drunk, but they demanded that they get a new pilot even after he promised not to touch the controls (there were three other pilots in the cockpit). In fact, they decided that they wanted four new pilots. After a few hours Aeroflot finally agreed, but they're still sticking to their story:

An Aeroflot spokeswoman said that tests had revealed no trace of alcohol in the pilot's blood. She blamed "mass psychosis" among passengers for the decision to replace the crew, although the company later issued a statement saying that Mr Cheplevsky could have suffered a stroke just before the flight.

2 The did the right thing. I'm not afraid of flying, but I admit that if my pilot was slurring his words and refusing to come out of the cockpit, I'd be revolting too. "It flies itself" is not a concept I want to hear outside of a Transformers movie.

Well, that's the point where, if I were a passenger, regardless of my previous stance, would demand a refund and never return.

Okay, I can buy it if there are no complications and there are three other pilots to cover. On the other hand, it's mind-numbingly unprofessional, and it only deepens my suspicion that this is a sort of standard practice and that the complicit parties (entire plane staff) shouldn't be trusted to keep me alive.

6 After learning about Super Pilots like Capt. Sully, I think everyone would have died if he was drunk. So, I'd have to vote to get rid of the motherfucker because you never know what's going to happen mid-flight. I wouldn't have replaced the whole flight crew though, that's overreacting.

8 It's an ambiguous situation at best.

There is a problem that proceeded the passengers' actions, however. The problem is that airlines and other companies that hire such critical personnel whose performance is dependent upon being sober and awake need to implement an alternative to drug testing. The pilots should take simple hand-eye coordination and dexterity tests before every flight. If they fail, they shouldn't be allow to fly. It wouldn't matter whether the failure is the result of booze, drugs, illness or plain old exhaustion.

10 When I flew into Moscow back in 2003, we had to pick up an Aeroflot Navigator to go with us on into Chita, Siberia. Being on a US Navy aircraft, we couldn't drink but I'll be damned if "Ivan" was sitting on the radar cabinet slugging away Russian Standard vodka (which if you can get is damn good vodka)! That was only the Navigator. I take a very dim view of drunk pilots or ones that violate the 12 hour rule from last bottle to brief time.

A 767 is a fine bird, but any aircraft that you trust to fly itself is asking for an accident.

If you wouldn't get in a car with a driver whom you assume drunk, why would you get into an aircraft, where the chances of survival are even lower in an accident?

According to Janes, the 767 has an operating crew of 2 (pilot and copilot/navigator/radio operator, I suppose), plus an observer's seat and an optional second observer's seat. Presumably the 2 additional pilots are there to relieve the first 2 on such a long flight, allowing them time to sleep. If one of the 4 were drunk, then somebody would have to be at the controls for longer than safety rules allow. If another pilot were to be incapacitated then the situation would be even worse.

I vote for replacing not just the pilots but the entire staff of Aeroflot. Preferably in mid-Atlantic. :-)

Aeroplot suggested that the pilot may have had a stroke, and then suggested that the passengers were hysterical. It doesn't matter if it's the pilot's fault that he's mentally gone; he should not have been flying. If the paying passengers all agree that the pilot needs to go, then the pilot needs to go.

31 I'm not getting the mass psychosis thing. If he was slurring whether from a stroke or drunkeness then he was unfit to fly. I appears (based on the flight attendants statements) that Russia has lower standards for pilot behavior but that doesn't mean the passengers should. Good for them.

If he wasn't drunk or impaired he wouldn't have hold himself up in the cockpit. He would have gone out and calmed the passengers fears by speaking and appearing rational.

And when they say "Aeroflot spokesman" I assume the readers here know that a PR presentation is being made. DUH!

Either way, I wouldn't ride in a car with someone that stupid; much less in a plane.

Ref the Flight 593 link. I recently watched the "Air Crash Investigation" episode on that flight. Another one of those planes that would almost fly itself. There are no planes that Aeroflot can't crash if they put a little effort to it.

53 Aeroflot is fun. I flew them from East Berlin to Moscow as part of a student exchange during the Cold War years. The pilots had been ferrying troops in and out of Afghanistan (after the Mujhads got Stingers), so the landing in Moscow was a combat descent. We went from 30,000 feet to the tarmac in the space of a horizontal mile, it seemed.

Stroke or drunk, he can't fly the plane competently. The 767 might practically fly itself, but pushing the wrong button could disengage the autopilot or change other settings. I think Aeroflot figured the co-pilot would perform the takeoff, put it on autopilot, and hope the captain had slept it off by the time the plane entered NY flight control. This may be common with Aeroflot and other foreign airlines except this time the captain made the mistake of mumbling over the PA while the plane was still on the tarmac.

I once started a passenger revolt on an airplane by accusing the pilot of being a witch. Would've worked too, except he passed the dunking test.

Seriously though, we live in an age where airplane passengers are pretty quick to express their reservations, or beat the crap out of a would-be terrorist if needs be. No more Rawhide Roundups by airliner staff on planes, at least for quite awhile.

"State induced learning" - I got money that says the pilot went through flight school drunk; thus, the only way he could possibly fly the aircraft is totally hammered - sober he wouldn't know how to fire up the turbine.

The Mythbusters tried this and even the novices were able to rate them basically as well as the hired vodka expert. Filtering made no difference.
