Lynch assures he'd appoint (R) to replace Gregg

The check is in the mail, I promise to respect you in the morning, etc, etc.

...Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader in the Senate, said he has Gregg's assurances that New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch would appoint a Republican to Gregg's seat....

1 Well this sucks. Gregg MUST know THIS appt in Commerce is part of the WH plan to stick this porkfest on the GOP as well as the DEMS...also VT GOP GOV is doing a photo op in the Oval saying HE supports the stimulus as well, they are trying to dirty the GOP hands on this disaster and Gregg needs to just say no....

2 The person on the short list has already declared that she will not run for the seat in 2010...this is a joke.

Take it from a citizen of NH, Gregg is a JOKE. It's no surprise that Obama feels way ok with the appointment.

Can you say RINO?

11 A stroke to his over inflated ego? If he stays in the Senate, he's facing a very tough re-election, not a shoe in. It's being reported that both congressmen from NH, Hodes and Shea-Porter are interested in running for the seat. That kind of name recognition is deadly to the Republicans. Look what Shaheen just did to Sununu.

Posted by: hmmmm at February 02, 2009 10:06 AM (zplc6)

Really there isn't all that much McConnell can do though.  If Obama chooses Gregg, then its his to accept.  Then you're at the mercy of the governor, who would likely choose a RINO or a democrat who had switched party affiliations to get in an election, if he follows with his assurance.

And if he doesn't,  well then it becomes a talking point.  Partisan politics, deceit and lies from the democrats, broken promises.

So we'll end up with a nominal republican or the dems will be handing a bat for us to swing with.

30 Why would Gregg think this is a step up?

The first time they need a patsy or scapegoat or he doesn't polish BO's knob properly, he's gone.

Senate's a much better bet, especially if the R's hold the line.

31 As a resident of the Granite (cum marshmallow) State, I can state for certain that Gregg is, indeed, a tool--especially if he thinks Lynch's word means much of anything (not that he likely cares, mind you, since he is, in all likelihood, going to lose his seat in 2010 if he sticks around the way NH is trending for the past decade or so).

(On a side note: thank you, Massholes, for fucking up your state and then bringing the contagion north and destroying what was once a proud, independent, state.)

I live in NH. Gregg is from an old family here. His dad was also a player on the national level.  Gregg does have more honesty than most of the Senate. He is a quality guy. His wife was kidnapped a few years back, after 2 men forced into the DC home and beat her. She was able to talk them into taking her to a bank, and saved her own life.

Gregg won the lottery here a few years back, as well. He was very embarrassed about it, as he is a millionaire.

Gregg is a HUGE loss..if he takes the job. I don't have any idea who Lynch would appoint, unless he picks Sununu, who just lost his seat.  He would know that Sunnunu is likely to lose in 2010....again.

You cannot count out the possibility that things will be so bad by 2010 that the R's might actually have a chance.

It is THE POLITCAL PLAY OF THE YEAR...other than Burris.

Obama is a very shrewd con man, and knows where to play the game. He and Blago are cut from the same cloth, this makes it so obvious.

Posted by: ford at February 02, 2009 10:40 AM (Ki7fm)

39 According to the link, the NH Gov wants Gregg's senate seat for himself, so he's going to appoint either the weakest possible Republican, or someone who will just be a placeholder until he runs for it in 2010.
