| Some Senate Democrats Balking at Obama's "Stimulus" Bill?Republicans appear to have the support of some Democrats, including North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad, head of the Budget Committee, and Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson. "As it stands it would be very hard for me to vote for this package, because I don't think it is fully targeted, timely and temporary," Conrad said. "I think there is widespread dissatisfaction with the package that came over from the House."My own cynical self says the Dems are weighing the impact of the Republican resistance, and Sunday (Superbowl Sunday, golly, I wonder why the goddamn thing had to ride over this particular weekend?) is a great time to try to slide this thing down our collective gullets. Still, the solid Republican vote in the House with a dozen Dems made an impact. And the right tone is being set this Sunday prior to Monday. The argument is being cast now as "we're spending a bazillion dollars for what, ignoring root causes and oh by the way, we better fuckin hurry this shit along". As has been noted previously, there's a huge shift in polling. That in and of itself is encouraging. Sorta. Ok, not much but I need this. UPDATE: McConnell is casting this as "it could die". Could it? Comments1
Anyone for the theory that they put that shit in there for the sole purpose of having it written out as a "huge bipartisan compromise"? Some Dem senators might be sweating that the GOP won't filibuster or move over and they'll still pass it as is.

Usually this is Congresscritter talk for, "I want a bit more cash for my state/district piled in before I'll sell out my vote." Not that I wouldn't love to cling to the slightest glimmer of hope right a long with you. I'm just terminally pessimistic about anyone with a (D) after their name (or names that end in raham, cCain, pecter and a few others) Posted by: ef at February 01, 2009 05:08 PM (98P79) 3

Meanwhile, John Effin Kerry says the stimulus needs to be bigger.

Of course it's going to die. A new bill will be hammered out so that enough Republicans can also put their snouts in the trough, then this little piece of Kabuki Theater will end with Repubs selling out to the Great Uniter.

Do we have to keep calling it the stimulus or even "stimulus" bill? I so enjoyed the alternate name for the amnesty bill. How about "extremely large pile of horseshit" bill? Though donkey shit would be more apt. Posted by: MamaAJ at February 01, 2009 05:27 PM (X6Zdh) 14

I kind of figured this might happen. So, we have two new football teams: the Blue Dogs Dem's and the Obama Shit Brains. On the other side we have the Rush Freedom Fighters and the McCain Reach Arounders.

As bad as all this is, what frightens me more than anything else is that we have the same morons in charge of the ship who helped get us here in the first place. Don't you usually fire the guys who drove the company off the cliff and get a new team with new ideas in the real world? It may be true that no one but the government has any money at all, but isn't the root cause of the problem bad loans, and the fact that no one knows who has what because of the way they were sliced and diced and packaged up and sold? I had some confidence in Bush's team and a lot of hope they could at least arrest the freefall. And it seemed to be working. But after they threw hundreds of billions at the wall hoping something will stick - it hasn't! What are we in for? It seems like it is becoming increasingly clear that we are headed towards a real Depression that might be the same or worse than the last one. I reread the Grapes of Wrath in honor of our market crash and ate some SPAM (which was created for those days) and I must say I don't really like either. The Jews are about to bomb Iran, unrest is spreading in Russia and Eupora, third world poverty is grinding down her poor people .We are not going to like the next few years. Let us hope this man is wiser than he sounds so far. Shalom Posted by: 72VIRGINS at February 01, 2009 06:04 PM (cf+ib) 24
BTW, it turns out that a good way to frighten one's spouse is to sigh out loud that people are not cooperating in your visions of donkey poop. Who knew? Posted by: MamaAJ at February 01, 2009 06:10 PM (X6Zdh) 25
I think it is going to die. face it, alot of the crap in this thing came out pretty fast the last 4 days. I don't think Dems are going to vote against it because it is loaded with waste and is no way a 'stimulus"-they will vote against it to save their own ass but say its because of the pork. Obama is covering his own ass with fakey "reaching out" empty gesture, but he only wanted "support" for the final bill, not input to it. He made sure the fake perception was that he is trying, even though it was after the fact the Dems ran amok writting it.This porkfest is all Pelosi, Reid, Obama and Dems but only Obama made an empty gesture to deflect blame, if and when there is. Dems know its a turd, they just don't want to own it now that it looks like they will. Know what's funny? Any Democrat in the Senate that bitches about how loaded up with waste this thing is and they can't possibly vote for it as is, are hanging all but 11 Dems in the House out to dry that voted for it!!! How sweet is that, they are screwing over their own party Posted by: Jody C. at February 01, 2009 06:19 PM (hphNR) 26
It will pass. Maybe not in its current form but there will be a compromise in which Republicans will agree to vote for it and then Obama can spin it as a bi-partisan deal as originally promised. Pretty much what kbdabear said at #1 but from my own angle. Or, the GOP could blow us away and kill this piece of shit with every last ounce of patriotism they have. I'm not holding my breath. Just read Gregg said he wasn't accepting the appointment unless the governor garaunteed his seat would be replaced by another republican. That he was staying loyal and would not be the one to let the 60 majority happen!! I love that Repubs not only got some spine but they are making it known what was really behind the appointment before Ego can spin anything of it Posted by: Jody C. at February 01, 2009 06:34 PM (hphNR) 29
Awww shit. I thought it was Gregg himself that said that but after following HotAir links to the full article, it was 2 republicans close to him that described this scenario. Still, it looks like this will be the way it plays out. I hope so Posted by: Jody C. at February 01, 2009 06:41 PM (hphNR) 30
When duh1 is reading a script he comes across as a mellifluous speaker and can instinctively impart a certain cadence to his words.
This METHOD of speaking is what attracted DemocRATS to duh1over, say, The Hildabeast. But his known history is 100% red diaper doper baby. Yet those folks are all either dead or incommunicado. He is steeped in the dialectic of class warfare and is a beneficiary of questionable academic bona fides. How, for example, does a professor of Constitutional law teach for twelve years and leave no published material in his wake? Where are his grades? Where are his classmates? Where are his friends? Where are his college instructors? He is a blank slate that anyone, right or left, can write on. Even his birth is questionable. He detractors are confounded and his supporters are near cult like in their adoration and non-circumspection. The whole scene has a scientology like patina about it....it.is.creepy. This will not end well. Posted by: torabora at February 01, 2009 06:43 PM (1rVdf) 31
I hope everyone has noticed how the commies all sounded like Jack Bauer; “It’s going to blow!!!!! We don’t have time!!!!! Must pass now”.
They didn’t want anyone to read the damn thing and most haven’t. I have gone through app 200pp of it and I haven’t found a single item in it that is worth spending one cent on, much less the billions they have allocated.
My feeling is that the people like McLame and Grahamnasty are going to get some minor cosmetic change to the bill and then give their old “we must be bipartisan because we must have stimulus”. I say we should hound any cocksucker who votes for any part of this shit sandwich. Posted by: Vic at February 01, 2009 06:47 PM (f6os6) 32
While most people haven't read it, the buzz of what a turd it is is getting out there and fast and spreading. More and more on now looking at the online text of it or hearing about it from friends, nieghbors and co-workers. It has gone from an unknown to the public turd to a known turd. Coupled with no Republican cover in the House and probably no cover in the Senate, Dems are rightly getting nervous to hang their hat on it. It's shit, they know its shit and now so do the voters. Posted by: Jody C. at February 01, 2009 06:57 PM (hphNR) 33
Keep hammering your representatives! I e-mail Tiberi and Voinovich every day and tell them what I think in an encouraging way, for what it's worth. I know Tiberi probably listens and I know Voinovich probably doesn't. I don't give a fuck, I'm not stopping until I get satisfaction! Dammit! Posted by: ErikW at February 01, 2009 07:07 PM (hKtiw) 34
The best that could happen is that the entire GOP bails on this bailout, aka Comprehensive Delay Economic Collapse While Exacerbating Generational Indebtedness Act of 2009. The Donks have enough to pass whatever they want and the GOP should advertise that fact. The Donks want the GOP only to provide the figleaf, obviously, and have no intention of giving credit to the GOP for any success (should the impossible happen) except to use the word "bipartisan" when the inevitable, utterly predictable failure happens. The MSM, aka the propoganda arm of the DNC, will spin the Pelosi/Reid version gratis.
As far as the glimmer of hope of filibustering from the Right in the Senate? Ha! It'll never happen. I'll get my unicorn and skittles before that. The GOP needs 100% abandonment of this legislation and let the chips fall where they may. The Donks will be sweating bullets as the squandering becomes self-evident and the economy remains submerged. The GOP needs to universally reject such legislation and stand both on economic and philosophical principles. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at February 01, 2009 07:09 PM (sI5Ho) 35
I hope this bill passes ..... that's the only way the R's will have any chance at meaningful gains in 2010 when the 'stimulus' falls flat on its face. They can say 'I told you so'.
Senate republicans should voice their objections to this bill (but no fillibuster!) and then vote NO ...... that way if it fails to pass, it will be the Dems who caused it to fail. Posted by: Packetman at February 01, 2009 07:15 PM (bsgUt) 36
This cannot be allowed to quietly die. the Democrats must be visibly seen pulling this POS off the respirator due to opposition within their own party.

Turning a cyclical downturn into the wholesale mortgaging of future generations, and risking Zimbabwe-style hyperinflation, is not worth a few more seats in 2010. The GOP will have a good shot of taking back the House in two years even without this monstrosity passing. Posted by: Dave J at February 01, 2009 08:15 PM (qsGH+) 39

The Stimuliar Bill is super sized steaming pile of shit meant to pay back the stalwart leftists of the Demoncrat party but the dumbarsed Rethuglicans just won't get on board with paying back voter fraud and election day theft.
I bet Frau Pelosi is so distraught her face left is pulled tight as a drum head this weekend. F**k her and her merry band of nipped and tucked arse kissers. Here's hoping Frau Reid has a coronary or a stroke and has to retire to convalesce back to health. Darn it'd be wonderful to see a Rethuglican win his seat. *Sigh:Wishful thinking* Posted by: enter sandman at February 01, 2009 09:15 PM (zxaA2) 41
Maybe people should be wondering what strategy they are employing. This is turning out to be so ineffective as to be implausible. Could the entire bill be a fake out?
Posted by: Hmmmm at February 01, 2009 09:40 PM (zplc6) 42
It will pass but if it failed that would be so hilarious. The first big effort by the allegedly hugely popular savior of the world who brings change and a new type of politics to the White House led by pathetic failures Pelosi and Reid... and it bombs? That's just comic gold.
And they coudln't blame Republicans for a bit of it. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at February 01, 2009 09:52 PM (PQY7w) 43
"Could the entire bill be a fake out?"
No, its real. The Dems really believed the media hype that everyone voted for the socialists policies. The Dems are shocked that people really expected them to stop spending and lower taxes. Just goes to show that the problem was Republicans and not Conservatism. Posted by: David at February 01, 2009 09:54 PM (HAdov) 44
No it won't. It will never die. Sure the Obamabots will sacrifice a few billion here or there. Maybe the ACORN money will go or Pelosi's condoms but the bulk of the waste will be there and the rest will return.
Because Obama will continue to cut necessary programs. Defense down 10%, MAYBE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN 15%. . How about the FAA? Or maybe Homeland Security? How about a gas tax and a federal tax on utilities?
