Super Bowl Pre-Game Thread

Hey, if the NBC and ESPN can do 6 hour pre-game shows, why can't we?

Here are my keys to the game...Defense, minimize turnovers, maximize take aways and make the plays at key times. I think I'm ready for my multi-million dollar NFL analyst job.

So, who you got in the game?

Remember...President Obama is rooting for the Steelers and no doubt Maverick McCain is rooting for the Cardinals. Unfortunately, no matter what Donovan McNabb might think, the game can't end in a tie.

More:
You've got to be kidding....Pittsburgh schools will open 2 hours late to let kids sleep in after watching the game (which will be over by 10 or so). I'm guessing this more about hungover teachers than tired students.
Below the fold...not a cheerleader.

I don't know, I've been on a Judy Greer thing lately. So there.

But Johnny Maverick wants the Cards, and the Steelers are the AFL team....

I'm so conflicted.

Who does the Saracuda want to win????

10 I prefer John Madden's: "If you're a Kurt Warner...." construction.

And, if you want to be a sports interviewer, remember never to ask questions, just issue the command: "Talk about the...."

"Talk about facing your old teammates...."

46 Seven year olds have a inclination to get up about seven in the morning, whereas teens can't get up before ten.  It's got nothing to do with laziness, it's the way kids grow.  Teens need ten hours of sleep, and they won't fall asleep until around midnight.

I remember having to get up before dawn every winter through high school.  In the spring, the sun would finally come up by the time I was at the bus stop.  And then daylights savings time would put me in the dark again.

If the schools gave a damn, they'd change their schedule.

"They (AZ/Pit) have to avoid 3rd & long - you know, 3rd & 8, 3rd & 10. You can't win the Super Bowl like that."

Is this the result of the 24 hour news/sports/NFL cycle? Pleeeeeze let this game start!!!

I suppose that probably put a smile on Olberman's face.  He would have added something like 'on a illegal mission, in an illegal war, on their way to murder innocent civillians....'

Think of how much more fun you'd have if they ran a memorial next year on the tragic death of Keith Olbermann. Recounting the sad story of how Bob Costas, suffering a psychotic break due to anti-depression medication, killed Keith with his bare hands on live television and consumed his liver during the 2009 Super Bowl pregame talkfest. You know the routine: the sad music, the video tributes to Keith from beloved athletes and celebrities, the collage of photos documenting Keith's triumphs in the cutthroat world of media, the sober voice over telling us how great the Olbermann was. Rack focus on the crying little people in the stands as Keith's image hovers ghost like over all in the foreground.

Okay, this may be a dead horse but I wanted also t comment on those whining about Arizona not "deserving" to be in the game.I thought about it a little and my focus was on wild card teams, on the one hand and #1/2 seeds (bye week teams) on the other. (Years represent the seasons the Super Bowl capped.)

1997: The Broncos defeat the Favre/White-led Packers, ending years of tiresome NFC dominance in the Super Bowl. Oh, but they were a wild card team, so they sucked and shouldn't have. John Elway and Terrell Davis, you are not worthy.

1998: Broncos play the 14-2 #2-seeded Falcons, who clearly deserved to be there. Oh, the Falcons got blown out. Glad no wild card teams made it,; otherwise it would have been really boring!

1999: The Titans, a wild card team, take it to the last minute against one of the best offenses ever seen, the Kurt Warner-led Rams. The Titans clearly should not have been there! What a horrible game --no turnovers by either team; I hate that!

2000: The Giants, after a dominating NFC Championship performance, returned to the Super Bowl. Too bad the Ravens were a wild card team; it turned out to be a blowout. Oh, wait: it was the Giants who got blown out!  Sure, the Ravens were season-long one of the best defenses in NFL history, but they should have won their division, damn it!

2002: We get a clash of division winners here. No wild cards ruin the Super Bowl. It's still a blowout.

2005: Another playoffs, ruined by a wild card team!

2007: The sweetest. Everyone was ready to coronate the Patiots a la Obama, then those wild-card stinkers the Giants had to ruin it all. The Patriots ran up the scores like assholes for most of the season, then get their payback when it hurt most (I swear, Seau looked like he was crying). Usually instant karma is the best, but in this case it was good for it to simmer for a couple of months.

My whole point is: it matters not the seeds of the players in the Super BOwl when it comes to predicting the excitement of the game itself.

Posted by: logprof at February 01, 2009 05:24 PM (tjUml)

154 Oh yeah, and for the soccer fans: I can appreciate some parts of the game (enough to tune into the World Cup at least), but watching a soccer match is like super-extended foreplay with no guarantee of a payoff.

Posted by: Jake Was Here at February 01, 2009 06:39 PM (XECam)

163 See?  This is what you want to do.  You want to get the ball early and move it down the field.  And you want to put points on the board if you can.  This will help you get momentum in the game.  That's the key.  If you get them momentum in the game then it's easier to move the ball up and down the field. What Pittsburgh needs to do is keep the Cardinals from moving the ball down the field and they'll keep the momentum in the game.
