| Britain Awakens? The laws have gone so topsy-turvy in Merry Olde that the very act of defending yourself from a mugging, rapist, or other attack, using whatever you happen to be holding, could land your ass in jail if it was determined you were originally carrying the item to be used as a weapon. Even defensively. In other words, if you happen to be carrying an umbrella you better hope it's raining when you get mugged. Or else beating off your attackers with it is a crime. The criminals who attacked you will get out of the stir long before you do. The dramatic spike in violent crimes in Britain since enaction of their gun ban has gotten very little press coverage here in the US. Very strange, for such a gun loving nation as ours. You'd almost think the major press was at odds with public sentiment. It takes a lot of built up trouble before conservatives stage protests. We just don't do it unless we're pushed to the wall. We're not so good with papier-mache and public tantrums. Video below. Thanks to Mrs. Michael for the tip. Final thought: Progressives are fighting for the complete eradication of Conservative ideals. Conservatives are fighting for some illusion of 'balance.' Comments1

I saw it a few days ago . When they chopped through the receivers of some one's heirloom weapons I cringed, when they sawed through the receiver of a Browning A-5 it made me fuckin' nauseous. Handguns are quick, easy to shoot, and lethal. If your good. If your not good, or quick, be at least lethal with a shotgun. 12 guage, 3 inch mag goose or larger shells. best home defense weapon to have. They wont penetrate most walls in direct fire if you miss your target ( 357 mag will go through most walls, and accidently kill yer next door pet) They do however, Shred at a close range. Do you know that investigators for Child Protective Services, IN TEXAS, are under this same bullshit "umbrella rule". That's state policy. In TEXAS, morons. It isn't coming to a country near you, it's IN a state near you. And you can take it for granted that if it's in Texas, it national policy. We're there.
An investigator for CPS cannot carry a weapon of any kind and neither can they carry anything that might, on the off chance, look like or seem like a weapon. They send investigators into the field to check up on serious creeps who beat up, rape, and kill children, while demanding they go unarmed. And no baseball bat or pepper spray in the trunk, no matter the neighborhood or the drug dealers hangin' around protecting their turf. That would be unprofessional. Just investigate naked and rely on the cops (hahahahahaha!!!!) to help. It's already here. It's already happening. Prosecuters hammered an old guy in our county for fending off a burglary in just the same way. How DARE he shoot the little shits for breaking into his home? We need to wake up and smell the coffee. When I was stationed in England in 01-04, I had smuggled in a 9mm for home defense via a false bottom in my toolbox (thanks to a nice bribe to my movers).
Secretly, I hoped that I'd had a chance to use it (for home defense only of course) so as to spark an international incident (and to annoy the annoying Pubic Affairs officer who made me her love-slave). I started to get a wee bit nervous when there was a well-publicized abduction/murder in my crap town, and I figured as the local single American playboy I'd get the once over. Still, it's not a pleasant notion to think that your right to self-defense is thoroughly circumscribed, and it's certainly reflected in the culture there. I'd been in towns where the teens had riot over the city centre, and it was a lot more like The Warriors than Pride and Prejudice. Posted by: Big Fat Meanie at January 31, 2009 12:35 AM (n2eCn) 107

That tipping point gets closer every day. One day the folks pushing regular people out of their tracks are going to get some serious push-back, and maybe these mouth breather liberals will get the idea that the 2nd Amendment is to protect citizens from their gubmint, not the other way around.
Me? I can guarantee B&E on my little hovel would be a test of the burglar's insurance co-pay and the upper limits of his policy. Or a quick way to permanently retire. My survivalist sister used codes when she signed over some weapons to me in 1994 (scary times). The weapons were "flowers" and the ammo was "seeds." Now that I think about it, I haven't heard from her since the inauguration--wonder if she's gone deep cover....

Laura, GIGANTIC thanks for posting this very important vid. (If you were near me I'd maybe send food to your house everyday for like a month.)

Moderate Pub, since you're not being really an ass so far, I'll engage.
On the guns are for the militia part: go read the founding fathers' ideas on militia. It was every able-bodied citizen. The idea was to have a defense force that could be raised on the spot for any conceivable means. This includes foreign invasion all the way to fighting the government and other states (I think it was in the Federalist Papers where it's talked about a hypothetical situation where New York tries to re-acquire the territory in Vermont...). And as for your 'nobody needs them in modern society anymore' point: Tell that to my relatives. They live in the middle of nowhere, just outside a town that you pass through if you sneeze. There's two huge dangers out there. The first is the meth lab guys. The second is the dogs that city people dump out there that go feral and form big packs and attack people. There are times when you don't go outside without at least a .40 or shotgun just because of the dogs. Posted by: Ranba Ral at January 31, 2009 06:45 AM (VNi6L) 117
Poor Great Brit. I've always had a soft spot for them. I think many of us have similar thoughts as we are inextricably tied through history. I feel very bad that their once-great country has been usurped right before their very eyes. So many centuries of culture and liberty eroding away. That doesn't even address the Muslim creep happening there. They are on a fast track to complete and total socialism.

The Brits have one advantage, the monarchy. If one of those rakehell princes was to summon the people to the defense of their country and their liberties against a tyrannical treasonous regime.... We don't have that emergency ejection mechanism

The 'food comes from the store' non-argument ticks me off. A freezer full of free meat still means an awful lot to many people in this country. You have to be really clueless about your own country, not to mention divorced from the reality of how most people on the planet live, to actually, non-self consciously, leave that comment where other people can see it. Christ Almighty. Not everyone can live near an urban center. And even some who do, still enjoy hunting and providing for their families this way. Outlawing the traditional way that people provide food for themselves is the sort of cruel edict that one would expect stupid, pampered elites to dish out to ordinary people whom they do not understand. Posted by: lauraw at January 31, 2009 10:32 AM (/N2hz) 121
Just one question from a puzzled American:
Why he hell do you guys still put up with that parasitic bunch of useless trash calls itself "the royal family"? What makes these bozos better than anyone else? On the gun question, you don't hear about what we think about the second amendment over there because the mainstream media is violently hoplophobic, and just as they came all over themselves to curry favor with the "one", they do everything they can to circumvent the ideals of freedom. It's a disease called liberalism. Posted by: Stoney at January 31, 2009 10:52 AM (39Nmn) Posted by: Neo at January 31, 2009 11:25 AM (Yozw9) 123
This anti hunting crap is supported in Britain by the rich and famous too. Paul McCartney and his then wife Heather Mills bought and then posted patchwork land around their country mansion to prevent fox hunting by breaking up the path of the horses. Pheasant shooting is a 2 billion dollar business so having a shotgun is not hard there. The lesson for us from all this is, to me, 1) buy a hand gun and learn how to use it as soon as possible. Even if Obama fails to get them banned out right, he will eventually appoint Supreme Court judges who will reinterpret the second amendment to make their possession almost impossible outside the Mojave Desert. 2) Be willing to give money to lobbyists like the NRA. Politicians are still a cheap commodity. Posted by: mytralman at January 31, 2009 11:34 AM (26p91) 124
O.K. it's a joke. I love Guns almost as much as I love Fast Cars, Pussie, and Freedom. What is completely unfunny are the 4, count'um, four Supremes that really do think guns are not an individual right.

Moderate Pub has not apprehended that modern usage of the term "militia" does not define its use in the bill of rights when made into law.
Perhaps he will be disappointed when he find out what "well-regulated" means, as well. In the sense used, it meant well run and well supplied...i.e., well-armed. Posted by: SarahW at January 31, 2009 01:35 PM (r/1UT) 128
Good reporting on that video.
This happened a few years ago: The giant anti-fox-hunting-ban protest march was in 2002, and Tony Martin was released to a safe house in 2003. He never indicated any remorse for the shooting, which would have speeded up his release. Martin had, before the shooting, become obsessive about the ongoing burglaries at his farm. He had set up various booby-traps around the house, and would sleep clothed, with his boots on and gun by his side. There was a lot of sympathy for Tony Martin, and generally most people support the 'castle doctrine'. The Daily Telegraph had a campaign on his behalf, and to get the laws changed to protect the victims of burglaries and forced entries. Whether correctly or incorrectly, there was some temperance of the sympathy towards Martin because 1) He had shot the thief in the back, and 2) There was a suspicion that he was somewhat extreme eg. he'd previously shot someone who was picking apples in his yard (for which he lost his gun licenses), he'd fired his shotgun in an argument with his brother (no-one hurt), and he'd advocated rounding up and machine-gunning all the itinerant travellers* and gypsies, a sentiment which lent extra colour by the fact that he is the nephew of Andew Fountaine, the founder of the National Front (predecessor to the BNP - both fascist neo-nazi organisations). So, although many didn't necessarily like Tony Martin personally, they did support his position - no-one should be made to feel like a prisoner in their own home, a right to self-defense of self and property is innate, and that police were often no help at all. Brandon Fearon, the criminal who survived, went on to be arrested for heroin dealing (18 month sentence, 6 served). He got called back to finish the rest of his sentence after he was caught driving someone's car without permission or a license. He was arrested again for withdrawing £11,000 using stolen cash cards, and later bailed. He was then arrested again for causing public disorder at two pubs - given another 18 months of jail. Also, England's prisons are at full capacity, and the goverment neglected to increase capacity, even though it increased the number of jailable offenses by introducing new laws. The maddening leniency of the UK justice system towards dangerous criminals (and the obstructionism of the Crown Prosection Service, which often seems to be on the side of the criminals) is a common subject of conversation here. (For a policeman's take on such subjects, and policing in general: Nightjack's blog ) *: 'traveller' is a UK term - for a film depiction of a UK "traveller" community, see Brad Pitt's Micky & friends in Snatch (YouTube clip) Posted by: o.u. at January 31, 2009 01:48 PM (+3gz+) 129
I saw a 10" bladed, Winchester brand, Bowie knife with sheath at Dick's last night for $24.95. Big, wide sucker, with a big, shiny brass crossguard, and finger grooves in the wood handle. That's a very low price for an impressive political statement, and it comes with a Bowie knife too! The best thing about it: it is sure to offend the right people. I can imagine the reaction of a gray-haired, 250lb, lesbian, women's studies graduate, global warming believer, Obama supporter, patriarchy fearing, vegetarian, PETA contributing, socialist woman with her gray sweatshirt and black plastic, Buddy Holly glasses, seeing a white male with a 10" bladed, Bowie knife hanging from his belt. It would contradict every conceited, left-wing, communist, socialist, Democrat, anti-freedom belief she had. I think I might get it, cut the cheap blade off just so there's no possible weapons charge, just a sheath and handle to it, and then gauge people's reactions. It would send out a strong radar ping. I'd like to see what comes back, and how, and from whom. Counterrevolutionary subversiveness can be fun. Posted by: Chas at January 31, 2009 01:53 PM (1XTjz) 130

OK you're a vegetarian, fine. I can respect that. I'd respect it a lot more if you left off with the comments implying that everyone else could have the same experience being one as well. Not all people are veg, not all want to be, not all can. But I'm not going to go into a list of reasons to defend the position I state here other than: freedom of choice. Speaking of choice, are you aware there are a lot of places in your own country that do not have grocery stores? And that some who have small shops a piece of meat would cost them a month's wages? Posted by: fireweednectar at February 01, 2009 04:14 PM (vM7Ix) 136
I don't place human qualities on animals so you won't have to worry about me having "touchy feelings" for them. They're just tools or food to me. I'd feel bad if my dog died, but only because he provides comfort to me, not because I think he's equal to humans in some way. Posted by: digitalbrownshirt at February 01, 2009 06:57 PM (SZOS3) 137
fireweednectar,
What experience? By "easily live" i haven't implied it won't be a sacrifice to refuse killing animals for food. I also do not want to be a veg, I would love for example to have an occasional Big Mac (i really enjoyed those before) and i do not have any social or personal benefits (which i suspect are a sole foundation of a "progressive" celebrity-style vegetarianism) from my way of life (there are no vegetarians among my social surrounding). I just think that killing an animal doesn't worth it. You may understand it if you own a pet. It's really all about whether one seriously values animal life or not. 99,9% of people who consume meat (by buying it or hunting) are not exactly tormented by their conscience, it's not like they have some real expectation of some significant damage to their health or income and thus are making a hard choice to consume meat. They just don't care much and don't think about it much, but at the same time when in one way or another they are confronted with the price of their way of life, they realise that it's wrong and all sorts of excuses come into play (it's natural, it's healthy and so on). And the same goes for all the nuances like the lack of appropriate stores in some areas - they may be real, but they do not account for 99,9% of the problem, which is general indifference to the plight of animals (with some exception of cats and dogs). About "freedom of choice": i mean no offence but there is no real argument here. The only way it can be given a coherent shapes is this: it's wrong to restrict someone from fulfilling his desires, unless such fulfilment is hurting others. I agree with that but that "unless" part negates the general freedom to kill an animal to anyone who values, besides a human life, an animal life (in general or some particular animal). Try killing someone's pet and then argue with the owner that while you're sorry for destroying his property and willing to pay for it, killing any animal and eating it is your freedom of choice which he should respect - you may pay dearly for such a stunt. Ok, in other words you don't care at all about your dog: it has the same status for you as a pillow - it gives you comfort but the second it becomes more of a liability (say the dog gets ill) you'll dispose of it without any feelings and get yourself a new one. I hope you realize that with such an attitude you're in the tiny minority of pet owners. Also i guess you're aware that treatment of cats and dogs which is logical continuation of your system of values is called "animal cruelty" and is a criminal offence. That is thousands of people each year are heavily fined while some even go to jail for the behaviour you see nothing wrong with. Since i guess you care for humans why don't you voice your opinion for such a grand injustice when people are being screwed for nothing?
