Hypocrisy Overload...Obama Attacks Greedy Wall St. Types With Noted Tax Evader Mistake Maker Next To Him

You can't make this crap up (sorry, it's a NY Times link)

President Obama fired a warning shot at Wall Street on Thursday, branding bankers “shameful” for giving themselves $18.4 billion in bonuses as the economy was spinning out of control and the government was spending billions to bail out many of the nation’s most prominent financial firms.

Speaking from the Oval Office with Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner by his side, Mr. Obama lashed out at the industry over a report, compiled by the New York State comptroller, Thomas P. DiNapoli, which found that over all, financial executives received the same level of bonuses as they had in 2004, when times were more flush.

It was a pointed and unusual flash of anger — if a premeditated one — from the president, and it suggested that he intended to use his platform to take a hard line against excesses in executive compensation.

This is one of the most annoying parts of bailout mania (and there are a lot of them). Normally I'd be all over this type of populist crap but when they've already gotten hundreds of billions of tax payer dollars and may be in line for even more, it's kind of hard to defend them.

Still, it's a little too much to listen to Obama blather on about 'shameful' behavior sitting next to Geithner. Of course, it's rather impolite to note this so the MSM won't bother doing that.

1 Just for fun, go to iOwntheWorld dot com and look at the poster for Joe Biden's movie. I didn't tinyurl it so don't screw up the internet.

I love the caption of "shameful" on a picture with Obama pointing to Biden.

This picture deserves a caption-contest, but I'm on way home, so....dang.

10 That truly is the height of hypocrisy, calling the Wall Street execs "shameful". How many sweet deals has the asshat scored for himself and that ugly wife of his over his rather short political career? And yes, to have a tax cheat sitting beside him while he stated this is almost comical if it weren't so depressing. I hate this man and it's only been what -- one week since he's taken charge.

Geithner was born in Brooklyn, New York.  His father, Peter F. Geithner, is the director of the Asia program at the Ford Foundation in New York. During the early 1980s, Peter Geithner oversaw the Ford Foundation's microfinance programs in Indonesia being developed by Ann Dunham-Soetoro, mother of President Barack Obama, and they met in person at least once.

40 I usually don't worry about CEO compensation TOO much (though I do wonder if anyone is really worth $200 billion bonus - I mean, look at the great job they did on Wall Street and Detroit). BUT, if MY tax dollar is going to the bank, I DON'T want it going to some millionaire executive for running the place into the ground. Geithner is an outrage, but in this special instance... Obama is right.

41 I'm still waiting for a speech about how outrageous it is that Raines, Johnson & Gorelick made millions in profits at the two Fs by cooking the books, got sweetheart mortgage deals, assured us that nothing was wrong with the financial stability of the Fs , and used record millions of taxpayer dollars to lobby Congress to prevent any proposed regulations to rein them in from passing.

49 I know it is tough to get, but there are employees of wallstreet that have compensation made up mostly of bonus.  They might also have done well for their respective company and they were not the ones to screw everything up.  They deserve to be compensated as per their contract.  Separately, NYC is going to be hurting without wallstreet bonuses (see the NY Post article today), lots of taxes and lots of spending from wallstreet that is now gone.

"We are going to ban all earmarks," President-elect Obama pledged today after a meeting with his economic team, discussing the multibillion dollar stimulus package.

Mr. Obama made the promise carefully -- his definition of earmarks was "the process by which individual members insert pet projects without review."

So, we have a House bill that's currently as thick as "one of Norman Mailer's later novels", as Krauthammer put it, preventling anyone from reading the damn thing, let alone "review" it.

One of the questions I have is simply this:  are the firms that received the bailout money in the list with giving out the huge bonuses?  If so, outrage accepted and make 'em give that amount of money back to the government fund immediately.  IF the bonuses were done at firms not covered by the bailout, then screw your outrage obama - it's none of your stinking business - nor is it business of mine.

If the bonuses are paid by firms not under the bailout umbrella then one might as well have outrage for a sports team's star that just got a hundred million signing bonus or whatever or for a star that got paid a hundred million for a crappy movie.  It's called private enterprise, obamidiot.
