Rasmussen: Public Now Virtually Split on Stimulus; Support Among Independents Craters

"I won," he miscalculated.

Forty-two percent (42%) of the nation’s likely voters now support the president’s plan, roughly one-third of which is tax cuts with the rest new government spending. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 39% are opposed to it and 19% are undecided. Liberal voters overwhelmingly support the plan while conservatives are strongly opposed.
Last week, support for the President’s plan was at 45% and opposition at 34%.

...

Over the course of the past week, there has been little change in the views of either Republicans or Democrats towards the legislation. Seventy-four percent (74%) of Democrats support the plan along with just 18% of Republicans. Both those figures are up just a single point from the previous poll.

However, support among unaffiliated voters has fallen. A week ago, unaffiliateds were evenly divided on the plan, with 37% in favor and 36% opposed. Now, 50% of unaffiliated voters oppose the plan while only 27% favor it.

The Democrats were out of the White House long enough the public began to forget why they had long mistrusted them. They're being reminded.

Needless to say, full steam ahead on Republicans finally acting like Republicans. The polling is good political news, obviously. People tend to become invested in their opinions, so if a lot of independents currently feel that the "stimulus" is a waste of money and won't help the economy much and might hurt it, they will be resistant to changing that opinion when the economy recovers, as it of course will (at least at some point). Obama's going to have a hard time persuading them that resodding The Mall did the trick.

Republicans can't just listen to Rush Limbaugh? Okay. How about Democrats can't just listen to Robert Reich and Paul Krugman?

I had mixed feelings on Republicans proposing their own alternative -- hey, the Democrats usually didn't, preferring simply to snipe, so why break tradition? But they did, and they seem pleased with their work:

House Republicans have proposed an alternative that leaders say would create 6.2 million jobs for only $478 billion.

"What Member can't go back his or her District and explain: Rather than voting for a bloated bill, ... I voted for an alternative that would create twice the jobs at half the cost, and faster?" a House Republican leadership aide said. "That's why we didn't lose a single Republican and picked up 11 Democrats."

Here's Obama's counteroffensive:

Pushing back against the unanimous House Republican vote against President Obama’s stimulus plan, the White House plans to release state-by-state job figures “so we can put a number on what folks voted for an against,” an administration aide said.

“It’s clear the Republicans who voted against the stimulus represent constituents who will be stunned to learn their member of Congress voted against [saving or] creating 4 million jobs,” the aide said.

Not really all that effective. The public already knows we're in an economic catastrophe to rival the Great Depression (!!11!!!ELEVENTY!!!). This is known. This is baked into the cake.

What is not known is whether the Reid-Pelosi-Obama Budget Blowout Bonanza will help or hurt. Simply underscoring the dimensions of the greatest financial crisis of almost one hundred years does not do anything to advance the argument that the Reid-Pelosi-Obama plan is better.

I don't know the figures -- but with a trillion dollars to play with, what kind of a temporary break could the government give to businesses as far as their contribution towards the payroll tax? What percentage? It seems to me that if we want to create (or "preserve") jobs, jobs, jobs it might be smart to do so fairly directly by reducing the costs of hiring or keeping workers, at least for a few years.

Both items ripped from the headlines. Of Hot Air, of course.

Welfare for Illegal Aliens? Why Not? How does this help Michelle Obama's children?

3 And be sure to point out to all those new workers that they can get right to work so they can send in taxes to pay off the debt that we incurred getting them that job.

Hey, why not just cut capital gains to 0%?  That'd cost a lot less and produce a lot more.

Good. Then we can go back to those numbers over the next few years and remember the good ole days when unemployment was only in the single digits.

Republicans had better get on the ball about getting out their message as to why they opposed it, point out all of the bullshit pork in it and explain exactly why it won't help the economy. All of the idiots that listen to the MSM think this stimulus is 1.1 trillion dollars of hope and change that will

From what I have heard everything that conservatives managed to get squashed in the past few years is back in this abortion of a package. Not only are illegals to be able to get these “checks” but the SCIP bill they are smashing through as we speak restored illegal eligibility for that as well.

In addition, yesterday Demint was giving a speech on the floor and he said that some of the money would go to States that SCHIP is allowed for adults who have NO CHILDREN. That ain’t SCHIP.

What would be nice is if we had that much vaunted “free press” that would bring up all this stuff. Instead we have a bunch of ass kissing fawning shit heals who have sold their soul to the communists back in the Walter Durante days.

I'm curious to know what the Republican plan entails. I have my own stimulus plan. It's very simple and will be very effective: Give each state $1,000/resident to be strictly used to repair or build infrastructure. For example, Massachusetts would get about $4 billion to spend on roads, bridges, and airports. It would help to improve every sector in each state's economy. And it would only cost about $300 billion.

17 I can't help but notice how that nut graf is worded.  Starts with a number in support (42%), a fraction in opposition (1/3), and an ambiguous "rest" who want more govt spending.

Secondly, the fraction is incorrect; it's not 1/3, its 39% - 6 points more than 1/3.  In fact,  that number is closer to the 42% that the 1/3.

23 Just from a purely strategic point of view, even the RINOs in the Senate should all vote against this bill and try to get some bluedogs to come along.

They can actually block passage that way and truly have some power in the upcoming legislation. Otherwise, they're just an easy, skanky blowjob in the parking lot and will receive the same consideration in the future.

A Republican rejection in the Senate will give the Republicans true power. And show BO they won't just rollover. It's good politics *and* the right thing to do.

Chances of it happening with turdballs like Grahame and McCain: 50 to 1 against.

States already get plenty of money from the Fed.  They need to not be dumb during good times and put away a rainy day fund and stop over spending.  States that do it right get penalized by paying for this garbage.  Cut corporate tax rates in half.  Cut tax rates on savings and capital gains.  Stop taking money out of the economy to help the economy.

You know...it just dawned on me.  I know, I'm a little slow sometimes, but still...

A couple months ago, Joe Farah pointed out on WND the strategic color-shifting of the MSM when indicating Democratic versus Republican victory on electoral maps.  In the really not-too-distant past, for example, when the Democrat candidate won CA, it turned red, and when the Republican candidate won TX, it turned blue.

Without doing any actual research into the colloquialism, would this be where the phrase "blue-dog democrat" comes from?  They're a democrat, but they're pretty conservative, so they're a "blue" democrat...  But, now that the MSM exchanged the colors (to subconciously link the Republicans to Soviet Communists...no, seriously...), the phrase "blue-dog democrat" has lost its meaning, because now ALL democrats are blue...

Or am I way out in left field here?

34 Stimulus is so simple to implement, just declare a withholding holiday of X weeks with option to continue if things do not improve.  People get money in two weeks, not years.

No massive Federal effort, relatively easy to implement at the payroll level.  People's incomes increase, so the stimulus would "pay-back" the budget in some magnitude within a year.  Don't muck it up with corporate tax incentives, etc. - just a simple, easy to understand solution.

McCain and Forbes are the only ones who could present this.

39 At one point the Republicans suggested allowing people to pull their money out of IRA's without penalty to pay off homes, or college loans etc.  They need to reiterate that, as well as lifting the requirement that people 70 and older draw down their IRA's, which effectively forces them to sell their quality stocks into a falling market.

My Dad has been forced to sell stock from his IRA, and immediately buy it back into his brokerage account.  Not everybody has the cash to do that.

43 I always thought that "red states/blue states" was an attempt in the 90's to turn the tables on true-blue conservatives and label them rednecks. Liberals probably also thought that getting rid of their own 'red' label would mean everyone would overlook their socialism.

But reverse elitism made the plan backfire. I'll gladly call myself a red-neck to stick to the blue-bloods that fund the Democrats.

Yeah but that gets back to the old story about the 10 guys buying drinks at the bar and proportionally paying based on their tax status.  The people that are already paying zero don't get any of the benefit so they're all pissed off.  Its the same issue there was with the last stimulus package where people were getting back the $600 in taxes.  The democrats didn't want the people who made "too much" to get anything back, and wanted to ensure that people who hadn't paid anything did get something.

with $800B / $655,000 / working life
ya get

Rather than raising taxes by ~$10,000 / family to pay for this boondoggle, I suggest that it would be more beneficial to the general public to simply draft 1.2 million and work them over fifty years, or say,
draft 12 million and work 'em for five years.
