More Good News... Report: Iran Getting Close To Having Enough Enriched Uranium For A Weapon And The US Is Looking Forward To Talking To Them About It

Everything is AWESOME!

The London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies said that US intelligence estimates that Tehran halted work on its nuclear program is doubtful and that Iranian officials are eagerly working on developing nukes and other types of weapons.

"During 2009, Iran will probably reach the point at which it has produced the amount of low-enriched uranium needed to make a nuclear bomb," said Mark Fitzpatrick, who serves as a senior fellow at the think tank.

Tehran's continued development of long-range ballistic missiles - able to reach targets in Israel and other parts of the Middle East - are proof the Iranians are working on nuclear weapons, according to Fitzpatrick, who made the announcement today in London at the IISS's annual meeting of global military powers.

But have no fear...diplomacy is near!

In his first television interview from the White House last night, notably to the Arab network Al Arabiya, Obama made a similar appeal to Iran.

"I do think that it is important for us to be willing to talk to Iran to express very clearly where our differences are,” the president said, “but where there are potential avenues for progress. …And as I said during my inauguration speech, if countries like Iran are willing to unclench their fist, they will find an extended hand from us."

Also yesterday at the U.N., U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice made some waves by saying, "We look forward to engaging in vigorous diplomacy that includes direct diplomacy with Iran."

Interestingly, from that same article Hillary sounds slightly less excited about all of this than Obama and Rice.

"There is a clear opportunity for the Iranians as the President expressed in his interview to demonstrate some willingness to engage meaningfully with the international community," Clinton said. "Whether or not that hand becomes less clenched is really up to them. But as we look at the opportunities available to us, we're going to have a very broad survey of what we think we can do."

She added that whether the U.S. hand is extended is "really up to them [the Iranian leadership]."

Maybe it's just residual Hillary! mania but it seems she thinks the next move is Iran's where Obama and Rice seem to be saying the US will be making the first move.

Meanwhile...The spokesman for the Iranian government would like to take this moment of hope to remind you they haven't changed their mind about the Holocaust being nothing more than a "big lie".

15 When the bomb goes off, I'm going to stand up and yell "Leonard Bernstein!", just to see if anyone else gets the reference. That's assuming, of course, that I still have a tongue and vocal cords.

On the other hand, if they don't bomb Indianapolis at the end of May, they ain't bombing it at all. So once that's past, I'm in the clear.

I don't know about clenched fists but apparently in the US we've all unclenched our anuses because we are getting well and truly screwed.

What about the environment? It can't be good for the environment if Iran launches a nuclear weapon. Perhaps Al Gore should be sent to talk to them. If he could chart for them just how bad for the environment their nukes are I'm sure they'd agree never to fire them, right? right? riiiight.

Posted by: ParanoidInSeattle at January 27, 2009 03:11 PM (AJ4xq)

28 Iran is unlikely to hit Israel with a nuke since it it would commit itself to a Martian landscape for 10000 years.  But it could threaten Iraq, the Saudis, Kuwait, and the Gulf states, and even Europe with Russian assistance causing lots of turmoil in the oil markets ( benefiting the oligarchs and Putin, the 40 billion dollar man), as well as making terrorism against us much more likely.  No amount of "soft power" will compensate for this as we follow the One into our Frenchistic all appeasing  utopia where more than 50% of the population has some kind of government job and will never vote to threaten it.

Guess that's the end of it.  Israel has nothing to fear.  (Sura 2:29)

38 OK, that article is just goofy.

For the record, I hate the idea of Iran getting nukes as much as anyone here does.  So please don't think I'm sanguine, or another lefty dismissing this kind of story as right-wing paranoia.

However, the headline and the author's paraphrase don't match what the quoted expert says.

Headline: "Iran will have nuke 'this year': Think Tank"

Author's interpretation: "Iran will 'reach the point' this year where it will have enough enriched uranium to make a nuclear bomb."

Quoted think tank scholar: "Iran will probably reach the point at which it has produced the amount of low-enriched uranium needed to make a nuclear bomb."

Except that low-enriched uranium cannot be used in a bomb.  You need highly enriched uranium, which is a hell of a lot easier to make from low-enriched uranium than from natural uranium (we ourselves needed a two-stage process to complete the Manhattan Project on time).

So the key quote in this article is a little like saying Iran has enough iron ore to build a skyscraper.  The process goes more or less like this: turn uranium ore (yellowcake is especially good) into pure uranium oxide.  [Note that the Iranians seem to have run out of yellowcake--not a good sign.]  Turn uranium oxide into uranium hexafluoride.  Enrich to low-enrichment stage.  Enrich that to >85 or 90% U-235.  Reduce to uranium metal or, for lower efficiency but easier fabrication, convert it back to uranium oxide.  Now, given competent engineers, you can build your bomb.

The Iranians will probably get the bomb all too soon, and we won't like the results a damn bit.  I used to think they'd be crazy enough to use it on Israel; now I think it's likelier they'd hugely escalate the scale and blatancy of their support for terrorism, knowing we'd be basically unable to do anything about it.  Think of Pakistan run by the ISI.

But there's nothing in this article to say they'll have a bomb in a year.  They'll be a key step closer.

Posted by: JPS at January 27, 2009 08:52 PM (HSf+f)

39

Even once they have a bomb, that's still only part of the equation.  They need a reliable delivery system.  If the bomb is large, they're stuck with aircraft.  Good luck getting one from Iran to Israel - Israeli air defense would smoke it, assuming one of the other countries that got overflown didn't get it first.

Iran has missiles, but to use those, they'll need to minaturize their bomb.

Just having a bomb doesn't really give them that much of an advantage.  If they can demonstrate that they can deliver it reliably over distance, THEN they have an advantage.  Just having the bomb is basically an open invitation to bomb the bejesus (bemohammed (?)) out of them.

The Iranians will probably get the bomb all too soon, and we won't like the results a damn bit.

The Jews know that they cannot exist with Muslims who do not recognize their right to exist, without being attacked by them, and defeating them.  And Iran with a bomb will mean the highest, most ruinous oil prices we have ever see.  All they had to do was bark and the price went up.  If they get a bomb a whisper will do, and the world will fall at their feet.  And when they eventually share it with terrorists we both shall pay like never before in history.  So if you want Armegeddon just ignore and it shall come to you eventually as they try to bring back the Third Caliphate, whether you like it or not.  (Sura 2:29)

Posted by: 7HEAVENS at January 27, 2009 11:10 PM (vLBWk)

44 When, not if, when we are attacked, Israel is attacked, or both; don't let the DemStream Media even get a word in edgewise. Every casualty, every destroyed city, will be the direct fault of Hussein Pasha, the Democrats, and the Media.

Payback is a bitch.
