| Heh: Republicans Suggest Moving Gitmo Detainees to AlcatrazPelosi doesn't want to mess up the national park though. Perhaps he's not visited Alcatraz," Pelosi said of Young while displaying little sense of humor. "Alcatraz is a tourist attraction. It's a prison that is now sort of like a -- it's a national park." That explanation didn't stop House Minority Leader John Boehner from repeating the suggestion on Sunday, making that point that closing down Guantanamo by year's end may not be the best plan considering the recidivism rate of terrorist detainees is about 12 percent. "If liberals believe they ought to go, maybe we ought to open Alcatraz," Boehner, R-Ohio, told NBC "Meet the Press." Being reminded that Alcatraz is a national park, Boehner responded, "It's very secure."Anybody think she's ever visited there? It's gonna suck, being in the minority for a while (hell, it's starting to suck being what feels like a minority in the Republican party these days), but this is the kind of needling and prodding from the opposition that I enjoy. Perhaps I'm just being naive (and don't you find my naiveté refreshing?), but you take what you can. We can't beat em for a while, but surely we can dick with them some. And if the detainees riot there, can we shell them again? I hope so! Comments1

Although I'm really unhappy that the democrat/socialist agenda is front and center, I really don't mind being in the minority as a whole. The majority right now are sheeple, and I'm rather enjoying the fact that I can walk around with an air of intellectual superiority while the masses slaver over The One. I predict lots of eye rolling by conservatives in the short and long term. Posted by: shibumi at January 25, 2009 03:21 PM (tZB/c) 3
I think that's a terrific place for them, if they have to be here at all. The Dems and Nancy deserve them and it fits in with Obama's public works projects. The place is in serious disrepait (although I haven't been since the 70s) so there is serious work to do for idle hands. And they'd have to build a means of getting them fresh water. Then we can have Obama's private army patrol the place.

This looks like a good place to spend some of those infrastructure investments. It could all be solar powered, too. Has anyone checked with the tribes who assert ownership of that island? Because--call me a starry-eyed optimist--the combination of recession-proof prison guard jobs for a chronically unemployed minority with sovereign-nation status that is not a signatory to the Geneva conventions, terrorists (alleged terrorists, sorry) on parade, casino gambling and tax-free cigarettes, well, win-win. Kind of an Ohlone Branson. And a boost to SF tourism, which has been off. Posted by: comatus at January 25, 2009 03:28 PM (pUg4a) 8
Pelosi is such a dimwit. She's ready to waste hundreds of millions of dollars on heaven knows what else, but she won't use it for anything useful.
I say go for it, and I live here. One billion would put Alcatraz back in shape enough to hold the people at Gitmo, the most liberal Federal court is literally less than two miles away, and the town is literally crawling with leftist lawyers who would be wetting themselves for the opportunity to defend these poor, persecuted souls against the evil, evil government. The Republicans should pound this to death and force the Mafia Princess to admit publicly that she doesn't want these people anywhere near her actual constituency. Just stick them in the San Francisco city jail or Gavin Newsom's house.

I like this "Alcatraz" line. While unrealistic, it points out that closing the Gitmo detention center is also unrealistic.
It's also colorfol and bold. If he had just said, "Put them in Peoria" no one would have cared. Put them in Alcatraz!!!! Kudos to Boehner and his staff for coming up with that. More of this, please!!! Posted by: Indythinker at January 25, 2009 03:32 PM (WiIQi) 11
From an opposition party perspective, closing Gitmo is an issue that just won't stop giving. It has it's own life and doesn't require any help from our side. All we have to do is throw in a comment every once in awhile just as a little reminder.
Any suggestion on a practical aspect of closing Gitmo will evoke immediate squirming from someone on the left. Like Boehner's did for Pelosi. Sooner or later, everyone will realize that Obama is left with the same options that Bush had on Gitmo and will probably be forced to take the same decisions. But I guess he'll need a commission to arrive at that destination. On the other hand, Obama could just let all the detainees go free. There's that. Hey mates, if you want, we got some extra space available in our Arctic territories. Human rights groups would be much pleased given that the prison won't need any guards, guns, walls, barb wired, or much anything else. Just the great outdoors.
You won't have to worry about them escaping since it's over a 1000 miles in any direction to the nearest town with 10,000 people. With global warming and all, it should be like paradise up there for the desert people. Cheers Posted by: Phil from Canada at January 25, 2009 03:36 PM (AOOwS) 16
If they are so intent on keeping the national park on Alcatraz, there are other islands in the bay they can use instead, like Treasure Island. But even if they move them to Alcatraz, they can still keep it a national park, it will just be a national park that is still in its original use. I think the terrorists should be divided and housed not only in San Francisco but next to the Capitol in DC, NYC, Boston and Chicago. So that the terrorists will get to know real Americans and so that the residents of these areas cqan realize that Obama is right about the character of these people. It also provides the ACLU ready access to them, and hopefully better access to the ACLU residences and families.

It'd be real easy to spot "Abdul" in his pretty orange jumpsuit if he managed to get past all those Marines. newton is right--this will be the funniest NIMBY demonstration ever. It's kinda silly though. When's the last time somebody escaped from Supermax out there in Colorado? Really, just build these lovely specimens a fresh Supermax somewhere on US territory...it's got the advantage that once these losers die, the prison is usable for domestic scum. I think somewhere in the backwoods of Georgia could work pretty well. The locals would love to have extra hunting opportunities. I like the Alcatraz suggestion if only as a means of fucking with the left. We need to continually make a joke of their stupidity. If the essential function of a detention center stays the same we need to taunt them for that. If the changes in the way in which they adjudicate matters endangers Americans we need to mock them for that. And if any of this backfires on them (us) we need to be every bit as aggressive, shameful and political about it as they have been. I never used to look at the political opposition as the enemy but the past eight years have completely disabused me of that.

Put the Gitmo detainee's in Berkeley halfway homes - give them the jobs white folks refuse to do.. maybe work the toll booths at the Bay, Carcinas, Richmond, Dumbarton and Golden Gate bridges. Retrain them for employment at BART and Cal-Trans as civil engineers.
Angel Island in the SF bay would be perfect location to "house" these so-called gentlemen and when the lefties cry about it being a historical place involving Chinese coolies and Japanese internments remind them that Tanforan Park Mall sits atop another former WW2 internment camp. Hell put them in the Marin Civic Center jail - it was designed by Frank Loyd Wright dontchaknow. Hammer the left! Posted by: 13times at January 25, 2009 04:40 PM (R/aYf) 55
Being in the minority for while might just be the best medicine for the Republican Party. It was pretty obvious there towards the end that they had forgotten what they were supposed to stand for, and had also started taking a lot of their own base for granted.
I think a lot of our politicians have gotten stale, because they had been in charge for so long that they didn't have to fight and hold their positions. They lost the attributes that got them where they were in the first place. Posted by: Dreagon at January 25, 2009 04:40 PM (wHOms) 56

There are possibilities here that might be explored and entering the general prison population might not be all a bad thing. There are potential cellmates who could be relied on to administer stuff that would make Abu Graib seem light by comparison.
Other cellmates - Jeff Dahmer comes to mind - could give a whole new meaning to sleep deprivation. So go forward I say, and make sure Bubba has the incentive to treat these fellows "right." Posted by: Robert at January 25, 2009 04:46 PM (VotgB) 59

Rus, the reason they aren't housed on US soil has nothing to do with being scared of what they might do. It has to do with their legal status.
They -are not- prisoners of war. It would be great if they were. But they aren't. Under WWII era rules, they would be considered "Spies and Saboteurs", which allows summary execution. But here, they're refusing to wear uniforms, and they aren't fighting for a specific country. (Generally.) But the federal courts have made a laundry list of rulings (before Bush even entered office) that makes it pretty clear that if they're housed anywhere on US soil (even military prisons), they get full rights to a full US civilian trial - precisely because we can't call them POWs. (Since they don't wear uniforms.) So we have people that will willingly confess "Yes, I'm a member of AQ. Yes, I'd love to kill Americans. Yes, I planned and assisted." And yet these same people are going to get off in civilian court (After a $10 million-per-person trial) because they didn't pull the fucking trigger personally in the presence of non-US military witnesses that can testify. A long list of thing you would think are crimes -aren't- when they're done outside the US. And many will prove very difficult to prove once the US Federal rules of evidence chuck things like the computers recovered with this guy as 'gathered without warrant' and the like. So we could release them to Pakistan, where the crime happened and "on paper" they should clearly be executed on the spot... and they'll be involved in a jailbreak or released outright. Posted by: Al at January 25, 2009 05:00 PM (CyBUS) 64
Pelosi is Italian for dumbass.
BTW Rus you may not be a frightened pussy but you don't know what you are talking about. Not surprising given the way the media covers it, The reason we can't have these guys on US soil is a legal one. Now that the Supreme Court has embarrassed themselves by granting enemy combatants the rights of US citizens I am not sure it really matters anymore. They pretty much had to ignore the Geneva Convention, the separation of powers and various precedents to do it but when has any of those things ever stopped a judge from implementing the policies he prefers? By the precedent the court has set we are no longer able to take prisoners in the war on terror. We have to either execute them on the battlefield or give them full trials in US courts. Now that Obama the Ridiculous has suspended trials yet again it is likely that Congress will take a third shot at the issue and the Supreme Court will weigh in yet again before all is said and done. The court had already ruled that part of why they stepped in was due to the delay in... get this... giving trials to the prisoners. The left has made a complete and utter clusterfuck of the whole process for no other reason than partisan advantage and Pelosi is too big a dumbass to even realise when she is being mocked. Even when the Repubs were in the majority, they acted as if they were in the minority. The Republican leadership, from the RNC and through both houses, needs to resign. They've sold us out. I can produce a winning Republican platform that would take the White House and both houses within 8 years and it's nothing that the current leadership of the Republican party doesn't already know to be true.
I am so sick of the term bipartisan. I don't send my representatives to Washington to 'get things done', or, to 'get along with the other side'. Hey 13times, all of a sudden, you're concerned with the legalities of what to do with these people? Aren't you for torturing them? I don't think that's legal. It's a pretty bullshit response to say that "well, we can't bring them up on charges legally, so let's keep them in Cuba where we can torture them." Doesn't make much sense to me. The upshot of the Gitmo closing will be more dead enemy combatants on the battlefield. Fewer prisoners will be taken as field commanders will know that the likelihood that they will have to face them again will be increased.

Keeping people in secret prisons and torturing them makes us no better than the man we invaded Iraq to depose.
Wasn't that the big rationale? That he was torturing people? Oh. No. It was the WMD. That didn't exist. Some people act like the US is the only country in the history of the world to suffer a terrorist attack. Sorry, a lot worse shit has happened to a lot more innocent people than Americans. Like Vietnamese. Like innocent Iraqis by the hundreds of thousands. Meanwhile, assholes like all of you act sanctimonious and put on a big show about how we need to be tough on detainees. Go ahead, be scared. Cower under the fear of 9/11, while your party beats the drum. Don't worry, torturing all these people in gulags will keep us all safe, won't it? What a joke. Posted by: Rus at January 25, 2009 05:30 PM (BkTzm) 93
Rus,
The "bringing them up on charges legally" part is quite obnoxious when applied to a fucking war zone. The vast (99+%) majority of laws have their limitations to specific sub-portions of America. Constructing an IED in Seattle is a clear crime. Even the fucking morons around here might prosecute someone for doing that if they're white and non-metrosexual. Constructing an IED in Iraq violates <b>what</b> US law? And if we prosecute someone for <b>that</b>, we're violating the fucking Geneva Conventions ourselves! The Geneva Conventions -explicitly- want people prosecuted under -military- law to avoid civilians just lynching people. (The conventions were written for the last war, as always.) And you can knock if off with the "torturing in gulags" crap.
Three people, <b>three</b>, underwent waterboarding. KSM, one of the three, did provide useful operational information. (Read his testimony, then notice he admitted most of this prior to some of the events.) The unsanctioned hazing crap - yes, we can knock that the fuck off. But notice that was <b>not</b> going on at Guantanamo. The place has been essentially non-stop Amnesty International, IRC, and UN inspections since the beginning. But 'unsanctioned hazing crap' happens -more-frequently- at a random US prison than it would at Guantanamo. Check up on the average life expectancy of an imprisoned pedophile, for instance. And Rus, the concern troll, please keep in your severely limited mind the fact that 'just offing' these asswipes (apologies to toilet paper) has gotten several Marines and Army Soldiers prosecuted persecuted for doing just that. So, no summary executions are not the order of the day.
And since , in your infinite ignorance you fail to grasp the obvious, we also cannot give them to Ron Kuby or some other leftist shitball with feet lawyer/pimp to go to trial. Why? Because a great many of these hemorrhoids with feet in GITMO were cauight using state of the art American Intelligence collection methods. And while an ass like yourself thinks those aren't really important and we could just find Another Way, it's very hard to find relaible ways to outwits another human being, much less thousands or millions of them all at the same time. Intelligence means, methods and techniques are so important that I say gas the whole damn compound after the guards are out and the gates locked. Kill all the rats, big and small, two legged and four, and leave no one behind to prosecute. That would solve the problem but not mollify lefties like you. So call GITMO and tell you ain't skeered and you'll take one of them thar tally-banz in yer very own home, right this very min-ute. Well, Rus, I think you underestimate us. I don't care if they torture these guys or not. What I would like to see with the inmates in Guantanamo is that they march all of them out, line them up against the wall, and shoot them. All while being televised internationally. Then maybe a round of publicity in the Middle East saying something like "if you want to be treated like prisoners of war, then put on a uniform." As far as innocents dying needlessly, if you are going to start harping on that, then I expect to see a whole lot of condemnation of all the bad actors that parade through history, such as Stalin, Mao, Hitler, and so on, including the current idiots in North Korea, Iran, and Palestine. Until I hear that from you, I will understand that you are basically a blowhard, with little intellectual capacity to reason well, who might just be looking for a little attention since Mommy went to the grocery store. Innocents die needlessly across the globe daily. I lament their deaths. I also have enough sense to know that I can not do anything about that. But I do react when foreigners threaten to kill my fellow citizens. I want to kill them before they kill us, and I will work overtime to make sure that I do just that. That is because I see myself as an American, part of a great people and a great nation. This is an identification that the liberal scumbags amongst us do not seem to have. So, America would be better off if they packed their bags and took off for whatever island paradise they feel will best suit their infantile musings. america will be better off without them. #92 What is it with liberals that they swallow this stupid crap hook, line, and sinker. Is their a human gene that says "I am stupider than you so do all my thinking for me"? Every time I hear this line from liberals that there was no WMD, I look at them like they are the dumbest creatures on the face of the planet. First of all, if there was one chemical weapon in Iraq, that is enough to justify an invasion. And as you may recall, much more than that was found. But in the end, it does not matter. The idea of the invasion is to take the fight to them. The invasion of Iraq accomplished its purpose, which was to kill jihadis. That is enough reason to invade whatever Middle Eastern country. Saddam Hussein drew the short straw. That's all. In this sense, Bush was a genius. Posted by: Harry at January 25, 2009 07:04 PM (RxSlU) 133

CNN is just as stupid in speaking to his comments without any type of constructive criticism. 99 % of the people who voed for Obama wanted to close Guantanamo because of the effect this stupid move by BUSh has had the US moral leader in the world. It is the opinion of most of us that the remaining 275 terrorists held in Guantanamo should be tried in the US federal judicial system and , if found guilty by American jurors, be sent to any number of Federal Prisons, even some California prisons would be just fine....like Pelican Bay. Who would send them to a National Park? Only Boner! If you think of the murderers and rapists and other fine souls already in our prison system, those in Guantanamo are amateurs. Put them in with the general population of any american federal prison and do not send them back to their home countries. Some that have been released have now again, or for the first time, taken up arms against us. what should we have expected? We held them for 5,6, 7 or 8 years without charges. If you were held in a foreign country under the same circumstances, wouldn't you do something similar? Do any of you realize that not one of them will be "convicted" of the "crime" that you seem so determined to pretend is in question here if you replace those tribunals with regular criminal courts as if we were deciding the legal fate of an American gangbanger? God I hate you fucking retards. But since you're so determined to create circumstances by which every single detainee at Gitmo will be set free, I think it's only fair that they get to stay with you or in your shithole neighborhoods. They're already overrun by criminals anyway; what's a few more? Conservative: If they got picked up on a battlefield by our military, they're guilty by default. They can fucking rot for all I care, and I frankly don't give a shit if they get the crap beaten out of them for intelligence gathering purposes. If a tiny handful of "innocents" get caught in the dragnet, too fucking bad. War is hell, and better safe than sorry. Liberal: There's no prooooooof that they're guilty of anything!!!11111 Just because the stormtroopers of our eeeevil military-industrial complex say they captured them on a battlefield, out of uniform and with the intent of doing harm doesn't mean anything! Where can I donate for a defense fund for these bambi-eyed youths who would have become accountants if not for being wrongly imprisoned for all these years? Unless there's DNA evidence linking them to the crime, they need to be set free! Posted by: VJay at January 25, 2009 08:48 PM (k87Wm) 150

Some that have been released have now again, or for the first time, taken up arms against us. what should we have expected? We held them for 5,6, 7 or 8 years without charges. If you were held in a foreign country under the same circumstances, wouldn't you do something similar? Dave R, It's nice to see another chickenhawk Obama supporter giving moral cover to cowardly terrorists. I like to see you guys stick together. Bah... Alcatraz...
Is the the appropriate way to extend the hand of friendship to our misunderstood friends with a fetish for blowing themselves up? How be respected by out European betters if we simply move them from a new prison to an old one? The answer is simple. Where do we have plenty of extra gubermint housing? Split them up between Blair House, the White House and the Naval Observatory. Plenty of extra rooms and good ol Rev. Wright would approve of minorities in the Lincoln bedroom. Posted by: Damiano at January 25, 2009 09:19 PM (cfKer) 154
My only concern with Alcatraz is the kitchen facilities. Can they provide the kosher food that the terrorists require ? "Kosher" may not be the right word, but you know what I mean

99 % of the people who voed for Obama wanted to close Guantanamo
because of the effect this stupid move by BUSh has had the US moral
leader in the world.
The rest of the sane universe cares more about keeping people from getting killed than it does that we be seen as some kind of "moral leader" by people who were taking billions of dollars in bribes from Saddam to look the other way as he systematically imprisoned, tortured, and killed millions of people. Why does the United States want to pander to the racist European left, who, given their support of Hamas, is still upset that we drove their last "moral leader" to kill himself in the bottom of a bunker in Berlin? Dave R, as part pf Congressman Boehner's "neo-con" constiuent base who re-elected this year, I will say that he is telling us exactly what we like to hear. So go soak your whining libtard head. SW Ohio 9barring Hamilton, Cincinnati, and Dayton metropolitan areas) has a more sober and serious outlook on the nation's affairs than the entire Pacific Coast. (BTW it's pornounced "Bay-ner", not "Bone-er", you wanker.)
I suppose it can be said that Speaker Pelosi's rejection of housing Jihadis in Alcatraz is a classic case of NIMBY syndrome by libtards who don't want to live the the results of their decisions? Posted by: exdem13 at January 26, 2009 02:02 AM (lYKj1) 170

My local Fox in the morning channel, while full of half wit liberals, gives me the local weather, so I watch it just long enough to hear if I need snow gear. This morning, one of the numbskulls actually read the news about Obama closing Gitmo. She then said that "Some Republicans want to send the Gitmo detainees to Alkatraz". She added, "right now it is a tourist attraction." Wow, she really thinks that Some Republicans seriously want to send the Gitmo detainees to a tourist attraction. And what, did she think that they are going to buy them cotton candy too? Her tone was one of incredulity, as if she believed what she said. That is the kind of credit she is willing to give Republicans. She is the same lame brain who called Dubya, Mr. Bush for the last 4 years, but now is calling O, President Obama. Hmmm, double standard enough fer ya? Gaytanamo Bay, nice ring to it Blazer. Posted by: Trish at January 26, 2009 08:00 AM (mTvHJ) 173

This is a win-win situation. We move them all too liberal areas, the liberals feel (no facts) that these people are misunderstood angels. The terrorist will eliminate the liberals because of their non-belief in the child molester, or for shear stupidity or just for fun. We can then execute the terrorist for doing us this favor (chlorinating the gene pool) and everyone wins. Pelosi is really going to do something this term to increase the American people’s moral.
