| The Price Of Scorning A Princess...Pissing Off The KennedysI think it's safe to say NY Gov. David Patterson won't be getting any invitations to the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port anytime soon. If he does manage to wrangle one, he shouldn't accept any rides from Teddy to get there. An "apoplectic" Kennedy family is seething over the rough treatment that heiress apparent Caroline got from Gov. Paterson's office and is spoiling for revenge, several sources close to the clan have told The Post. "The governor's going to pay for this," said a well-placed Democrat. "Ted is furious. The family is furious. The Kennedys are now against the governor."And it's not just the Kennedy's who are pissed that Paterson selected Kirsten Gillibrand for Hillary Clinton's seat in the Senate. Plenty of downstate Democrats are mad and gun grabbing Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy has already vowed to primary Gillibrand in 2010. But that rift in the party may not be Paterson's biggest worry. Some analysts are saying that the snub of Andrew Cuomo guarantees that Mario's son will run against Paterson himself in 2010. The only question being asked in state Democratic circles was not if - but when - Cuomo, who did not attend yesterday's press conference, will announce his candidacy to challenge Paterson in next year's primary. "I see Gov. Cuomo in our future," quipped a prominent Democratic activist and lobbyist. The Dem characterized Paterson's performance over the past three days "as nothing short of outrageous" - particularly in handling Caroline Kennedy. Party insiders close to Cuomo say they expect the attorney general to announce he'll run for governor toward the end of this year. He's the most popular politician in the state, according to polls, and has a wealth of experience, including a stint as US secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Now Fred Dicker, who wrote the Cuomo story, is far more plugged in than I ever will be but I'm not as sure about this as he and his sources are. Cuomo ran an embarrassing primary for Governor in 2002 against H. Carl McCall who was the first black elected to statewide office (he was the Comptroller). That campaign went so badly that Cuomo had to drop out before the vote. I'm not sure Andrew Cuomo is set to make his mark as the guy who runs against every black Democrat running for Governor in NY. That said, Cuomo is an ambitious guy and he's blocked from moving up for the next 4-6 years unless he runs in a primary, so we'll see. The most depressing part of this otherwise enjoyable Democratic crackup is the fact that NY Republicans aren't in much of position to capitalize on it. Right now the biggest star on the Republican bench is a guy named Rudy Giuliani. Does he want in on this? Remember, he was running for this Senate seat in 2000 before being stricken with cancer. Will he run against Gillibrand (or the winner of the primary) in 2010? If he does and he wins, it means another campaign in 2012. Is he interested in running for Governor? Keep in mind he's 64 years old (65 in May). Has he had enough of politics and is now content to make money with his consulting firm? Beyond Rudy, there's really no one with any name recognition or record to speak of in the wings. I wonder if former Governor George Pataki wants to run for the Senate but yeesh, he wasn't so popular on his way out. Still he flirted with a presidential run in 2007 for 2008 that went no where. Maybe Republicans can parachute someone in from around the country ala Hillary in 2000. And speaking of Hillary, isn't it funny how she and her husband manage to leave a trail of destruction no matter where they go? Still, it's all popcorn worthy to say the least.Comments1
So, all this heat and no light about who should be Senator, and who should run for the seat and who will challenge the sitting Governor, and not once in the article are the policies of the contenders given as the reason for running. Rather, it is all just a high school popularity contest with fractures in the cool kids clique. Color me shocked.

Actually, I think the most depressing part is that New York's huge fiscal problems (which the recession and financial implosion will only make worse) have not a chance in hell of even starting to be fixed.

I want to be in politics, but only if you're really really nice and gentle about it. <snort> It's the political equivalent of "does this make me look fat?" Don't put yourself forward for a political office if you don't want to be judged on your performance in public and among other politicians. Posted by: MamaAJ at January 25, 2009 12:40 PM (X6Zdh) 5

I don't think Democrat infighting weakens the Democrat Party. Democrats always overcome intra-party rivalry when it comes time to vote in the general elections.
Republicans and Conservatives will get nothing more than episodic entertainment from Democrat cat fights. A Conservative Republican candidate backed by a Conservative Republican Party is what we need. Fuck popcorn. Democrats are getting the last laugh. Anyone think that maybe a Normal every day guy could run? to show that the dems are really the party of entitlement, the party of allowance, the party of oppression?
Has that crossed anyones mind? Oh, caroline was an idiot, and Bush was almost an idiot, but he had good intentions. I told this story over at my place about how when I was a big comic dork in my teens I told a friend about an idea I had about a retarded superhero. Thing is that while he had super powers, he was also retarded, so he destroyed large swaths of "the city" (in my case chicago) without knowing where he was going or what he was doing. At the end, the retard was successful in catching the bad guy, but in the process the retarded superhero destroyed everything he was protecting. Imagine team america mixed with "damage control" (a comic mini-series) thats what we were working at in about '90. Democracy consists of a bunch of retarded superheroe's. The Republican Party made a huge strategic error in not funding and fully backing Republicans in blue States. They stupidly thought the Republican status in those States could not significantly improve. They gave territory to the Democrats at no cost.

Even if there is no GOP candidate to run, I enjoy watching this pile up. I only hope Obama gets blame for some of it, because it appears promises were made and not kept... Tiger Hawk had this post: n the middle of Evan Thomas' insidery campaign book, A Long Time Coming, there is a section on early conflict between John McCain and Barack Obama in the Senate, even before Obama was openly running for president. I thought this bit was interesting for more than one reason: Without reading too much into this anecdote, on immigration, at least, Barack Obama took care of his base and John McCain did not, and his base included Caroline Kennedy. She must indeed be a little bitter about now. Posted by: Joe at January 25, 2009 01:53 PM (0Gde6) 35
Is there any state that goes Dem that ever goes back to being Pubbie? In 2002 the R's took over the NC legislature by a 61-59 majority and the Donks simply go get one of the R's to cross over so that there was a 60-60 tie until the next election (google "Black and Decker Scandal" for the details-suffice it to say that the former Dem speaker of the NC House-Black-is now in federal prison for his part). This year the R's took over the Tenn. Leg. by a single vote. What happens? The Dems work a deal where they agree to vote for a maverick R as speaker and he votes for himself so he gets the speakership by a single vote. Now he is the speaker and has the power to appoint committee chairs-what do you want to bet that they will be the same Dems as were there in the last election. The point is that the Dems will fight (dirty) to hold on to power, while the Pubbies go all "gang of whatever" and then give their Presidential nomination to the one guy who did the most to weaken the party's will to fight when they had the majority. Let me put this another way: The Pubbies have had the Presidency for 28 of my 42 years and have appointed seven of the nine USSC justices. Despite that-they haven't been able to put a majority in place that could prevent an abomination like the Kelo decision. When I start to think about stuff like that it makes me reluctant to ever give them another dime of my money. What's the point? Posted by: CavMedic at January 25, 2009 01:53 PM (rYFmu) 36

None that I can see. I live in Iowa, where politics are even more schizophrenic than normal: on the one hand you have a pretty solid red-state worldview socially, but since agriculture drives 90% (or something) of the state's economy you've got everyone surgically sewn onto the government teat. Thus whoever gets elected does so by promising yet more subsidies for agriculture... no surprise they end up voting with the Donks in congress. You just can't compete against "all 'free' shit, all the time." Posted by: bullfrog at January 25, 2009 02:08 PM (dW6LM) 41

Pelayo,
yeah, but by that point will it matter? There's one rule of politics even more ironclad than "states that go Dem, never go back" and that is no government program can ever be ended. They went socialist back in the '60s in Europe and they're now well and truly fucked, but you don't see governmental rollbacks making any headway over there.... So you think William Kennedy Smith is planning on raping the governor's ass while Michael Skakel beats him to death with a golf club? Michael Kennedy could poke him also, if you tell him he's the new babysitter. Ted Kennedy could drive the body to the water and dump it and the car. Or zombie John F. Kennedy Jr. could take the gov up in a small plane and crash into the sea, after eating his brains, of course. Zombie JFK could launch a slow moving zombie attack on the governor's mansion and then neglect to send in the fast moving zombie reinforcements in a Bay of Pigs style cluster fuck zombie attack. I'm not sure it would accomplishment anything but it would be very Kennedy-esque. For sure. He could then scream "Ich bin ein Berliner!" and rip open his shirt to reveal a chocolaty chest with a cream filling center oozing out through a rotting pastry skin. So many options for such a diversely talented family. Ya know? Posted by: Dang at January 25, 2009 02:22 PM (Y5LIx) 48

Ironic since the dems tried so hard to destroy palen and ultimaely left that job to her running mate. One curious comment I heard was that the previous senator wanted everyone on her staff to keep their jobs and to have things run as they had before. Don't remember who said that but maybe this girl was the only one would agree to these "rules" in order to get the seat.

Peter King has already said he's running for the Senate seat, and that Rudy plans on endorsing him. Will Rudy run for Gov? I'm not sure, but he seems like the guy who would want to put one last feather in his cap before calling it quits, so we will see. And for the record, there's quite a few young conservative Republicans on Long Island/upstate that are a few years out from prime time, but a particularly embarrassing year for the Dems could help propel them out of the cradle even quicker. Should be a fun 4 years in New York!

Totally OT, but I'm going to keep plugging my work here:
I'm going through the Stimulus Bill, line by line, and I'm up through a little over a quarter of it by now. Here's an interesting factoid: $4.85 billion in stimulus, total, goes to DoD. $4.85 for facilities improvements, and $350 million for "energy efficiency improvements." That's about 1/2 of 1% of the total package, and far less than is allotted to "oversight" of the new program. In fact, it's less than is allotted for water and sewer improvements for rural communities. I guess we know which programs Obama thinks "don't work." But really. Ted's no Jack or Bobby -- everyone knows this. And Caroline, pathetically, is not even a Ted. Who else is there? John-John's dead. Patrick's brain-dead. Robert's busy tilting at windmills. The rest are either too complacent wallowing in their trust funds to care or too dumb to cash in on the political gold that their name holds. Adios, Kennedys. Your time has come and gone. Posted by: red speck at January 25, 2009 03:42 PM (6RSWl) 75

You think William Kennedy Smith is planning on raping the governor's
ass while Michael Skakel beats him to death with a golf club? Michael Kennedy could poke him also, if you tell him he's the new babysitter. Ted Kennedy could drive the body to the water and dump it and the car. Or
zombie John F. Kennedy Jr. could take the gov up in a small plane and
crash into the sea, after eating his brains, of course.

I was watching some show on Food Network about Ray's Pizza in NY (the famous one). Apparently, the original proprietor of Ray's was arrested and jailed for dealing heroine out of his pizza restaurant. The surname? CUOMO. I've been trying to figure out if he is the patriarch of the cuomo political family, but all online sources appear to have been purged. Anyone have a clue about this?

The key is Hillary. I don't think she wants to be Secretary of State, after all would you like to be responsible for Obama's foreign policy? She found out that she can't just grab power in the Senate but she couldn't quit, that would look bad. When Spitzer screwed himself he left Patterson, a weak ticket balancer, as Governor. So she takes the SecState job and will resign in a huff when Obama does something idiotic. Just a matter of time.
Hillary sees herself as an executive and will go "home" to New York, taking advantage of the Patterson/Kennedy/Cuomo split to run for Governor. Then, as the Obama administration stumbles to a close, she can challenge him for the nomination in '12. There is no one with more ambition and less scruples than the Clintons, even the Kennedys. Ah, how to put this into perspective?
You have Tio Teddy, the Massachusetts state swimming and driving coach? Papa Joe was a depression era Irish Rum runner and Mafia wannabe/associate who made the family fortune off of drunk Yankees. Joanne Kennedy married to Tio Teddy, barracho and misogynist, who was run over by a car once while drunk in Boston, the Kennedy Tribe's Hub. JFK, a pill head before being a pill head was fashionable and an adulterer with a sexy woman who we all must agree was so dumb she probably talked to people's penises 9as she was sucking them) in the first person. Jackie O, apparently Bouvier is French for 'available to the highest bidder', who slept her way from one social scene to another, dragging her trust fund tax deductions with her and letting the help raise them. John-John Jr, NYC lawyer. Hard to believe but he passed the NY state bar just in time to prove he was marginally smart enough to pass a test and with time to spare to prove he was a dumb a Kennedy as there has ever been...who just happened to fly a passenger plane into a storm, at night, carrying himself, his wife, his sister-in-law and his legacy into the Atlantic. After all, he was drinking, with a broken leg, flying at night, in the dark, without VFR training, over water, in a storm, with his wife and sister-in-law along...but he was Kennedy, what could go wrong? Michael Skakel, fat, balding woman killer and social hemorrhoid. William Kennedy Smith, date rapist and all around fun guy Kennedy. Patrick Kennedy, substance abusing, drunk ass, Kennedy from the old school mold. RFK, the lost liberally ideological of the Tribe, a real go-getter until one of his own go-got him first.OOps!! I won't even bother with Peter Lawford, The Shriver Clan, Maria Shwarzenhugger Moosejaw, and the rest of this cast of well heeled inbreds. Too bad they don't all relocate to Bimini or the Adriatic, then the EuroTrash Paparazi could get their fill of weekly drunken exploits and far more frequent Princess Di level car wrecks thanks to Kennedy-esque drinking and driving. Think Partick and Teddy for this... I think the lesson here is that Paterson - Patterson? - has shown some independence.
It might cost him his job, Cuomo will be hard to beat. but IMO Paterson doesn't want the job. Paterson probably won't run for election. It is a tough job and certainly less rewarding then moving on to lectures, writing, board memberships, etc. He has a lock on senior status in the Democratic Party for the remainder of his life. Simply agreeing to get out of Cuomo's way next year may be.... ahem.... rewarding. That would set Cuomo up for a shot at President in 2016. If Cuomo had gone to the Senate then exactly who might pay Paterson to not run in 2010? All-in-all the Governor came out looking better than anyone else in this empty affair. Hilary is snookered. She has no run at President and isn't getting any younger. And at State she can only do what Obama wants. But she knew that going in, so she is going to State because she believes it will enhance her prestige and income afterwards. She will replace Albright as the former SOS of choice for any PC occasion. Expect her to resign after a year to eighteen months of the Smart Diplomacy or whatever she is selling now. Doubtless, the Kennedy family is enraged, but there’s little they can do. However glorious Camelot was, it was 40 years ago, and since then we’ve seen the downside of the Kennedys. In no particular order: - Chappaquiddick (the Dike bridge, as rebuilt, screams guilt  - William Kennedy Smith (2 or 3 times, at least one involving Uncle Teddy) - Sargent Shriver (comedy relief) - Rumors that Teddy tried to sell out to the Soviets (borderline trooferism, but the timeline, politics and locations fit, and Teddy hasn’t been susceptible to extortion since Chpq.; why invent fiction?) - Michael Skakel ( a cousin and a real skidmark, but he fits the William Kennedy Smith mould, or is it the other way?) My guess is that more than a few people are tired of the Kennedy family activities. Joe P. Kennedy II and Pat J. Kennedy, both US Congressmen at some point, have (average?) records, perhaps they will be fixtures in their districts, but they are not up to their parent’s abilities. Ed. Kennedy Jr., fits this profile too. Now we’ve seen Caroline and she’s about as qualified as Sargent Shriver, and has a few more problems Wading through Wiki, the Kennedy family is large and potentially influential, but in an advisorly way; they may ne very well connected, and may recommend, advise, even promote people and ideas, but they are not the John or Bobby (or maybe even Teddy) of Camelot. Now the Kennedys ask and accept what they are given. Gov. Patterson may have realized enough of these things to decide to stand up and decide to have things his way. There are many videos I have seen of the Princess, one of her wedding day, where she just doesn't appear to be all there. She comes across kind of loopy. I think she gives off a weird-something-wrong-with-me vibe. Combine that with the Valley Girl speech patterns and we're precariously close to a whiff of retardation. On the other hand, I guess if anyone stands close enough to Uncle Teddy, second-hand intoxication is a risk.

Actually, Burr gets a bad rap. He's a Revolutionary War hero, was a faithful husband and caring person. He was also very respectful in Congress. He's remembered for the duel and for his trial of treason. There is a lot of info that points to the treason charges being bogus. And a duel is a duel. Mary Jo Kopechne was unavailable for comment.” (Oh wait, maybe I made that up). Posted by: Rich G. at January 26, 2009 06:46 PM (FWmA+) 137
I think the reason Burr rightfully became thoroughly despised is not that he shot Hamilton but how the the killing of Hamilton came about.
The two men were political rivals. But Burr had no actual reason to quarrel with Hamilton, he chose to. He seized upon a rather mild remark Hamilton had written. Burr said it was an unforgivable insult. It was an insult beyond any possible settlement. New York business and social circles were small then, the matter was hard to ignore. No one else saw a big insult. To most there seemed no insult at all.. Hamilton retracted the remark. Burr said that wasn't good enough. He hounded Hamilton and called him a coward. Finally Hamilton agreed to the duel. By that time duels were illegal almost everywhere. And those which were conducted were pro forma. You showed honor by accepting danger, shots were fired, they missed, and that ended the matter. Burr insisted on a real duel and shot Hamilton as precisely as he could.
