Sarah Palin's State of the State Address

Article here. She's announced a hiring freeze in response to a possible $1 billion shortfall.

Even Alaska's up to $1 billion in the red, and they run a tight ship.

Obviously, this is a great opportunity for Palin to show her leadership skills.

1 I'm sure the low price of oil is killing them.  But oil will be back to 100+ a barrell at some point, and in the meantime we haven't done a frickin thing to increase our supply.

Only $1 billion?  They're in terrific shape compared to my state and the other 48.

Go Sarah!

3 "When the challenges seem as high as Mt. McKinley, and change as constant as the mighty Yukon flows, and political events send shockwaves through our foundation like the '64 earthquake, what do Alaskans do?" Plain said. "We climb Denali, we forge the river, and we build a stronger foundation on higher ground. When it matters most, lesser differences fall away, and just like family, Alaskans unite."

Meanwhile, Arnold Schwarzenegger was hiding under his desk.

Speaking of the price of oil, has this shut down the oil sand production plants?

In all seriousness, she needs this. Make some tough calls, show some leadership, get her state through this reasonably well.

Not run up debt and then call for help from Washington (ahem).

8 Well, if she hadn't been running around buying all those clothes this fall maybe this wouldn't have happened.

And let's not forget about the whole Trig thing.

We need answers!

Or something.

Come now, all you "wingers."  You know they stole that 1 billion and spent it on Sistah Sarah's wardrobe for the presidential campaign, for fertility treatments for her so she could give birth to her daughter's son Trig, and of course, for the time machine she built and used to go back to 9/11/01 and bomb the Pentagon and WTC!

You people really don't think clearly at all.

Have no fear, Presi-Jesus will fix this with a wave of his benevolent hand.

11 Don't think she's not 100% ahead of the curve on this. If she's who I think she is, she's just aching for a chance to show up all those naked emperors who called her a snowbilly. Steering her state through the rocky shoals and doing it like a conservative while everyone else is losing their heads = SMRT on a number of levels.

You know, Alaska seems like a perfect microcosm of conservatism when compared to what's going at the national level.  You've got two opposite approaches to fixing a huge debt problem:  spending like a Vegas hooker who just pickpocketed an AMEX card or cutting spending and pulling the belt even tighter.  It will be extremely interesting to see what the results will be in a year's time.  I know I'll be watching.

18 There's a fact which Palin mentions in her speech here that bears mentioning again: the only reason Alaska is not much more deeply in budget trouble is because of decisions she made two years ago. I also like that she went after the AGIA naysayers.

For her own re-election politics in Alaska, I think this speech did her a world of good.

Again, Sarah Palin shows us that style is more important than substance. Her credentials are above and beyond Obambi's. She is smarter by orders of magnitude.

She is ahead of the curve and doing her duty as Governor.

Have Faith, the Tide will turn and people will be singing her praises when she runs against Obambi in '12.

23 Yes. A hiring freeze will resolve a $1 billion shortfall...true leaders make tough decisions. A hiring freeze when few if anyone's being hired...isn't a tough decision. It's a great PR stunt.

And a tight ship creates a $1 billion shortfall?

When Alaska stops taking medicaid/medicare reimbursements, or federal Schip funds or federal education dollars...then its leaders can say they are not asking for federal dollars.

Off topic, but tangentially related:

I just read on some tech blog that Obama made a hissyfit over him having to give up his Blackberry.  It now looks that he will indeed get to keep it, promising to use it only to contact a close circle of friends and advisors.

Hello?

Isn't this the same thing that Palin was crucified for?  The tech blog mentions various security vulnerabilities of using a Blackberry, among them, malware that can covert it to a radio transmitter allowing a third party to use it like a listening device, a way to locate the user thereby allowing someone to pinpoint the general area Obama is in, and etc.

Not sure how this stacks up to the other 49 states, but Alaska faces some serious difficulties due to the size of our state and all of the remote villages that we have programs for.  Coming from the midwest, it was hard to understand how all of the cities in a state weren't connected by roads...not even the capitol.  Everything that goes in or out of Juneau has to be done by boat or plane.
