| Correction, CorrectedMy original correction was a bit tentative as I didn't know the facts. I wrote that Jake Tapper had said -- Obama is the first President since Washington to step down into the presidency.Having now read/searched the transcripts of ABCNews' inaugural day coverage, I can say that Tapper did not say this, or anything even close to this. He actually didn't say very much throughout the day, and it was all standard reportage. I didn't even see anything praising Obama at all. In fact, a search for "George Washington" doesn't pull up a quote from anyone else, either. He simply didn't say it, and I was slapdash to write that he had. What probably happened is that someone interviewed said it, or it was said on another network. Drew really never sent this as a "tip," just as chatter in email as we seethed throughout the day, so he didn't work hard to pin down the time or precise details about it -- he didn't expect me to pull it out of an email and parade it around as a fact, and I shouldn't have done so. He was flipping through channels and remarking casually about the coverage, not in reporter/blog-tipping mode. It's not Drew's fault, it's mine. And right now I'm working to correct this. I have reported something in error and it seems to be getting spread further. Not only am I embarrassed about getting it wrong, but Tapper really does try more than most to keep it fair. As some have noted, and I thought myself at the time -- this really never sounded like something Tapper would say. You don't spend years working up a reputation as an impartial reporter just to piss it away indulging a Matthews-esque thrill up the leg puffery. Did Tapper say whether he'd yell a question or two at Rahm Emanuel about his contact with Blagovevich? Or by arguing with you is he just haggling over price rather than what he is.

No, it's been dropped as a story. No one asks Rahm about it and in Chicago there haven't been any stories about Blago in a while. It's like none of it ever happened. If it were a Republican Pravda would have hounded the story to death. Posted by: TheQuietMan at January 21, 2009 10:10 PM (XUAzl) 22

God, do I agree. Penguin,
That's the kind of thing that will make Obama a one-termer. Gonna be hard to "Sister Souljah" the likes of Jay-Z, but if he doesn't, and doesn't sound sincere, next round he's gonna lose Virginia, NC, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, and maybe even Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nevada and Colorado, almost no matter whom the Republicans run. But if he does dump the hip hoppers under the bus, they won't be nearly so accommodating as Rev. Wright. In fact, he'll become mighty white, mighty quick. It's a rough sort of triangulation he's tried. It wouldn't have lasted this long without a full court press by the press. I don't think it can hold. Course, I thought Obama'd be easier to beat than Hillary, so I don't know shit when it comes to politics. Posted by: notropis at January 21, 2009 11:33 PM (Q/yna) 84

hutch1200,
I don't know from white guilt. I do know a lot of white folks who voted Obama, but don't personally know a one who voted for him from "white guilt." Basically, these were people who thought that Bush had fucked up big time, were not impressed with McCain, and decided that Obama sounded pretty reasonable, intelligent, and on-the-ball. They're the 3rd leg of Obama's triangulation: Minorities: Intellectual Liberal Urban White-Guilt Types: Middle Class Working Folks sick of Bush and looking for something different. That's the leg that the continued antics of the hip-hoppers and their ilk will quickly disillusion. I'm guessing the Garrison Keillor crowd will "wave their hands in the air like they just don't Posted by: notropis at January 22, 2009 12:17 AM (Q/yna) 92

OT: Obama calls for Israel to open Gaza border.
My take: Israel should do it, very loudly and very publicly. Get the film crews to cover some symbolic opening up of a gate. After the first terrorist attack, Israel should then very loudly, very publicly, repudiate Obama's Gaza policy, and call into question Obama's competence on the Middle East border. Reclose the border, and do whatever is necessary. This will establish Obama as a fool when it comes to Israel/Palestine issues. This is the way for Israel to go, even though it will cost lives. I understand trying to placate Tapper to avoid a larger kerfuffle.
What I don't understand is the hand-wringing on this thread over whether Tapper is a liberal. I mean come on. That man is a journalist. He's in the same category as Couric, Olbermann, Brian Williams, Rachel Maddow, Stephanopolous and the rest. We all know the truth. Posted by: Indythinker at January 22, 2009 07:01 PM (WiIQi) 109

>>Ouch. --- Zing. Boffo. Pow. Wham. Seriously, I hope Ace isn't getting grief over the misquote. If it turns out Tapper is whining about this, I'll lose any respect I have for him. Posted by: Y-not at January 22, 2009 07:12 PM (P9xCZ) 115
On reading the statement, I immediately assumed that Tapper was tweaking the cultists. Perhaps in response to some messianic rhapsodizing by one of his colleagues. As noted above, he is better than most of the ToadySM.
Now I'm kind of disappointed that he didn't say it. If I'd been quoted saying that, even if I didn't, I'd have claimed it. Proudly. Maybe thrown in a "He has Arisen to the top of the stairs, and is about to Ascend to the podium so that me may receive His Address", just to make it painfully obvious that I wasn't buying into the Word made Lightworker ecstasy of the genuflecting press corps. C'mon Tapper. Tweak 'em. Tweak 'em 'til they bleed. Posted by: Uncle Pinky at January 22, 2009 07:16 PM (a/1Ii) 116

JackStraw, #90: So if I understood you to said, Drew, a guy who calls others here liars, claims he never backs up, and a guy you give co-blogger status to, was flat wrong in what he said and refuses to back down. Ace was wrong. You know how I know this? Because he said so. He published, front and center on his blog, a correction. Before that, he did the same thing when he suspected that he might be wrong. In terms of credibility, that puts him over Dan Rather by a couple orders of magnitude. "Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody has those days." Learn that, and try to internalize it.
