Update: Not Plague, but Leaked Bio or Chem Weapon, That Killed Algerian Al Qaeda?

So claims an intel source cited by the Washington Times.

An al Qaeda affiliate in Algeria closed a base earlier this month after an experiment with unconventional weapons went awry, a senior U.S. intelligence official said Monday.

The official, who spoke on the condition he not be named because of the sensitive nature of the issue, said he could not confirm press reports that the accident killed at least 40 al Qaeda operatives, but he said the mishap led the militant group to shut down a base in the mountains of Tizi Ouzou province in eastern Algeria.

He said authorities in the first week of January intercepted an urgent communication between the leadership of al Qaeda in the Land of the Maghreb (AQIM) and al Qaeda's leadership in the tribal region of Pakistan on the border with Afghanistan. The communication suggested that an area sealed to prevent leakage of a biological or chemical substance had been breached, according to the official.

"We don't know if this is biological or chemical," the official said.

24 Read something the other day about how powerful Oxyclean was, that some PD's were worried that it could be a problem when it came to collecting evidence at crime scenes...stuff works too well on blood stains.

So the AQ fuckers are now playing with Bio/Chemical weapons...and a few of them did themselves in. WE'RE IN BIG FUCKING TROUBLE!! Chem and Bio weapons are a "poor man's nuke", easy to make and easy to dispurse into urban areas (water supply, subway/mass transit systems, large buildings). I wonder if "The Messiah" has any fucking idea about what to do to increase our readiness in NBC defense...Unicorns and rainbows ain't gonna do jackshit if an urban center is attacked with Bio or chemical weapons...

As for ShamWow Vince and his nuts...just tell Nick and Tim...I'm sure those two buttpirates are into Slap-Chopping each other's nuts like crazy...

Even the MSM said Sadam had uranium.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25546334/

The removal of 550 metric tons of "yellowcake" — the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment — was a significant step toward closing the books on Saddam's nuclear legacy. It also brought relief to U.S. and Iraqi authorities who had worried the cache would reach insurgents or smugglers crossing to Iran to aid its nuclear ambitions.

"Iraq never had WMDs, but it'll be Bush's fault that Iraq's WMDs found their way into Al Qaeda's hands."

You know that's right. Among his many major failings was not realizing that those non-existent WMDs wouldn't find their way to Syria, Iran and terrorist organizations when he invaded Iraq, failing to adequately secure the borders so that those non-existent WMDs couldn't find their way into the hands of the laughably-named "axis of evil" nations, whom Bush alienated by failing to negotiate with, without preconditions.

How many epic fails do you want from your Bu$hHitler, before you are willing to admit that EVERYTHING he did was WRONG, and that ANYTHING that might go WRONG over the next DECADE, can be laid directly at Chimpy McCheneyBurton's feet???????

No worries, Buck. He's putting Leon Panetta in charge of our national intelligence operations. They'll never penetrate that screen.

On a very, very serious note, I believe there will be at least one major terrorist strike on American soil in the next four years, and possibly a series of coordinated strikes. I also believe Obama's response to that will be to wring his hands and call the U.N.

As we all feel good about how liberal and enlightened we are going into tomorrow's gala inaugural celebrations, the majority of Americans have no freaking idea what door they've just opened.

After 9-11 a key American diplomatic phrase disappeared from the news, "Known State Sponsors of Terrorism".

To maintain overt opposition to "Known State Sponsors of Terrorism" would have been a war against islamic states. [only Cuba and the NORKs were the only non-islamists in this group of more than a dozen states]

Well, its very good or very bad news, depending on details not known as yet (at least publicly).

It could be a bio/chemical test that got away from them and killed a lot of terrorists. Or, maybe we sabotaged them. If so and it scares them from using this stuff again, very good.

It could have been a trial run that was completely successful, and the message was coded to make it appear otherwise. (" 40 dead test subjects, yes our smallpox/sarin/plague/anthrax/whatever delivery system works perfectly, on with the glorious jihad") = very bad.

Either way, the odds of our deterring them just dropped drastically thanks to the One. So yeah, we are screwed.

86 It's good to recall that there have been a lot of these types of stories over the last 8 years, and none of them became a threat, if they were even true at all. Crop dusters? UAVs and SCUDs launched from a cargo ship? Private plane carrying a nuke? All probably feasible, but none ever happened. Maybe our counter-terrorism efforts have been more extensive and successful than we ever imagined. I hope so. But jihadis are dangerous enough with just AK-47s and simple explosives, they don't need to get into James Bond stuff. We need to get rid of them, but there's no need to scare ourselves.

The story doesn't add up unless the first news report was deeply flawed. Bubonic plague is a poor candidate for things to weaponize - common, plentiful antibotics will put it down. It's simply not a threat to the Western world these days. But if you're a Neanderthal terrorist asshat living the mujadeen lifestyle in the hills it's an altogether different proposition.

Nope, it's even better than them being hoisted on their own petard - they's smote by God (that and what's probably cramped, unsanitary, flea-bitten conditions).

Not necessarily. While it may not be a good weaponization candidate, it would still cause a lot of problems. I mean really, the BLACK PLAGUE?? If we go from the present 20 or so US cases per year to 2000 in a month....even with the availability of antibiotics, it'll still cause panic. Just because of the name.

On a very, very serious note, I believe there will be at least one major terrorist strike on American soil in the next four years, and possibly a series of coordinated strikes. I also believe Obama's response to that will be to wring his hands and call the U.N.

Yes to first sentence, no to second. Obama will likely be more inclined to react with deadly force to a deadly attack:

1) He will know he won't be called names for it. The right will tend to agree with it, and the left will not care because it is him doing it.

2) Being a leftist, his turbo-conscience has been cranked up to "11, Preening" his entire life. So paradoxically, he won't be half as hesitant to use deadly force as would a conservative who is used to having to wrestle with his like a normal person. Deep inside he will know that if a progressive person feels the temptation, well, then it must be right!

LOL, it reminds me of an episode in High School Chemistry when we were in lab with about two dozen hydrogen generators going and collecting H2. One fool had a problem which he thought was a leak whereupon he started looking for it with a match.

Someone next to him immediately blew it out and the instructor threw him out for being q dumb ass. He never came back to Chemistry so I don’t know what they did with him because it was a required course for College Prep.

Maybe W could perform one last act as president and make that whole AQ laiden area a glorious glass parking lot. It would be our pleasure to get them their 72 Virginians, post haste.

I had a nice thought when I read this. Just before going out to the swearing in, W should order a nuke strike on Iran. After Barry is sworn in, Bush should shake his hand, then lean in and say, "I have ordered a nuke strike on Iran. By now, the missiles are in the air on their way to the target. Deal with it, bitch." I'm betting Barry would start to quiver. We hear more "uh's" than ever before.

106 The law of unintended consequences is not a concept, it's a fact!

"...An eight-year-old Senate report confirms that disease-producing and poisonous materials were exported, under U.S. [remember Reagan and Rummy's handshake in 1983 and 1984] government license, to Iraq from 1985 to 1988 during the Iran-Iraq war. Furthermore, the report adds, the American-exported materials were identical to microorganisms destroyed by United Nations inspectors after the Gulf War. The shipments were approved despite allegations that Saddam used biological weapons against Kurdish rebels and (according to the current official U.S. position) initiated war with Iran..."

al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) obviously beat the weapons inspectors to one of the many unsecured munitions caches in Iraq that were left unguarded by US troops after the rush to Baghdad.

It was a piece of cake for AQI to move it to their buds, al Qaeda in the Land of the Maghreb (AQIM). Where upon; they summarily opened a can of whoop-arse with unintended consequences...!

Or were our intentions, unintended...?

108 Heads up!

According to a comment I just found at Jihad Watch, a comment by Max Publius:

Muslims caused the Black Death in Europe by biological warfare. This may be one of Islam's few innovations. Muslims catapulted diseased, dead bodies over the walls into Christian Constantinople. From there, bubonic plague spread into Europe and killed over 50 million people, or one in three Europeans. Historians obscure the link to Islam by calling these jihadist Muslims "Mongols," but they were actually Muslim, using Arabic names, and worshipping Mohammad....

Biowarfare -- an Islamic tradition.
