| Poll: 44% Say Global Warming Due to "Planetary Trends" Rather than Humans"Planetary Trends" being a catch-all for natural processes like cyclical warming and cooling periods, oceanic and volcanic effects, and (I hope, though it doesn't say so in the question) for variations in that big ball of fusion-fire hanging right over us. The last theory--that solar input has overwhelmingly the largest effect on average global temperatures--just roared into the public mind this past year with the discovery that several solar cycles seem stuck at historic minimums. The poll:Forty-four percent (44%) of U.S. voters now say long-term planetary trends are the cause of global warming, compared to 41% who blame it on human activity. Seven percent (7%) attribute global warming to some other reason, and nine percent (9%) are unsure in a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Fifty-nine percent (59%) of Democrats blame global warming on human activity, compared to 21% percent of Republicans. Two-thirds of GOP voters (67%) see long-term planetary trends as the cause versus 23% of Democrats. Voters not affiliated with either party by eight points put the blame on planetary trends. In July 2006, 46% of voters said global warming is caused primarily by human activities, while 35% said it is due to long-term planetary trends. In April of last year, 47% of Americans blamed human activity versus 34% who viewed long-term planetary trends as the culprit. But the numbers have been moving in the direction of planetary trends since then. What a pity that just as we started winning the information war global warming alarmists have taken the White House and Congress. The other 56% believe global warning is man-made. They also reported they love the taste of ass.

Not only that, but after a few years of unnecessary and costly programs to "fight global warming", they will say "It's working" when the planet continues to cool as it has been for the last so many years. Posted by: Jim Digriz at January 19, 2009 08:14 PM (JXVdw) 3

Yes, but that means an increasing number of voters will see their activities as unmitigated foolishness.

the Sun and the El Nino/La Nina cycle is responsible for the cooling we're seeing.
That's why those scumbag science fakes are claiming that the effects of global warming won't show up for ten years or so. I.E. - about the time the El Nino/La Nina cycle flips again so they can panic libtards and the ignorant over the next ten or so year period. The poor man has been screaming about how his free speech rights have been taken away by the anti-science Bushies since 2001. I've always understood why politicians like former Sen James inhoffe and other GOP policy makers have argued against global warming - Simple dollars and cents and kow-towing to the Oil industry and other industries' need to pollute to save money. But I can't for the life of me understand why you guys take up your opposition so vigorously. I mean what's in it for you? Nothing. I've mentioned my background in an earlier thread; I worked for 32 years as a meteorologist for the U.S. Air Force, so I feel this is a subject I can address with some reasonable understanding and authority.
A couple of things are true: we have created "heat islands" centered around our major population centers, where the temperatures are and will remain several degrees warmer than they would be if we weren't pouring hundreds of square miles of concrete, chopping down trees and burning fossil fuels. Also, we're spewing gaseous byproducts into our atmosphere at alarming and unhealthy levels, particularly in places like Los Angeles, where the gaseous wastes of 11 million people are trapped in a shallow basin with no effective venting mechanism other than an occasional outbreak of the Santa Ana Winds. These aren't good things, and I'm not against some reasonable efforts to restrict and control these human activities. But that isn't the same thing as "global warming" (which is now being referred to as "climate change", in case some of you didn't get the memo).
All of the actual data I have seen suggests to me that the global atmosphere is in fact able to pretty efficiently process the worst we can throw at it, with almost no net effect on the global scale. It's kind of like a treeful of monkeys crapping on each other and thinking - through delusions of grandeur - they've soiled the entire forest.
In spite of human activity over the past hundred years, the single largest source of atmospheric carbon dioxide (aka "plant food"), is and will remain the Pacific Ocean. This increases and decreases globally as the ocean heats and cools around a roughly 25 year natural cycle. This is called the "Pacific Decadal Oscillation" in case any of you are interested in further reading. A secondary source of naturally occurring carbon dioxide is volcanic activity. Oddly, one of James Hansen's primary sources for monitoring atmospheric CO2 is an observatory located next to an active volcano on an island in the Pacific Ocean.
As well, the biggest single factor affecting the global heating/cooling pattern is the Sun, which is why scientists have discovered the same warming/cooling cycles on Mars as they've identified on Earth.
None of which is to say we should have no concern for our environment. Localized efforts to clean up, say, the Hudson River don't need to have the status of a global movement in order to remain valid on their own merits. And this is the problem inherent to the "global warming" true-believers: it isn't enough any more for them to just clean up New York and L.A. They've appointed themselves as the guardians of the world, and have crossed the line from real science to religion.
So let's develop some great new technologies. When they come up with a flying car that runs on cold fusion and carries a $20k pricetag, I'll buy one. But cutting NASA funding for space research (which is most likely to actually produce a flying car) and channeling the money into obstructionist eco-warrior programs is not the way to get there.
Here's my policy statement: if you live someplace like Detroit or Newark (or Beijing for God's sake), clean up your mess. But don't blame me for it; I live in Tennessee. Posted by: Old Tom at January 19, 2009 09:42 PM (f1yKn) 54

You seriously expect anybody on any major conservative websites, much less this one, to feel offended and defensive over John McCain? Have you followed the other side at all? Ever? Dude, I know you guys avoided actual debate with the other side throughout school and as much as possible for the rest of your life (hence, why you're still a liberal), so it can be difficult and I applaud you for actually attempting it - but at this point it just looks silly. Every single respected atmospheric scientist in every world has come to the same conclusion. Except for, you know, the "all of them" that aren't in the modeling community and actually collect data and employ the scientific method, right? Because the list of "scientists" willing to sign on to the same bullshit, laughable-on-its-face theory (CO2 is a toxin!!!!!111) that you've apparently signed on to is shrinking, shrinking, shrinking by the hour. Because, dumbass, the world is getting colder. And it sucks far worse than any imaginary wet dreams you've had about "global warming". You continue to spew Co2 into the atmosphere, the world will get hotter. Simple. You certainly are simple, retard, because there's no evidence that CO2 is a causal factor in global warming. CO2 increases lag climate warming by an average of 800 years, using the same data with which multi-time college dropout Al Gore suckered your dumb ass with his propaganda flick. And why, using the same data again, was the CO2 concentration of the atmosphere 10 times what it is now during the height of the last ice age if your CO2+ = temp+ equation is so clearly sound? The problem with that 44% number is that 56% see global warming as man-made, if I am reading that right. That's disturbing. Because that 56% is dumb enough to believe the global warming hype while the portions of the world are seeing record cold.
Worse, there's not a thing the electorate can do about it. The Congress under Pelosi is drunk with power and they're going to pass whatever the please - voters be damned. One may be able to understand that a few congressional members may be foolish enough to actually believe in the global warming hype, but many are feeling the cold temperatures firsthand. They don't believe it. So the only other explanation is that they are doing what Democrats always do - using this to move money from our hands to someone else's. I don't know how many of you saw this item, as it was pretty much limited dissemination to hard-science publications and a few websites, but Hansen's lab actually published Oct '08 as the warmest October on record for the past 100 years, then had to print a retraction when it turned out that their data was skewed by the fact that the Russian observation sites had all re-sent September's temperature data by mistake.
The punchline is that the error wasn't caught by anyone on Hansen's team. They had to eat crow as it was discovered by a self-appointed anti-global warming watchdog who keeps a website for that sole purpose.
Remember, I spent 32 years processing and analyzing that same global met database, and I don't believe that kind of mistake would occur only once. It is the kind of thing that happens due to systemic bad quality control. How much of the rest of their data is tainted by human error and sloppiness? Heh. This is perversely true in the warped world of Planet Gore (apologies for the theft from NRO), since the warmists make a point of disrespecting scientists like Richard Lindzen, Roy Spencer, John Christy, Freeman Dyson, John Coleman and countless others who dare to point out that their emperor isn't wearing any clothes. I can't help thinking that Hansen's dire warning...
That MMMM BOP! scare was so 1990s. I'm listening to the fuckin' song! Speaking of models, Cheryl Tiegs. No wait, I'm currently reading Greenspan's Age of Turbulence--at the beginning of W's term, when we were running budget surpluses and projecting massive flows into the treasury, Greenspan gave one of his densely worded concurrences that tax cuts would stimulate the economy. Unfortunately, with the 2000 recession, stock market crash, fishy accounting, and loss of business tax revenues due to corporations escaping 35% rates, tax revenues plummeted well below estimates. This negated that surplus/lockbox. Drawing from that, I'd say an economic model's more easily constructed than a climate model. Even so, the economic model was substantially off (which answers the whining about the Bush economy). Posted by: Big Fat Meanie at January 19, 2009 11:19 PM (n2eCn) 119

CO2 is a piss-poor greenhouse gas. It absorbs infrared radiation in only three narrow frequency bands. The wavelengths are 2.7, 4.3 and 15 micrometers. The absorption percentage is very generously estimated at 8 percent, which means 92 percent of all infrared radiation passes right on through without being absorbed. And in truth, two of those frequencies don't get a lot of that wavelength anyways. So the truth is that CO2 absoprtion of IR is only about 4-5 percent. Meaning 95 percent gets passed through. And considering CO2 is such a small component of the atmosphere, it is an even poorer greenhouse gas. So, with all this warming we have had (supposedly) how big of a rise in sea level have we had? It is not measured in meters, not in feet, not in inches, not in centimeters but in millimeters. With all this warming, Sea Level has risen one millimeter! Oh noes, start building Arks, the Flood is coming! But here is the catch. Thermal Expansion. The Seas have also heated and when you heat matter usually its volume expands and thermal expansion explains all or most of the rise. And here is another catch. Heating the seas via convection with hotter atmosphere is inefficient to the extreme. With all heat transfer, radiant heat is the best heating. What does that mean? Solar Radiation, that big thermonuclear fire ball in the sky! There you have it.
