In what would be another unprecedented step, Obama's political staff is deciding whether to create a service organization that would use the vast corps of its grass-roots campaign supporters. As described by one source knowledgeable with the discussions, this nonprofit arm would be used to help victims of natural disasters, but would do so under the Obama umbrella while continuing to build the overall network's massive e-mail database.Unacceptable. Problem is that he already has it organized. They are already flooding congress with emails and phone calls pushing Obama's policies just like they did when flooding radio stations with complaints regarding anyone who disagreed with Obama. In one email request he can mobilize 2 million of his cultists to pressure people to do his bidding, shut down dissent and whatever else he wants to use them for. I am not sure how we fight that without a leader of our own to do the same thing.

Days before he even takes the oath for his first term, Obama said Saturday that the newly created Organizing for America would enlist community organizers around the country to support local candidates, lobby for the president's agenda and remain connected with his supporters from the campaign. The entity will operate from the Democratic National Committee headquarters but will be independent in structure, budget and priorities.

And so on. If Obama had things the way he wants them, no one would like living in our new dictatorship. I believe the man is a control freak (witness his refusal to give up his Blackberry, for but one example). It is his way or the highway, anywhere he can get away with that. Right now, he backs off where he has to, and covers himself with smiles and sweet talk.
If he were dicatator of the world, I think he would be happy in the role. In fact, I think it is his fondest dream.

I fear it's going to come to that. Maybe not immediately or even during his first or even second term. I figure sometime in his 3rd term when unemployment is 30%, inflation is 40%-50% a year (and that's a good scenario) and if we've haven't yet been bailed out by the Chinese or EU when the dollar collapses and our paper's only use is ass-wiping, then the American people will finally say, Fuck It, it's time to take our country back. I don't think politics as usual or running 'good conservatives' is gonna get it done. Marxism needs to be met with a new politics from the Right.

When the roots of a volunteer force are a political campaign, that's what I'd expect it in some manner to continue as, whatever it's stated purpose.
If it doesn't and it doesn't take public money, cool - but even if its aims are altruistic, there's the question of who it helps and who it directs its attention towards. There's also the question of what they consider problems and what sort of help they believe is necessary to address them. That could get political very easily.
The key point, though, is that you could have a vast, permanent civilian force led by the President of the United States (and their loyalty would be more towards Barack, specifically, than it would another possible President) with little to no oversight taking their instructions from him. That worries me.

Having done my fair share of comparative political science, this sounds like the start of the American version of the Japanese "personal support network", which resulted not in fascist oppression and mass death, but rather more venal forms of governmental excess... corruption, "pay to play" contracts, graft, and garden-variety personality cults.
Of course, these things can backfire... look up Tanaka Kakuei, the Japanese equivalent of Richard Nixon, for a glimpse into what might be Obama's future.

I'm really not worried about this, though if there is an even greater increase in political intimidation that goes unanswered then it's bad. Even if it does get bad, we can always count on the fact that, and I hate to say it, that the military can bail us out. There was another fellow, a long, long time ago who started with a band of merry men, loyal to him...they organized rallies, put on fundraisers, got in people's faces, and helped their guy achieve power. Then, when the time was right, he got the whole of the nation's military to swear a new oath, an oath of fealty not to the country, nor its people, nor to its constitution, rather an oath of loyalty to him and him alone. It was done for "patriotic and security reasons" -- at least that's how the plan was sold. Of course this meant that any military person or unit who even criticized this person was guilty of treason and under the code of military justice could be tried and executed -- it wasn't that hard to find them guilty. The rest of the citizenry went along (and soon themselves were under the same onus of proving their loyalty at the risk of being labeled treasonous and subversive), because for their own protection they had no guns -- and even if they did, their guns would have been no match for the military's. Besides, their media was daily showing them how much more glorious life was getting for them...and how they would soon get payback from the world which they had been told hated their country and wanted to see it weak. And truth be told, their economic/living conditions had gotten so bad in their eyes that they were desperate for someone to give them good news and a chance at living a bit better that when this fellow came along, he was wildly popular with many.
And of course, there are many people who conveniently forgot all about this fellow and exactly how he rose to power, and many who reasoned away the idea of it ever happening to their own country ever -- as they were not, could not be anything at all like those people -- national "character" and all. Such a thing would of course be stopped right off the bat in their country, if it ever dared to even try...

#148 -- hey, I've not only got kids to think of, I've got critters as well, so while the irony of going to Canada isn't lost here I really don't want to sit back and watch my property reappropriated -- or my horses going to Canada (or Mexico) via slaughterhouse bound trailer thanks to some animal rights agenda wanting to make owning them harim (or so blasted expensive that only Bo Derek could afford them) here in the States. The key point, though, is that you could have a vast, permanent civilian force led by the President of the United States (and their loyalty would be more towards Barack, specifically, than it would another possible President) with little to no oversight taking their instructions from him. That worries me.
Well, unless it's used for illegal purposes, there is no problem. There's nothing wrong with asking people to volunteer - let's just wait and see what form this takes. Comparing it to the SA is a bit much. I admit it could end up like Putin's "Nashi" movement, but on the other hand, maybe the groups mobilized against him in a vehement way are more of a threat - just read these comments.

Hitting up a few people for votes, sending a couple of e-mails and calling talk shows to shout down the opposition is a far cry from actually going somewhere and doing something. The first time he calls out the masses and 27 people show up, that will be that.
Eventually, the newspapers will realize that scandals will help their circulation and the bottom line. They'll start reporting again.

Sure, we'll still have a democracy, but not in the sense that the huddled masses have any independence from the government and the freedom to exercise that independence. The second time, I went through the same thing, and this is almost verbatim.

And we had a conversation, no conflict, it was honest debate, this is with a young woman, and then the older woman (older than my mother) came up, and started to hard ass me with the "you want to deny people health care?" stuff.
I accepted her initial harang, and then explained that, socialism ignores supply and demand.
She said it was a non-sequitor (actually I think she said it was nonsencse) and I responded, that no, it's not. I Like the Cadillac CKS but I don't have one, cuz there aren't enough, she said something like "then make more of those cars" and I said, not everyone likes it, and I have to pay more cuz not everyone wants what I want.
We had a nice and reasonable conversation. Then the rather large black man bumped me, I bumped him back, and he could have eaten my liver if he had a dull rock, but I wasn't gonna back down, so what he did?
He DID grab the ladies (who were perfectly respectable to me) by the arms and lecture them about not wasting their times and he got QUITE loud in his verbal abuse of the ladies.
