Life on Mars? Some Scientists Claim Methane Haze Around Red Planet Must Be Produced by Martian Microbes

Eitherthat or space cows:

ALIEN microbes living just below the Martian soil are responsible for a haze of methane around the Red Planet, Nasa scientists believe.
The gas, belched in vast quantities in our world by cows, was detected by orbiting spacecraft and from Earth using giant telescopes.

Nasa are today expected to confirm its presence during a briefing at their Washington HQ.

And the find is seen as exciting new evidence that Martian microbes are still alive today.

I think this is bunk, pushed by either crank or at least incautious scientists. The evidence seems to be that methane is usually produced by volcanoes, but there are no active volcanoes on Mars, and voila... alien life.

I'd wait to check to see what else might be producing methane before jumping to this big conclusion.

It doesn't help that this is being reported by the headline-happy Sun.

Thanks to Circa.

17 I like to study about the un-know. Scientists really do stay within facts of discovery for the explained. There is nothing new under the sun, but there many things we can't explain... Prehistory is anonymous, but there are many evidences of intelligent human habitation. That is something I have been exploring.

18 So if Mars' whisp of methane is caused by vast civilizations of socially cooperative and mutually nurturing alien microbes, what awaits us on known balls of methane Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune? (I'm not leaving out Pluto to be a planet prick, it's just that it's not a gas planet)

Mark me down for subterranean cows raised by a benevolent species. I've seen no evidence that disproves my theory.

This is reason enough for a manned mission to Mars, well actually, any reason is good enough for me, but I digress

This has a lot of implications though. Let's open up the theoretical Pandora's Box here.

Manned mission to Mars succeeds. Last I heard, at our fastest speeds on vessels capable of carrying humans safely, a trip to Mars would take around two years. So after two years of being holed up on a ship with two or three other people (unless they pull "Rocket Man" and have everyone go to sleep, which I'm pretty sure we haven't perfected the tech for) they FINALLY reach the Red Planet. Lots of "if"s and "maybe"s in there that I'm not gonna bother delving into.

Best case scenario: group makes it to Mars orbit, starts setting up stuff. Mission goes down to Mars surface, has a look around, perhaps does some stuff, "I claim this land in the Name of the Earth", that sort of thing. Go back to orbit and get in the ship (which is gonna be a task in and of itself, nowhere near as easy as getting off the Moon was), another two years getting back to Earth.

That's just the little bit we see from cracking open the lid and having a peek. Miss Pandora has a lot more in store for us if we decide to turn the box over and start dumping stuff out.

This is, of course, assuming we can even pull this off. Do we even have the capability to make a rocket that can carry enough fuel on its own to make the two year journey, TWICE, and sustain three or four humans for that time?

Am I overthinking this?

Turn off that light.

30 One more thing! The Orbs are unexplainable, but they leave evidence. We really need to be open minded. For the past 4-5 years I have caught Orbs on film in certain locations with frequency. Many others have photographed and filmed these sources of energy, and some scientists will still disclaim. There is life in other dimensions that certainly has been proven.

There have been too many good scientists that have disappeared and or their files and documentations destroyed or confiscated, because they chose to expound on their research and discoveries. I would be afraid too.

As I said above, such a discovery does no such thing.  I believe that if we are completely alone in the universe (insert Douglas Adams quotes about "big" here), that indicates we're a mistake and/or the result of mind-boggling randomness that actually argues against the presence of a creator.

See, there's a necessary word missing from Genesis that would need to be there for this disproving to occur... "only". As in "God ONLY created the things on Earth."

Do I believe in life elsewhere? I've actually never thought about it. It's not important. That's one thing I've noticed in the Bible - it only really lists things it considers important to its message. The long, tedious geneologies of the OT and the nearly-endless reciting of laws were considered important and still are (such as tracing the geneology of Jesus to assure his prophecied ancestry, for one, among other things... I've regularly seen it used to support an Earth age estimate as well, though that one catches a lot of flak from you-know-who), but there are sections where they say "Other stuff happened too but it's not really important, everything you absolutely need is written here already".

Of course, the simple rebuttal of that lefty argument is to observe that God might have omitted some irrelevant stuff from Genesis, namely the creation of other worlds.

44 'Titan's thick cloudy atmosphere is mostly nitrogen, like Earth's, but may contain much higher percentages of "smog-like" chemicals such as methane and ethane. The smog may be so thick that it actually rains "gasoline-like" liquids.'

As it being colder than a witch's tit there, and witch's tits to be known incubators of bacterial sludge, Titan must be teeming with life... according to science.

As for lighting a match, Ive seen what that does in the movie Evolution.

Trapped methane deposits?  naw, could never happen.  it's not like that happens here.  oh wait, natural gas?

47 I was talking to a friend yesterday who started spouting this stuff. It's REALLY important to a certain breed of agnostic scientist to be right about this. I guess evangelism is a personal calling.

Just because you prove to your satisfaction that your concept of someone else's (someone beneath you intellectually, of course) concept of God is false does not mean there is no God.

However, if I destroy the planet by buying an SUV, I might be convinced that there is no God. Or that he's really wimpy.

It'd be funny if St. Peter himself took one of these guys aside and said, "you know all that stuff you discovered- quarks, evolution, other planets, Big Bang, etc. which proved there's no God? Well, that IS God. We dumbed it down enough to put in a book for farmers to understand, but we've never been able to make it simple enough for you scientists. Sorry about that..."

48 So I guess when the Huygens probe descended into the atmosphere of Jupiter's moon Titan, and found methane and then landed on the shores of a sea of methane, that is proof positive that there is life on Titan.

Sloppy sloppy science on this one.  My best guess is that some crank is doubling down on his theory of microbes on Mars and wants to gin up support for the theory and put his name on the record for "discovery".

Not that there may not be significant life on Mars, the jury is still out.  However trying to base a firm claim of evidence of life solely on methane is ridiculous.

But "science" often claims hypotheses to be fact.  That's when I want to spit and throw things at them.  Losers.  Don't get me wrong, I love science and am fascinated by it, but I think scientists, like politicians, democrats and movie stars, take themselves and their personal opinions too seriously and forget their purpose.

56 This is the biggest crock going. It's a pathetic attempt to keep exobiology going as a real science when there isn't a minute shred of evidence for life in the galaxy which isn't on or related to earth. These are a bunch of turds hanging on thanks to Carl Sagan, Nasa's Rasputin.

John Murray — a member of the Mars Express European space probe team — believes the mini-Martians may be in a form of suspended animation and could even be REVIVED.

Well, if it was in suspended animation why would they be emitting all this damn Methane which suddenly is a sure sign of life?

Congress should make a rule as part of NASA's funding that projects to other planets should be chiefly concerned with terraforming. There's plenty of life in this galaxy already and it's going to need more room. That should be Nasa's primary concern now.

Wouldn't that be a conflict of interest, though? I mean, most of the NASA folk are hardcore leftists, and the typical leftist trype is that humanity is a blight upon an otherwise-pristine world... would they really want to spread that blight to other worlds that may or may not have life of their own to also be ruined?

Not that conflicts of interest have ever stopped them before, mind you....

60 Wow, there seems to be some real hatred for scientists from some people on here.  Not all scientists think that the world revolves around them, and they're definitely not anti-religion.  I'm quite religious, I'm as scientist, and I work at NASA.  I know that a lot of people don't like the idea of NASA because it's a messed up bureaucracy, but those are the people at the top.  The people on the ground are good people who are doing good work.  Whether you think that it's important or not is a different story, but to make general statements about "scientists" is pretty weak.

As far as finding life on another planet disproving God, I can't see why it would.  As someone mentioned above, Genesis relates to Earth.  If it related to everything, we'd look up and see nothing.

Posted by: prolix at January 15, 2009 01:16 PM (Q5asM)

61 I put a lot of methane on Titan -- oceans of the stuff.  It gathers into oceans because I made it rather cold on Titan.  Nothing has ever lived on Titan.

I am not telling you whether life has ever been on Mars.  But please note the variety of climates on your planet in which life is found, including temperatures ranging from below that at which water freezes to above that at which water boils.  Now note that you have not found life on Mars.  If you find markers for life, such as evidence of water, carbon dioxide, or methane, and you are tempted to declare life on Mars, consider your logic again.  Because if one says:
"A causes B.  I find B.  Therefore, there must be A."
he could be in error.

Further, given the variety of places on your planet in which life is found, you may infer that if life ever did in fact exist on Mars, it would still be there in some form. If you do not find it, you should assume it never existed rather than that it was destroyed (while the evidence for it was not).

69 Last I heard, at our fastest speeds on vessels capable of carrying humans safely, a trip to Mars would take around two years.

Your orbital mechanics is a bit rusty, back to school with you! It would take two years if you launched at the wrong time, when Earth and Mars are farthest apart. It only takes 6 months if you launch at the right time.

A manned mission is completely possible with current technology, but the financial and political will is missing. Humans will eventually land on Mars but it won't be anytime soon.

As for methane on Mars and other planets, it depends on what form of methane was detected. Sure, other planets have methane but they don't have one of several biological methane products. I'm waiting for NASA to announce what form of methane they found and if it is elemental or biological in origin.

Why must every public discussion of astrobiology involve the inevitable argument that science is out to disprove the existence of a God? Science aims to explain the unknown, to explore our universe and gain knowledge. It has absolutely nothing to do with religion. If life is confirmed to exist on Mars then any religious fan could simply say their God created those organisms for us to find, thereby maintaining their belief in religion while marveling at scientific discoveries.

74 In the unlikely event that they ever find life, or even the precursors of life, on Mars you can be sure that they'll immediately declare the whole planet to be a 'fragile ecosystem' and it will promptly be certified as the first extraterrestrial wildlife sanctuary. Thus forever eliminating the possibility of ever terraforming that barren rock and actually making it habitable in a few thousand years.

75 Exobilogy is a broad term which is suppose to encompass the application of the sciences to the origin of life. In reality it pretty much does nothing but an attempt by a bunch of guys trying to get their names in the papers and science books by finding life outside of AND not related to Earth. After all if they got to Mars and found microbes exactly like ones on Earth it would be pretty damn hard to prove they didn't come from here wouldn't it?

All this would be so bad except for how much damn money they waste.
Do you know how much money Nasa spends to "triple sterilize" everything to make sure we don't pollute other planets with our microbes and perhaps destroy indigenous life there? You know, the ones nobody can find?
That was Carl Sagan's bright idea BTW.  Apparently we live a on small blue speck in space but we have to spend many billions to protect even small specks somewhere else that no one can find except for their farts.

I'm not a christian so I really do not understand the argument that aliens invalidate god. Can some one explain that one to me? I mean it is god we are talking about here, the dude who supposedly created a vast, unending universe but only decided to populate a single planet? What's that about?

I am a Christian and I don't think the proof (I said PROOF) of extraterrestrial life invalidates God.  There are probably believers and athiests alike who believe it invalidates God, but the so-called athiests seem to be the most hysterical about it.

77 Your orbital mechanics is a bit rusty, back to school with you! It would take two years if you launched at the wrong time, when Earth and Mars are farthest apart. It only takes 6 months if you launch at the right time.

Thanks, figured I was out of date at the very least.

Why must every public discussion of astrobiology involve the inevitable argument that science is out to disprove the existence of a God? Science aims to explain the unknown, to explore our universe and gain knowledge. It has absolutely nothing to do with religion.

While at base you are correct, many of the "more prominent scientific minds of the day" have made it so. In "science" at it is most commonly, most publicly portrayed today, it is constantly at odds with the very basic concepts of religion and faith, because these "prominent" scientists espouse the most extreme points of view regarding the issues where religion and science do not agree.

It's a rather vicious cycle, especially on those scientific minds who do not fit into the mold of their more prominent, more humanist peers. I know and have known several who fall into this beleaguered category... viewed with skepticism or suspicion by religious people who don't know them well because of their association with science, but disdained by their "betters" in the scientific community for "clinging to religion" in the face of their "proof" against the truth of such.

"Is there life on Mars?"

No, but NASA's budget depends on keeping hope alive. It's a fund raising gimmick. Over the years we've gone from the possibility of advanced Martian civilizations covering the planet, all the way down to trying to scrounge up a microbe or two, but the idea is still being milked for all it's worth. Next stop on the life on Mars gravy train: a bold attempt to find the precursors of life deep within the Martian soil! Spare me the expense.

They're your tax dollars on this wild, Martian, goose chase, but you've got the cash to spare, even in this economy, whether you like it or not. The folks at NASA are smarter than you are and they have a lot of experience at milking Uncle Scam for your money. They propagandize well. The government believes that it needs your money more than you do, and you'd just spend it on something stupid anyway, like paying for your kids' education.
