A Tribute to Ricardo Montalban (and overnight open thread/quilting discussion/virtual online orgy/group hug/circle jerk/you name it) (genghis)

Inclusiveness. That’s what we’re all about in the Obamassic Period. Or is it the Obametaceous Period? Let’s let the scientists work this out. We have more important things to discuss. Such as the passing of Ricardo Montalban. Yes, it’s posted over in the Top Headlines, but Mr. Montalban was practically everywhere in the late ‘70’s-early ‘80’s, so he deserves a more prominent sendoff.

Some highlights:

”As he approached midlife in the 1960s, Montalban made numerous guest appearances on television shows including "The Untouchables" and "The Lieutenant," eventually landing a recurring role as Damon West on the popular medical drama "Dr. Kildare."”

“During this period, Montalban secured his place in science-fiction history playing the evil but charismatic Khan in the first season of "Star Trek."”

“Montalban's dignified demeanor and rich accent added flair to the small screen on a number of television shows. It also established him as a popular pitchman for Maxwell House Coffee and Chrysler.”

Some vids below the fold. (’76 Chrysler Cordoba, Maxwell House, Fantasy Island and of course The Wrath of Khan)

6 Man I loved Fantasy Island.  I used to come screaming downstairs whenever it was on, and plop my ass in front of the tube.  Looking back it probably had more to do with what else was on, but hey, it brings back some fond memories.

Don't forget his hysterical performance in the first Naked Gun.  His scenes in the beginning with Leslie Nielsen, when Moltanban is going on about his plans for the city, oblivious to Nielsen frantically trying to retrieve the pen (that's impervious to everything but water) from Montalban’s aquarium, are a scream.   I lose it every time when Montalban, not paying attention to what Nielsen is doing behind his back, says something like “Can you imagine what the city will be like then lieutenant?” and a second later Nielsen pulls a blowfish off his finger and jams it into his nose, letting out a “Yaaaaaaawwwww!!!”  And Montalabn, assuming Nielsen is agreeing with him, goes “You BETYCHA!”

I lose it every time I watch that scene.  RIP Ricardo.

12 I just found out that he was the first to sing "Baby, It's Cold Outside".  He did it with Esther Williams in "Neptune's daughter".  How come he never gets credit for that?

Weirdly, that song lead to the creation of Al-Qaeda!  Bear with me.

In 1948 the nut job from Egypt that would later create the Muslim Brotherhood, (which lead to AlQaeda) was visiting the United States and in Colorado attended a church social.  The jerk was digusted at the way the men danced with the women (as opposed to his preffered repressed homosexual way of men dancing with men like in Islamic societies).  He thought the whole thing was revolting and indicatecd the perversions of the West.  The song that the couples were enjoying?  Baby, It's Cold Outside!

But the ad gets authenticity points for the background music: the second movement of Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquэn Rodrigo, an actual dewd from Spain.

49 Observations about Space Seed

Lt McGivers is a 20th century Earth historian and Kirk observes she doesn't do much around the ship. Yup, a real demand for that specialty in outer space Jim, did you think she would come in handy if you found an undiscovered Beatles recording session tape out there?

Kirk REALLY has to do something about security on the Enterprise. McCoy leaves scalpels mounted openly on the wall for Khan or anyone else who could be dangerous to pick up as a handy weapon. Why not leave a bedside phaser for the comfort of the patient too. He lets a man who's already been discerned to be highly intelligent and possibly meglomaniacal browse through the ship's data banks for his pleasure. Why not give him your ATM pin # too Jim, he might want to really enjoy himself on the next shore leave. The Auxiliary Control room isn't even watched half the time, letting Khan and his crew walk right in and take the ship. This laxity in security let various other baddies hijack the Old E, even the Space Hippies had their turn at trying to murder the entire crew and jack the ship.

Khan was supermuscular, devastatingly handsome, and brilliant. Couldn't he come up with a better pickup line to McGivers than "sit and entertain me". I guess Khan was too classy to say "bend over and spread 'em"

Why did Kirk go to fight Khan in the Engineering room? Khan is 5 times stronger than him, but so is Spock. I guess nothing in the galaxy can defend the Flying Kirk Leg Kick

Posted by: kbdabear at January 15, 2009 05:40 AM (miw86)

50 46 That car looks tight.

Looks being the key word. As an American car of the 70s, the interior squeaks and rattles became apparent as soon as the indash 8-track jammed. Engine pre-ignition kicked in when you started to overtake a bicycle, and the ball joints started making scary knocking sounds after you ran over the first pebble.

54 Courtesy of YouTube, a not-at-all-ghey slave chorus performs a rompin'-stompin' Ode to Khan in the "Polovtsian Dances" section of Borodin's opera Prince Igor.

The first few minutes of "Polovtsian Dances" are slow, so skip to 3:40 for the splashy, bombastic Hooray For Khan! dance number with kettle drums and effeminate leaping:

Sing songs of glory to Khan! Sing!
Glorify his might, honor Khan!
Khan is glorious! Khan!
Glorious is he, our Khan!
In the brightness of his glory,
Khan is like the sun!
Glory-wise, there is nobody equal to Khan --
Not a one!
The slaves Khan glorify Khan!
We're gonna spread happiness,
We're gonna spread freedom!
Khan's gonna change it,
Khan's gonna lead 'em!

(The last four lines may not necessarily appear in Borodin's original Russian lyrics, but everything before that is a word-for-word translation.)

56 Lessons from Space Seed;

Even if she's a subordinate officer, a woman will turn on you if you forget her name. It's "Marla McGivers", not "Mulva"

Kirk has amazing healing capabilities. About 5 minutes after Khan gave him a nasty case of The Bends, he's up to a knock down fight with a superman.

Phasers, like all weapons, come in handy for killing, disabling, or holding your enemy hostage. Keep your ego in check when you feel like crushing it with your hands to show off.

When exiling a superman to a planet, make sure it's either a lush paradise he'll grow lazy in, or a rock he'll starve to death on. Putting him on Planet Outback just turns him into Crocodile Dundee with a bad attitude. He'll be back to bite you in the ass in 15 years.

I just happened to be thinking about McGoohan because I found out about AMC's "remake" of The Prisoner about two days ago; I had a great deal of respect for him and tried to catch whatever shows/films he appeared in...

The Car: I don't think I'll ever have a Lotus 7 (they're out of production, although similar cars are out there), but someday I want to get KAR 120C as a license number!

The last episode of The Prisoner made a big impression on me-- not just for its own sake but also because it was the last episode-- this was back in the '60s, and I had never seen a TV series with an ending before! It was very disorienting...

The news breaking this morning is that the Obama-bot nominee for treasury did not make an “honest” mistake (which I found hard to believe in the first lace). The news is that not only did he know that he was supposed to pay those SS taxes himself, but the IMF had given him money to pay them with.

They are trying to push this shit through based on this phony economic crisis that, other than the real estate industry and mortgage banks, has been a media creation. But he has the support of Lindsey Grahamnasty, RINO at large.

I'm going to echo JJ and Richard in giving love to Montalban for Battleground.

I always love how in the 60s and 70s actors, producers and directors decided that war movies should be more "realistic", like they were the sole arbiters of what that meant.  One of the things I learned from watching Battleground on TCM is that many of the stars were WWII vets (i.e. the character who loses his teeth before the fight, lost his teeth for real when his destroyer was attacked in the Pacific).  If the classic war movies were "realistic" enough for the vets who starred in them (and made up a large part of the audience), they are good enough for me.

98 Golem14, Bless you. I had Lotus experience. Ended with an electrical fire. To be expected. I love them anyway.

I had copies of all Prisoner episodes as a teen. Used to freak the peeps out with marathons. Had the 'free man' bit on the answering machine. Thank you, Patrick!

"As for McGoohan, for those of you young enough to remember, his Disney Revolutionary War series "Scarecrow" was just released on DVD..."

I didn't see the movie, but I know the song:

"Scare-CROWWW. Scare-CROWWW,
The soldiers of the King fear his name.
Scare-CROWWW. Scare-CROWWW,
The country folk all love him just the same..."

I'll have to pick up that DVD...
