It's a one minute clip which contains several full "paragraphs" of information (and claims). It's all perfectly in context.

This asshole is actually contending that merely posting a video of someone's unhinged rants may be defamatory.

And as far as his claim that our troops are monsters -- not born monsters, mind you, but made into monsters, as if that makes it so much better?

War results in a lot of bad things happening. Among them is the effect on some people of dealing death. Yeah, some soldiers turn into monsters. Most do not.

This guy went there, he had his own experiences. I don't know what they were. There have been some reported incidents of atrocious things happening, like the rape and murder of 15 year old Abeer Al Janabi and the murder of her family near Mahmoudiyah a couple of years ago. That is in no way typical of soldiers, who overwhelmingly treat Iraqis with forbearance and respect, but there are more incidents of murder than are reported in the press. Sometimes it's just a stupid kid being reckless and callous. Sometimes it's a bad unit culture and lack of moral leadership. That is, and always has been, a fact of war. Too bad if you can't handle it and want to cling to a glorious myth.

93 I haven't filed stripped an AK-47 since Korea 1987 but i think you can remove the bolt without removing the bolt carrier and cosmetically it would look like a completely assembled rifle.

I am just pointing this out because if my memory is correct his story may be true and in that case he should be court-martialed for placing the lives of those Iraqis and his fellow soldiers in danger.

One of the things you do is attack your enemy's myths about himself. If the belief is that US soldiers are generally decent and liberators, then you attack that with stories of atrocities, and you make the accuser a former soldier who is sickened by all of the atrocities and lies.

That is what was done in Vietnam; and that is the same playbook the IVAW is using. One thing hindering them is the fact that this tactic has been used before and proved a lie; one of the things helping them is that many people are willing to believe the lie.

Jesse MacBeth and Scott Beauchamp were the anti-American's (domestic and foreign) spokesmen. They failed with them because the tactic is old and obvious - so obvious that even a bureaucracy can counter it. This guy is their next pawn put forward. My guess is that he will fail also.

His story may be true in one instance - where he claims that on his on accord he removed a bolt from a sleeping soldier's weapon. The change weight probably wouldn't be noticed by an unskilled soldier. But a whole company? A hundred plus bolts lying in the dirt somewhere? The bolt carrier might hide the fact that bolt was missing but, we are to assume not one soldier in an entire company would chamber a round before patrol (when they would surely notice a lack of function in the weapon)? And what happened when the command finally discovered what happened to the weapons? I'm betting it was a prank like he relayed in the first part of his story that got him booted.

This guy wants to get out of everything - his commitment to serve first and now he wants to get out of the sh*t storm his stupid rant may cause.

102 Assuming that it's true (BIG assumption), not only did he risk these Iraqi soldiers' lives in combat, he risked their lives in training. What are the chances that 100 AK bolts would be returned to the exact weapon that they were fitted to? IIRC, AKs are headspaced by filing and fitting the bolt to the trunnion. Put the wrong, non-headspaced bolt in an AK and you run the risk of the weapon BLOWING UP IN YOUR FACE.

My sockpuppet was thinking about removing the bolt carrier rather than just the bolt, so I think it would be possible to remove the bolt and not have it be immediately obvious, but I'm still not buying that nobody in this tool's platoon objected, or that nobody in an entire Iraqi company (100+ men) noticed.

You would be surprised how amny times I heard this (or something similar) in the run-up to Desert Shield/Storm. When we were preparing to deploy, we had a rash of soldiers try to get out of going. The most common excuse was, "I didn't know I was going to have to go to war. I came into the Army for money for college." My standard response was to ask them WTF they thought armies did. Did they not learn in school that armies fight wars?

Needless to say, every one of their asses deployed with us.

All you have to do is look at the photos of the troops handing out books and crayons and soccer balls and see the expressions on the kids faces (ours and theirs) to understand who and what our current crop of young military people are.

But, then, since I was raised in the backwoods and hills and didn't even start hunting with a real gun until I was 9, I probably didn't know enough to realize there might be something wrong with the shooty thingy. Thinking back though, maybe that was why I got such crappy scores on the range.
