Press Oddly Quiet About Would-Be IRS Head's Forgetful Posture on Taxes; But Oh, By the Way, It Was Huge News That Joe the Plumber Had a Tax Lien

Instapundit, quoting Treacher:

A plumber owed $1,000 in taxes that he didn’t even know about… …and it was headline news!

That was different. Joe the Plumber, unlike Geithner the Would-Be SecTreas and Head IRS Collections Agent, had to be "vetted." I mean, we can't just have anyone asking questions of our elected leaders. These people need to be investigated and exposed.

But the SecTreas? No big deal.

Those with power don't need to be vetted. Those who question those with power do. Obviously.

More on yet another story the media just doesn't seem very interested in.

"While I do not know Mr. Geithner well, I do understand honest mistakes," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Tuesday afternoon. "Since the mistakes in his tax filings came to his attention, Mr. Geithner has paid all taxes due, including all interest. I continue to believe he has the skills the President will need to confront the challenges of our nation's economic crisis and I will support his nomination."

Can't wait for all the "honest mistakes" Geithner will make as Treasury Secretary.

I guess Geithner's failure to catch any of Citibank's shinanigans during his tenure as head of the New York Fed was just another "honest mistake" too.

Is this guy married?  I'm self-employed and my wife reminds me to pay about 10 times every quarter.  If Geithner needs some help, I can show him where the website is and he can schedule payments in advance.

He should also switch to TaxCut for his taxes.  It does a really good job of reminding you that you owe self-employment taxes when you fill out your paperwork.  Apparently, whoever did his taxes wasn't really clear on that whole thing.

But I guess my question is: if he's such a financial genius, how come he made such supposedly "common mistakes" as to not realize his own paycheck was taxable? And the guy that wants to supervise the Director of the IRS doesn't know about Employer Taxes???

The level of fail exhibited by Gaithner, and it's based only on what we know - not on all that he did that we don't know, is quite stunning. He fucks up, intentionally or not, at both the personal and professional level.

Yet somehow he's considered brilliant by his peers.

Oh, wait. That explains everything. Peers. Fuck-ups in arms. It's as if the government model is rather than purge the system of those who are most responsible for getting us in the mess we're in that those very dunderheads should be hired and promoted. Foxes watching the henhouse.

35 The Obama team did a good job burying this news on the day Clinton's nomination hearing stole the headlines.  According to Byron York at the Corner, rank-and-file Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee didn't learn about Geithner's tax issues until 2:30 PM yesterday.  Ranking Republican Senator Grassley knew about it since mid-December, but apparently didn't leak to the press.

43 Hmmm...

I seem to remember something about Obama threatening promising to have the IRS do your taxes for you during the Dem primaries.

Obama and Biden will ensure that the IRS uses the information it already gets from banks and employers to give taxpayers the option of pre-filled tax forms to verify, sign and return.

I thought it was a bad idea when I first heard it but now you say Geithner's gonna be the Sec Treas ? That changes everything.  I would completely trust Geithner to do my taxes for me.

I mean, he's a freaking financial genius.  Everybody says so.

Overall this is some pretty loose shit on the side of the Dems.  Proposals like the one above indicate that they are fully aware of the need to keep the populace as oblivious and thus compliant as possible when it comes to the government hoovering out their pockets.

With the ass-raping of the tax payers that they have planned, I wouldn't think that high profile exemplars like Geithner or Rangel sending the message of "taxes for thee but not for me" are terribly helpful right now.  How much more difficult are they going to make it on themselves to actually collect these taxes if the idea that there is a double standard becomes widespread?

Posted by: Deety at January 15, 2009 03:54 AM (1jglO)

44 It's quite simple. Reid says that Geithner is to smart to fail. The MSM don't think Joe the Plumber is smart, so he can fail.

That's why he's getting the stories for Pajamas Media in Gaza and showing up some veteran reporters in the process.

Posted by: Michael Fidanza at January 15, 2009 08:04 AM (L6ezw)

45 It came out this morning that the place where this jerk worked not only repeatedly told all their people that they had to pay their self-employment taxes, but gave them extra money in able to be able to do so.  So, it doesn't work that this was a mistake.  This guy took the money and ran, knowing that it would have no consequences for him.
