| Rice And Henderson To Baseball Hall Of FameRickey Henderson was a no doubter for the Hall and for Jim Rice it's about damn time. Rickey Henderson sped his way into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot Monday, and Jim Rice made it in on his 15th and final try. Henderson, baseball's career leader in runs scored and stolen bases, received 94.8 percent of the vote from the Baseball Writers' Association of America, well above the 75 percent needed. Rice, among baseball's most feared hitters in the late 1970s and early 1980s, got 76.4 percent of the vote after falling just shy with 72.2 percent last year. "The only thing I can say is I'm glad it's over with," Rice said. "I'm in there and they can't take it away." The undisputed standard for leadoff hitters, Henderson became the 44th player elected in his first year of eligibility. Rice was only the third elected by the BBWAA in his final year, joining Red Ruffing (1967) and Ralph Kiner (1975). The pair will be inducted into the Hall during ceremonies on July 26 in Cooperstown, N.Y. Former Yankees and Indians second baseman Joe Gordon, elected posthumously last month by the Veterans Committee, will also be inducted. "I feel great about it. It's been a long time coming," said Henderson, who wanted to be a football star before excelling in pro baseball. "I was nervous, waiting."Odds makers in Vegas have set the over/under on Henderson referring to himself in the third person during his induction speech at 27. I'm taking the over. How many days until pitchers and catchers? And while we're talking about balloting, don't forget to vote for Ace in the Weblog Awards. Comments1

Glad for both of them. I recall Rice's stats were perhaps a bit on the edge, and he probably did not get any goodwill from the voters. But I sure remember how feared he was as a hitter. When he was in his heyday, I don't know that there was anyone playing that a pitcher would have less rather had coming up to the plate. He was a very intimidating presence who would crowd the plate and pitchers were afraid to throw inside to him; it helped set the whole tone for those Boston teams. Anyone remember him breaking a bat with a checked swing? Nasty. Can't be too soon for pitchers and catchers. Posted by: RM at January 12, 2009 05:31 PM (8nB5X) 9
Still no to the #5 all time Strikeout pitcher. 22 year career with 3.12 career ERA.

Bill James, the baseball statistician made the case that basestealers were pretty useless to a team. The season that Henderson got 130 steals, he was also caught stealing 42 times. That means he was on base and not only did the team lose him as a runner, but gained an out in the process.

Ozzie Smith is a Hall of Fame shortstop who played for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1980's. He regarded as an excellent defender, as he had a lifetime fielding percentage of .978.
He was not considered a particularly good hitter, as he had a career batting average of just .262 and he only hit 28 home runs. Smith hit over .300 in only one year. However, he played in St. Louis, and when he took the field would often entertain the crowd with a backflip. Ozzie Smith is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Another shortstop in the 1980's was regarded as an excellent, steady if not flashy, fielder. This shortstop had a career fielding percentage of .976, a difference of .002. This shortstop, however, unlike Ozzie Smith, was a hitter. He had a career batting average of .285, with 185 career home runs, and hit over .300 in 7 of his 20 seasons: .300 in 1980, .319 in 1983, .314 in 1984, .343 in 1987, .311 in 1988, .304 in 1990, and .329 in 1993. If you had polled every General Manager in the game at that time, the overwhelming majority would rather have had this shortstop than Ozzie Smith on their baseball team. The reason for this is that when you look at the overall career of both of these players, the second shortstop was clearly Smith's superior. This shortstop, however, only managed to get 17% of the vote for the Hall of Fame this year. This shortstop is Alan Trammell. 1984 World Series MVP. Should have been 1987 American League MVP, as he was clearly more valuable to the Tigers than George Bell was to the Blue Jays. Furthermore, Trammell got his team to the playoffs that year, Bell didn't. It is criminal that Alan Trammell is not in the Baseball Hall Of Fame. Had he played for the New York Yankees, Yankee fans and media types would have pissed their pants over Trammell not being elected in his first year of eligibility. 17%. The Sportswriters who vote really ought to be ashamed of themselves. Alan Trammell was easily one of, if not THE best shortstop of his generation, and is easily better than the following Hall of Fame Shortstops based on statistics: Luis Aparicio, Dave Bancroft, Rabbit Maranville, Pee Wee Reese, Cal Ripken (.276 is less than .285), Phil Rizzuto (Hello, Yankee Bias), Ozzie Smith, Joe Tinker, Bobby Wallace, John Ward. ALAN TRAMMELL DESERVES A HALL OF FAME INDUCTION. Posted by: Naqamel at January 12, 2009 05:41 PM (UMwMT) 13

Jim Rice in the HOF is a joke.
"When he was in his heyday, I don't know that there was anyone playing that a pitcher would have less rather had coming up to the plate." Then you would think they would have walked him a little more often. The year he hit 46 homers, he still walked only 58 times while striking out 126 times. His career OBP was .352 (586th). Couldn't field, couldn't run (witness not only his lack of stolen bases but tendency to ground into double plays). Had above average power, but that alone should hardly qualify you as a HOFer. We had Ricky here in San Diego in 1996 and 2001. For all of his quirks (and believe me, there are a lot), he had a great influence on the other players when it came to plate discipline. The whole team got better at taking bad pitches. Lots more walks, and much better team OBP. I also had the priviledge of attending the game where he got his 3,000th career hit. It was also the last game of Tony Gwynn's career - Ricky was at 2,999 but didn't want to play and distract from Tony's day, but Tony insisted he get out there. Not very often you get to see two great milestones in the careers of two great players in one night.

As every informed baseball fan knows by now, Rice's induction to the HOF is an outright travesty. He immediately becomes the worst non-pitcher inducted during the modern era (I say that because Bruce Sutter is probably still worse), and his Hall case is a joke, a pathetic joke. He was merely above-average for his career, and the fact that he went in -- while vastly more deserving players like Blyleven, Raines, and Trammell still wait on the outside -- is as damning an indictment of the BBWAA and the HOF voting process as anyone could offer. Even Andre Dawson, who defines the "cusp" as far as I'm concerned, is a far more preferable HOF candidate. (The Hawk makes up for his offensive liabilities with solid-to-great defense at the premium position of CF for much of his career. Dawson and Raines are both also hurt immensely by the fact that their best years came in Montreal, where nobody paid a lick's worth of attention.)
It's just this simple: anyone who thinks Rice is a statistically meritorious HOF inductee is flat-out ignorant about what makes a valuable baseball player. Jay Bell got two votes this year and he has a BETTER HOF case than Rice. Neither should be anywhere close to in, of course. Posted by: Jeff B. at January 12, 2009 06:21 PM (rqhpn) 35
If Jim Rice is in the HOF, Dale Murphy should be. After all those years on shitty ATL teams he deserves admission in a "sucks to be him" category. Posted by: payaso at January 12, 2009 06:21 PM (Gn/r1) 36
Naqamel ---
Phil Rizzuto: He was named the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1950 after leading the team to its second consecutive pennant with a .324 batting average; he had been MVP runnerup the previous year. Rizzuto led the AL in double plays three times and in putouts and fielding percentage twice each. His 1,217 career double plays ranked second in major league history when he retired, trailing only Luke Appling's total of 1,424, and his .968 career fielding average trailed only Lou Boudreau's
mark of .973 among AL shortstops. He also ranked fifth in AL history in
games at shortstop (1,647), eighth in putouts (3,219) and total chances (8,14 A popular figure on a team dynasty which captured 10 AL titles in his 13 seasons, Rizzuto played in nine World Series, winning seven. At the time of his last game, he had appeared in the most World Series games ever (52), a record soon surpassed by five of his Yankees teammates. Rizzuto still holds numerous World Series records for shortstops, including the most career games played, singles, walks, times on base, stolen bases, at-bats, putouts, assists and double plays.[1] The man has SEVEN WORLD SERIES RINGS. ALAN TRAMMELL IS NOT BETTER THAN HIM. He was also a broadcaster for FORTY FUCKING YEARS. Posted by: james at January 12, 2009 06:24 PM (BvvXi) 37

Ok, I just compared Phil Rizzutto's Stats with Alan Trammell's and even though at first blush it would seem that Trammell has it all over Phil in every
category imaginable you must keep in mind that Trammell played for Detroit and Phil had a really cool nickname. There's also all of the WS rings that Phil had and don't forget the light of his life Cora. Because of her we were witness to some of the funniest sidebar commentaries in Baseball history. So theres that. Posted by: McLovin at January 12, 2009 07:08 PM (HNS+f) 47

Ozzie Smith is not in the Hall because he did backflips, or because he had a 12-point better fielding percentage than league average, or even because he won THIRTEEN consecutive Gold Gloves. He is there because he was the best defensive shortstop in the past 40 years, possibly ever. If there was a zone rating like UZR available during his career, Smith's score would be off the charts. I can't speak for Alan Trammell, but there is absolutely nothing than can be taken away from Ozzie Smith defensively. He was simply the best at his position--a position that is second only to catcher in defensive importance.
Also, if Jim Rice is in, there aren't just one or two others who should be, but a whole room full of names, starting with Andre Dawson. First Burris, now Rice. I guess mediocrity sells these days. I'm more than a little amused (and depressed) to see people seriously attempting to argue that Phil Rizzuto was a better shortstop than Alan Trammell. Folks, please crunch the numbers for fuck's sake. It wasn't even CLOSE. Also, Trammell was robbed of the 1987 MVP.
I spend so much time on sabermetric sites that I've forgotten how painful it can be to argue baseball with statistical illiterates who think that it somehow bolsters Phil Rizzuto's case to scream "COUNT DA RINGZZZZ!!!" at the top of their lungs. The funniest moment in the History of Baseball was that fucking award ceremony Henderson gave himself at third base when he got the stolen base record. "Now I am the greatest of all time." I think he made himself a trophy and everything. Put some mustard on that hot dog. In addition to Ozzy's defensive brilliance the man could steal him some bases. Enough to rattle pitchers. Ya gotta add that in too. Sure there was that scouting report, "you can knock the bat out of his hands with a well thrown pitch" but he did get better over time. If he had played in the 'roids era, he would've really kicked ass. Posted by: Ronsonic at January 12, 2009 08:42 PM (ywSvi) 57

Have to disagree on Jim Rice. By any objective measure he just does not measure up to HOF standards. The standby argument that guys like Dan Shaugnessy have been using is; "He was the most feared hitter of his time." Even this can easily be debunked by studying the intentional walks issued during the height of his career. There were light hitting back-end of the order guys getting more intentional walks than Rice. He was a very good player, and he should be remembered that way...but HOF...no way! Henderson on the other hand, may very well be the most sure-thing HOF'er ever. He might just have the best argument of almos anyone in the HOF for being in... Rice got in because he was a Red Sox and the major sports network, Every Sox Player Now, pimps for him constantly. A good but not great, hitter gets in because of where he played, not how he played. On the bright side, at least the Red Sox fans lose one of their 1000 reasons to whine.
