Mr. Burris Is Going To Washington

Blago, you magnificent bastard!

Harry "Profile in Courage" Reid has backed down and will seat Roland Burris as Barack Obama's replacement in the Senate.

"Barring objections from Senate Republicans, we expect Senator-designee Burris to be sworn in and formally seated later this week," said a joint statement from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin.

The Senate Democratic Leaders had told Burris last week that he needed to testify before the Illinois House impeachment committee about his relationship with Gov. Rod Blagojevich and submit a signature from Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White certifying his appointment by Blagojevich.

"We have spoken to Mr. Burris to let him know that he is now the Senator-designate from Illinois and as such, will be accorded all the rights and privileges of a Senator-elect," said the joint statement.

Reid and Durbin are singing a very tune today than they were all of two weeks ago. Remember this?

...We say this without prejudice toward Roland Burris’s ability, and we respect his years of public service. But this is not about Mr. Burris; it is about the integrity of a governor accused of attempting to sell this United States Senate seat. Under these circumstances, anyone appointed by Gov. Blagojevich cannot be an effective representative of the people of Illinois and, as we have said, will not be seated by the Democratic Caucus.

Harry shot his big mouth off and wound up hitting himself in the foot. Well played Senator, well played.

Rod Blagojevich 1-Harry Reid 0.

1 If Blago is smarter than Reid, then what does that make Reid?

3 I love it blue on blue. Pass the popcorn. But do the red's have the moxie to make a lot out of this? Reid is the red meat in 2010 in Nevada and we need to make sure that there is a credible candidate to challenge him. The republican's had better seat Burris and then elect Mike Steele or Ken Blackwell to RNC chair.

6 Reid and Dodd are going down in 2010. You can add Burris to the list, but someone has to talk sense into Kit Bond and Charlie Crist needs to run in Florida. Of course, eventually those two idiots in the Dakotas will be tossed also.

Aw, hell. I'll settle for the House.

8 George--

That isn't Springfield hair. Blago refuses to live in the mansion. He gets his hair cut on Oak Street in Chicago.

I take no joy in our country seating a person who didn't have the decency to decline an appointment from a two bit impeached and indicted street thug.

Harry Reid and the democrats were right in trying to deny Burris even if it may have been for the wrong reasons.

18 This entire thing was nothing more then theatrics, they were always going to seat Burris. They just needed to make sure the people noticed all of the faux outrage to the appointment by a corrupt Governor from their own party. If they felt they could have gotten away without a little show then they would have.

Senate Republicans, all of whom were rendered unconcious from fits of uncontrollable laughter, were unable to comment.

The problem I have is that the objections to seating someone seems to be all relative. Our system should have something in place that will prevent this type of scenario in the future.

Like I said before, if Blago would have selected someone who was not as bland and uncontroversial (as far as the state of Illinois goes) as Burris the scenario be a lot different.  What if he had appointed his wife? Jesse Jackson Jr. ? Would they still be arguing the law gave him the power to appoint? I'm sure some loophole would have been found.

How about we don't rush out and try to change the Constitution every time it's politically inexpedient for one side or the other.  Blagojevich hasn't been convicted of anything.  He hasn't even been indicted.

It's pretty clear he's a crook and a scoundrel, but that was no big secret in Illinois.  Now that he's political persona non grata, no one knows him or has ever had any meaningful contact with him and is shocked that he somehow managed to engage in so much corruption right under their noses.

The Arianna Huffington comment, however, was a point well taken.

What makes you think the constituion has to be changed in order to prevent this from happening again? My suggestion thought up in the 10 seconds before I typed it may not be the best recommendation but I'm sure something besides a constitutional amendment is available.

Burris is seated because Obama got on the phone with Dingy Harry and told him to seat him.  John Kass of the Chicago Tribune reports:

"But today’s news is that Obama, often treated by the national media as the gentle Mr. Tumnus of American politics, got privately hardball with Reid over the Tombstone issue.

According a story in the Tribune by Rick Pearson and Mike Dorning, Obama didn’t want the Chicago Way on parade in Washington, less than two weeks before his inauguration, when he formally becomes the agent of the change we can believe in."
