Arab Street Worries: "The Jews Have Gone Crazy"

It's about time they started becoming nervous about our responses to their rage.

Israel may have reached a deterrent moment in its war in Gaza against Iranian-backed Hamas. I spoke with a senior Arab diplomat last night. He told me that the Arab street is afraid that "the Jews have gone crazy."
Yes, it's true. He noted, "Israel has begun to restore its deterrence" in the Arab world. "Hamas miscalculated," he added. They had thought Israel would not attack, but would merely accede to tougher Hamas demands for an improved "Tahdiya," their version of a temporary calm.
This is perhaps one of the more optimistic assessments I have heard from Arab colleagues recently. There is supporting documentation. Hizbullah's immediate public denial yesterday of the Katusha rocket attack from Southern Lebanon against Israel's North and the reports on Lebanese TV of convoys of Lebanese (read: Hizbullah) vehicles moving north in expectation of a major Israeli reprisal strengthens this sense.
It's also notable that Al Jazeera's reportage yesterday avoided interviewing ordinary Gazans. Arab sources in Gaza confided that the public anger is not directed at Israel any more than it is at Hamas.

Via Instapundit. Unrelated, but: This just in -- bureaucrats make for awful businessmen. California state pension money was invested largely in real estate, at the peak of the market.

Oh, and the result is perfectly predictable: Increase taxes on employers.

I'm so glad that Democrats beat back Bush's effort to allow workers' ownership in their own Social Security. That sort of idea would never work. Better to have slacker civil servants making the big decisions.

In related news, Obama, who hasn't even run an office in his life, will be making all the big decisions about the economy for at least four years.

4. he wasted $150 million or so teaching inner city youths to hate their country.

BTW, it's almost as if you are saying that there should be some sort of monetary incentive to get people highly skilled in investing to do actual investing.

First, excellent news regarding the restoration of Israel's deterrent power.

Second, regarding CA's state pension, I just completed a study on municipal bankruptcy for my latest semester...and the taxes of which you speak will more likely be levied by municipalities on their citizens as higher local taxes anin the form of "fees" (disguised taxes, as due to Prop 13, local taxes in CA may not be raised w/o 2/3rd vote), because the California State Pension fund is solely for California state employees, and many municipal employment contracts negotiated by the public employee unions stipulate that the employers will contribute a significant amount to their eventual defined benefits.

So...in short, CA is well and truly screwed, because they are just beginning a cycle of liquidation of real estate (as residents move to flee the higher taxes) and higher taxes, rinse and repeat. The one interesting factor is Vallejo's filing of a Chapter 9 petition, requesting permission to reject the negotiated employment contract...depending on the outcome of this trial, there could be an explosion of Chapter 9 filings based on the vallejo precedent. Though, CAlpers has filed an amicus brief against rejection, so it is pretty unlikely the rejection will be approved.

Anyways...just wanted to flaunt my mad municipal bankruptcy chops to my fellow morons.

So Barry takes some criticism over his plans and he decides to pass it off on Congress to figure it out. If it works out (which it won't) he'll take credit if it doesn't he can say Congress messed with his original plans.

An Hamas leader today articulated the conditions for a "Lull." Israel has to stop fighting, withdraw, open the gates, lift the blockade, etc. The Hamas guy says they won't stop rocketing Israel no matter what, because that is what they have to do.
