Obama Economic Speech

The President-Elect is about to give a "major economic speech" where he'll layout the rationale for his stimulus plan. Needless to say, it's pretty much the same demand side argument we've heard from him over the last year or so.

President-elect Barack Obama said Thursday that the U.S. recession could "linger for years" unless Congress acts to pump unprecedented sums from Washington into the U.S. economy, making his highest-profile case yet on an issue certain to define his early presidency.

"I don't believe it's too late to change course, but it will be if we don't take dramatic action as soon as possible," Obama said in a speech set to be delivered at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, outside Washington. Excerpts from his prepared text were released in advance by his transition team.

"A bad situation could become dramatically worse," he said, painting a dire picture -- including double-digit unemployment and $1 trillion in lost economic activity -- that recalled the days of the Great Depression in the 1930s.

If spending were the key to prosperity, given all the increased spending the federal government has been doing over the last few years, especially over the last year, shouldn't we be rolling in the rainbows and unicorns by now?

Possibly complicating Obama and the Democrats plan, the Chinese don't seem so keen on continuing to play banker to us. Hmmm, I wonder why.

I'll update if anything interesting comes out of the speech but I'm guessing it'll be more scare mongering and demand for huge increases in spending.

1 The money quote from the article:

But China's leadership is likely to avoid any complete halt to purchases of Treasuries for fear of looking like it is torpedoing the chances for a U.S. economic recovery at a vulnerable time, said Paul Tang, the chief economist at the Bank of East Asia here

So, the Chicoms  control our economy, and will continue to  control our economy. Just lovely. However, I'm sure The One and his legions of libtards are  completely OK with that.

2 Massive deficit spending is what Bush did after 9-11 to keep the economy out of recession. Obama is once again tacitly admitting that he (and the Democrats) think Bush was right.

3 Also, I think Obama and the Dems have to talk up catastrophe since the best we can hope for under their plans is a long, deep recession. This way, they can claim they at least staved off Depression.

4 Sure...let's just spend our way out of this -- that would work just swell for my business...for about a month.

However, if the gubmint promises me a Skittles Shitting Unicorn, I might reconsider my current position...oh yeah, they'll also have to toss in a Zombie Goat.

Actually, I would argue it was the tax cuts that kept the economy floating after 9/11.

Tax cuts create wealth, spending can only 'spread it around' for awhile and then what happens when it runs out?

But they'll probably part ways when it comes to Bush's tax cuts.

I think the dems will be doing a lot of things they criticized Bush for doing.

Speech in short:

1. The economy is so bad that life as we know it will cease in a short time unless my socialism plan is passed.

2. We got here because of greedy Wall Street and Bush

3. We need to pass some more laws to make it harder to do business (while keeping the laws that created the problem).

4. We will give jobs to people making high priced alternative energy components and force all you broke taxpayers to buy them.

5. We will create unbridled inflation which will then require huge tax increases.

6. We will force through the new “smart grid” (a code name for building more high voltage lines so CA and NY can get power from cheaper areas and not have to build new plants). The utilities will pay for these lines so the rate payer will pay for them.

Bottom line: We are all hopelessly fucked.

Managing expectations by lowering them.  "If I don't get my stimulus package then the economy will tank and it's not my fault".

I'm gonna try that at work.  "If I don't max out my bonus this year my performance will suffer as a result.  Sorry".

The problem is the type of spending.  Different types of government "investment" yeild different results.

R&D (6.2 - 6.3) spending leads to large, transformal payroll growth.  Bricks and Mortar might lead totemporary,  localized reductions in unemployment; but are not sustainable.  Pure Science (6.1) and Education spending is a crapshoot.  Improvements in the manufacturing sector come from increasing consumer disposable income; through rebates or tax cuts, that lea to durable goods purchasing.  Housing is all about lending rates and practices.

If Obama wants to reward his base; the manufacturirng, education, and urban sectors he needs a package of tax cuts with some urban Bricks and Mortar stuff.  He might as well bring in Jack Kemp to present it.

The transparency and no earmarks stuff is just cover, Congress will rip those off and dive in like hogs on a new bushel of apples.

They don't have to like, but they'll keep on funding us like the crack whore bitches they are; China is export driven primarily by the US consumer market - the moment they stop funding us, the buying capacity drys up (and no more purchase of cheap Chineese goods), thereby China's economy fails into a billion man civil war and their ruling elites swing from lamp posts.

They'll pay.  They'll pay what ever the US tells them to buy.  They can't say no at this point.

Paper tigers they are now.  Expect them to whine bitch and moan all the while signing the checks to Uncle Sam.  They may even try to rattle a sabre or two, but they'll blink.

This is so Californian. The not-in-my-backyard state, on the cultural and technological leading edge... that can't produce enough energy to run itself. No more refineries or nukes here. It's just like us to run extension cords across state lines at ridiculous expense. After all, it's so fucking important to build that high-speed rail line between LA and SFO. Repeat of the same mistakes we made in the 30's.  Until the TARP became a piggybank for everyone and it was improperly used, it was the right thing to do if you look at the proximate cause of the economic turmoil after the 29' crash.

Now we are just compounding the bastardization of TARP with the type of government intervention that history shows extended the depression. Also if Democrats and protectionist Republicans get their way regard to trade agreements, we will really be in for a tough time.

Businesses need to develop through capitalism, supply and demand and not through make work programs.  A business friendly government atmosphere needs to be in place where people won't be totally adverse to taking risks.

That will make the downturn cycle the shortest it can be.

35 Maybe China isn't able to float our debt anymore - their entire GDP is only slightly larger than California's.

Also, the poor monetary policy of Bush, Greenspan, and Snow immediately after
9/11 is going to exacerbate our problems now, and Paulson and Bernanke are even worse. Normally what happens after a market bust is that bad actors (stupid investors, greedy investors, weak investors, the whole gamut) get wiped out. That leaves only the strong and savvy, so the market is actually healthier.

By making money cheap (absurdly low interest rates) and printing extra money to give to investment firms, people who should have been diminished or wiped out in the tech bubble instead were still solvent, and they rolled their government-funded capital from one investment venue (tech) into another (housing and real estate). Not the tech businesses, mind you, but the investment firms and brokerages and banks - Goldman, Lehman, Merrill, Bear Stearns, BofA, Citi. So all of the "bad" money that should have been gone was instead sanctified and blessed and multiplied into real estate. Which is now busting. And withe very bailout, the bad actors simply have their sins absolved and move forward, instead of being knocked out of the market.

Of course, it will be only worse under Obama. You sow the wind and reap the whirlwind, but let's not pretend Bush didn't sow the wind. He didn't halt the recession from the tech collapse and 9/11. He delayed it. Monkeying with the recession now won't stop it; it will make the future much, much worse.
