| The New Cold War...Russia Cuts Off Gas Supplies To A Dozen European CountriesOne of Russia's main natural gas pipelines to Europe runs through Ukraine. Unfortunately, the Ukrainians haven't Slovakia’s Government followed Bulgaria by announcing that it may have to restart a mothballed Soviet-era nuclear power plant. The Balkan states, which rely almost completely on Russian gas and have failed to develop modern infra-structures or alternative energy sources, have been the hardest hit at the time of the Orthodox Christmas. In Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina, there were bitter memories of the Bosnian conflict from 1992-95, when the population cut down trees to try to stay warm or bought coal on the black market. Sven Alkalay, the Bosnian Foreign Minister, said: “Four million of our citizens are in danger.” Almir Becarevic, the manager of the state gas company, said: “If this lasts it could turn into a humanitarian disaster. We pray that someone can find a solution.” ...Yet 12 countries received no Russian gas at all yesterday: Austria, Bulgaria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Bosnia, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Turkey. France, Italy, Germany and Poland reported that their supplies from Russia were markedly down.So who could have foreseen the Russians using their control over energy supplies in this way? Oh, just a guy named Ronald Reagan in 1982. At that second link Accuweather meteorologist Joe Bastardi notes that the Russian actions may have been designed to coincide with the current drop in solar activity as predicted by Russian scientists. It's almost as if the Russians aren't nice guys, the Sun might have something to do with temperatures here on Earth and global cooling is a much greater danger than global warming ever was. And a President who promises to shackle us with expensive anti-global warming programs takes office in 13 days. What could go wrong? Just think:
Back when Stalin was running Russia the USSR there was a junk scientist named Trofim Lysenko that rejected Mendel's genetic theories in favor of hybridization. By having Stalin's ear he starved millions. It took the discovery of DNA to finally show that he was a crank. And here we are today, with seemingly the tables turned. God help us. OK Red States, aka the Balkans, decisions are being made that may have the chilliest of consequences. Fortunately Virginia came to its senses and became a Blue State for the first time in the last election, no thanks to me. Wyoming, you're in deep shit. Utah, dead man. Montana, dead. Niedermeyer, dead. Oh wait, Neidermeyer isn't a state, but you get my drift.

#10: and just to think that after kaine leaves town for his fanciful new gig licking obama's balls as DNC chair, we get to usher in a new era in carpertbagger-ness in mcauliffe. i guess it's time to start sending money into mcdonnell, huh? oh wait.....i've got no money to spare since my wife works for a bankrupt title insurance company thanks to the engineered collapse of the housing market by the Marxists. can't we just give everything north of fredericksburg to DC and keep the rest as the great (or former great...) commonwealth of vir-gin-yah?

Well I don't think it is strictly true that the Ukraine hasn't paid their bill. Russia is doing this on purpose to force the Ukraine to strike at them so they can retailiate and invade the Ukraine. Georgia this summer was a trial run. Hillbuzz had an excellent analysis of what's going on between Russia and the Ukraine. (Their January 1st post with Putin and the tiger. Though the later Care Bear one is informative as well.) Putin timed this to force the crisis to a head about the same time a certain savior of the free world will be inaguarated because the Ukraine should be running out of reserves oh along about 2 weeks from now. Europe is of course neatly caught in the conflict and will be whining to the Ukraine to give in to Russia soon if they aren't already. Why have I found myself singing "It's the end of the world as we know it" pretty much constantly lately? Posted by: ParanoidInSeattle at January 07, 2009 11:55 PM (AJ4xq) 19

Admiral, Not wishing to hijack this thread, if our current mental patient governor is ushered of to be DNC chair and the Punk is the new governor, it is a sign that it's time to move along and find another commonwealth. But I think McDonnell might not lose, necessarily, but the media blackout on him and all the rest of the GOP leaves us a daunting uphill climb. But jeez, does Kaine look like he just escaped from a mental institution, or what? Doesn't he get enough pay as governor to go somewhere other than QwickieKlipz for his haircuts? Oh and now he wants to promote early voting, aka FRAUD, in the quickly disappearing jewel of Virginia. Posted by: pistolero at January 08, 2009 12:12 AM (m9n7Y) 35

which will over time bring us to the next phase of economic recession/depression War. It happens like clock work. Civil unrest leads to dictators focusing the anger on the outsiders which lead to war. Hitler did it, Stalin did it, Hell the world powers in 1914 did it. (That said, I think we should try to help the ex-commie Eastern Europeans who actually seem to like us. It's the decadent-tastic Western Europeans that should Fuck Off and Die.) Hmmm. Watching the USSR and China over the past decade, you can see them positioning themselves for long-term dominance in energy and geopolitics. The good news is that Russia's playing this (huge) card a little early in the game. They've only begun to modernize their military, their economy isn't healthy yet, and they don't have their sphere of influence established in their region. Had they waited until those elements were in place, the natural gas games would have signalled their play for superpower status. The bad news is that the natural gas card is worth quite a bit, and is likely to help them establish their sphere of influence and undermine European support for our ABM deployment. The other bad news is that natural gas will continue to be a valuable geopolitical asset, though now Europe has been alerted to just how vulnerable they are. But I doubt that Europe will take any effective measures to reduce that vulnerability. Posted by: geoff at January 08, 2009 07:28 AM (ppbFp) 58
Posted by: Jim62sch at January 08, 2009 01:29 AM (6rQXk) The thought of Western Euroweenies freezing their nuts off warms the cockles of my heart. I was at the University of Buffalo during the big blizzards that shut the city down for 11 days in '77. Texans - my sister lived down there - printed bumper stickers saying, "Let the Bastards Freeze in the Dark". I think a campaign like that directed at the Euroweenies now would be a lot of fun. Remind them what Reagan said about the pipeline too. Germans should enjoy the schadenfraude (it took those bastards to make that word). Posted by: TomJW at January 08, 2009 07:30 AM (xRCpL) 59
